First off, DaVinci was trained as an apprentice by mother fucking Verrocchio when he was 14, but his earliest known drawing was made when he was 21. That huge gap, along with the fact that his earliest known painting was not only co-painted by Verrocchio but TOOK 3 YEARS TO COMPLETE (The Baptism of Christ) goes to show just how much effort went into his training.

Along with all of his failed, flawed, or downright stupid war machine ideas, DaVinci was not a genius that everyone thinks he is.

You need to study carefully they little details that make out a certain style and apply it to your own, not just copy everything.
Take a lot of work.

But ya the opacity seems to be good for shading. Sometimes I want to like tint the skin in warm light, but it just covers the rendering under it.

Also I keep painting on a new layer and then erasing the painted parts that fall outside the line work. The transparency lock is good, but like some anon said its hard to undo when you travel too deep.

Totally agree. I had several horse references but it was still really hard to nail. I also tried to go for a suction cup hooves look, but they ended up looking really flat. The directions of the legs is also unclear, which I think is one of the biggest problems.

Underlying gesture needs work. Good mood though. Thats a pretty traditional pose you should know it like the back of your hand.

As for the changing style's, just make things look like how you want them to look. if you cant visualize that, go out and find references for it. once you find what you like you can start warping things to look like that. find things you dont like, then do the opposite thing, just make things you can be proud of is the bottom line.

I decided to pratice my basics.

Stylization is another can of worms. It's unique to everyone in a sense like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, since your taste in stylization is acquired through consuming a lot of different works and gathering a lot of visual library. Ultimately only you yourself can determine what it is that appeals most to you.
Spend a lot of time just looking through and sketching what you find appealing for starters. With enough refinement, these 'bits' will show through your works.

White-out, erased pencil marks, and light blue are not picked up by older photocopiers. Not only is the scanning technology poor, the printing is pure b/w, so lighter shades are discarded. Most manga that are drawn by hand are reduced in size by photocopier, which also cleans up most stray marks and corrections.

Modern scanners are more sensitive and pick up even non-repro blue, and those can be easily removed by changing contrast and color channels.

You probably mean two different things: aliasing of b/w lines, or halftoning of greys.

Aliasing only if the image you are printing is very low-resolution. Ink is not a pixel. It spreads as it is absorbed by paper. A pure black and white image at 600 dpi will look decently smooth when printed by a decently spec'ed laser printer.

Halftoning is a function of b/w laser printers. B/W printing only uses black ink, so in order to replicate greyscale, a uniform screen is produced. The spacing of the screen depends on the setting of the laser printer and the resolution of the image.

They are made and scanned in B/W. The entire point of using manga screentones is to keep things in pure black and white, and control the spacing of screens, since older photocopiers did not have the ability to create half tones (and having a single half-tone, as a laser printer would produce, is not often desireable). Deleter screentones have very specific lpi settings, because all commercial manga are reduced by a specific percentage via photocopier and printed at specific resolutions. This is part of the reason Westerners who try to emulate the printed manga look never quite get it right.

As I mentioned before, ink is not a pixel. It is a drop of liquid. It is round. It spreads. Pixels are square, so if you have a high res image and zoom to 100 percent, you are essentially looking at the image magnified compared to how it would look printed. You would see the square pixels, the limitation of your monitor.

In order for a monitor to look like printed paper at 100%, it would need to have a ppi density equal to or exceeding that of the dpi of the print. B/W offset printing is between 600 to 2400 dpi By comparison, Apple's retina display is 220 ppi.
