Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1973278

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

You could lasso your layers, but I normally just draw everything in its respective layer for easy edits.
You can create a mask out of a selection, but not really recommended. Just paint it normally or use paint bucket with proper fill settings. MangaStudio5/CSP has a godtier fill tool.

Make several silhouettes, do more cane variations.
His head lacks form. I'm not good at stylizing a subject that I don't draw often, but hopefully this can give you an idea of how to add more volume to his skull.

Also your lines aren't good, it seems like you're rushing. Take it slow and carefully draw the idea you want to convey.

Have I fucked up already?
I just am not sure because i normally struggle for quite some time with each figure sketch but this time I just did it.

Also
How do I make a colored outline?
I often see good art with non-black lineart and it lookes good. when I tried to outline hair with dark blue and skin with brown it didn't look good.

Maybe i clip a color level over a lineart level?
Or do I Multiply/Burn the line into the colored image?

I've never actually tried silhouettes, although looking at this I can see how they would help, so I'll give them a shot.

I know what you mean with the head, but I'm trying to learn one thing at a time, and I have yet to get to the more complex planes of the head, I've just been using a sort of generic mannequin head. (Although I was aiming for a more comical look.)

Line quality is something I'm working on, although I do tend to not think about that much when I'm just roughing out ideas like this.

Anyway cheers for feedback, it's encouraging to know people are looking to help out.

>> No.1976873

>>1976859
This depends on the software you're using, but in CSP/MS5 you can set a reference layer.
If you set the lineart layer as reference, you use paint bucket on another layer and it will bounded by the reference. You can also set it to apply an extra fill to avoid that awful aliasing you get in say, ms paint.

Second, if you want hair that blends into the BG, use a watercolor. You can at a later stage merge all layers and further blend the hair into the BG. You have a million brush customization options for a reason. Experiment until you get the desired result.

Also, transparency lock is indeed a great feature for that, but you can equally use an additional layer, clip it, paint over it and then merge the layers. Transparency lock is faster, but it also means there's not turning back to changes you'd done to it if it goes beyond the undo range.

I shot myself in the foot because I'd been working on really small paper. This week I'm trying to do some more exaggerated poses so things aren't so blocky and stiff. Been looking at a lot of comics and watching a lot of cartoons to get a better idea on how to capture motion and make unnatural and disproportionate features work with weight and movement.

I'm in this awful mindset where I don't care what things look like, I'm just compelled to do tiny details and patterns and stippling and lines.

Practice a lot, there's not other way around it.
You're free to continue the drawing, but I'm afraid that might just lead you absolute frustration, and you don't want that.
A suggestion if you want to keep drawing it with the same idea:
Try going the cheap way for now. Change the angle a bit, more horizontal, and her position int he table, in such a way that you can cover her lower body. As if you're in the POV of a bartender. Throw in some stuff int he table like glasses and stuff and there you go.
You're of course not encouraged to hide lower bodies same way you aren't for feet and hands, but it's a good choice in this case.

Another anon here, I'm so confused right now about the proper way to use reference honestly. Wouldn't an artist get flaked on for using the 1st method? Didn't kr0npr1nz get flaked on by so many for copying photo reference?

>> No.1978850

>>1978793
The way I use a reference is I look for aspects of the photo I can use. A lot of the time all I need are the proportions of the body, or the perspective. You probably shouldn't be replicating the pose as your picture shows. It's bad form, and you don't really learn much from doing the same piece + fantasy pieces/a different background. You're basically just recreating the photo but with a new wallpaper. Use references when you're stuck on something, whether it be googling photos of what the sky looks like at a certain time of day in order to get a sense of which colours to use, or watching videos of people flexing to see how the muscles of the chest are affected by stretching the arms upwards, or doing observational sketches of people on buses/the subway to see how to make your character's posture look natural when seated. If you're not doing a dedicated photo study, your final product shouldn't resemble any one of the references you used. This also covers your ass from the people dogging kr0n, or potential legal issues

This is terrible. Like... really terrible. I'm sorry but it doesn't have any redeemable qualities. You should stop trying to make comics and learn even the most basics of basic.

The linework is bad. The anatomy is bad (does she have a tumor in her ass in the final panel?) The colors are flat and bland. The text is so cheesy it should have a rind.

In the white panel you obviously just mirrored her face but it was terrible to being with so now it's just a reflection of its own shortcomings.

And what the fuck is 'DEMON JUICE'? Is that like Satan's sperm?

im studying the hands of a master artist to get good

the only problem is, is that im not same facing like all the other pros

every pro artist in every medium of art, animation, comics, pro commision art, fucking either same face or there shit is very cookie cutter and similar to each other, even painters like drew struzan or frank frazetta

I legitimately can't tell where Bones ends and the trolls begin. He sort of eschewed his trip when everyone on /co/ just filtered him, and because he can't take a hint, he stuck around as an anon, pretty much indistinguishable from the people trying to further besmirch him (as if he didn't do a good enough job of that himself). Bones, if it really is you posting and not just someone taking the piss, stay off of 4chan. There are other sites where you could probably cultivate a respectable following of people with similar aspirations, talents and developmental disorders.

Next time I'll definitely do the line work BEFORE the rendering. It feels like it's impossible to trace the render afterwards.

You have an issue with the eyes. The iris is too wide, follow the references, even the redlines people did. You also need a reference for that hand (use a mirror and sketch your own hand), same goes for the other arm.
The shoulders could be a bit less wide, but I think the real problem is that the armpit is too high. The neck also needs to be thinner.
Give it a go.

just adopted a popular art style. other than the pose, (might look weird since the legs start at a certain position) I need to know what else to add to it. textures? color? better lineart? it feels empty, and I feel like this came out great by luck and circumstance, and I wont be able to repeat it with succession.

Also, I shade with blue gradients on a separate clipping layer and use overlay. is this the proper setup to shade and light? do I use "Luminosity" layers for light? thanks

Valentine's coming but I have no idea what to draw for my Waifu. as for other drawings I abandoned three half-colored pictures in one day and because they sucked but because I had no power left to finish them. Like I get disappointed in composition and idea before I finish polishing colors and simply Alt+F4 without saving.

I feel like I MUST draw whenever I have a shred of free time to get better so I could create something cool for my waifu when I get good, but when I grab th stylus some sort of stupor hits me.

hey slow down there. just take it day by day. stressing to improve only makes you feel worse that you're not improving fast enough and leads to getting mad at yourself for producing something below what you expected you "should" be able to by now, while you're unable to work in peace. make sure you set aside some time to just work on your art and not feel a pressure to do it whenever you have a ten minute break from something. but when you do have those small shreds of time, just make a little sketch of whatever you feel like, or something you see. see how far you've come. ponder on how far you'd like to go, reflect for a moment.

as for the valentines thing, if I may be so bold to suggest something, with the limited time you have left for valentines day, think small. maybe a cute little picture with something you both enjoy, drawn in a simple fashion, nothing too complicated, and a little text with how much you enjoy being with this wonderful person.
(if you're both into NGE, maybe two EVAs sitting beside eachother and watching the sunset(or [insertnumber] impact)? with some text like.

sorry if my creepyness levels are showing and for the wall of text, but I really hope you two have a good day together.

Check out Beginner Thread, there is many useful stuff.

You want to learn how to copy so you can use reference precisely, but thats it. For creative stuff go Loomis + Proko + Vilppu + Hampton.
You can find information on how to copy, academic way, in Vilppu manual, and he has one video. Yopu can also check "Charles Bargue And Jean Leon Gerome Drawing Course", but don't go all book, just do fea plates with the method in book.

helpful video, you can use to study your favourite artist, not only old master:
