Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1959953

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

The best way to describe semen, since its on my hand and fingers every two days is that it feels like less saturated syrup. Not enough to feel sticky like maple syrup, but not dripping like saliva.
Its somewhere in that medium.

that's a pretty common misconception around here. gestures are only a means to an end, there's no such thing as "looking like a gesture drawing". people who try to copy the style of the gestures of whatever flavor of the month artist /ic/ likes totally miss the point.

if you draw a gesture drawing and it helps you to build a good looking figure, then it's correct! people used to do gestures with shammies for crying out loud. it's just a technique for starting figure drawings so that they don't come out stiff.

The figures I was drawing earlier were horrendously stiff compared to these so I do feel these are probably a step in the right direction, albeit not perfect yet. That said, I think I'll continue on through Hampton's book to see if I can start building good looking figures with what I've got. Thanks!

Just wanted to show you that volume is something that is nice as well.
Also round your faces out a bit more, I see what you where trying to do but the depression for the eye sockets should be a bit more subtle rather than a concave depression immediately where the eyes are.

As for the buff girl, anatomy is pretty odd in places. Neck is a bit too thin and far back, hips are pretty improbable looking, and the butt crease or whatever that is on her left leg is just impossible. Your rendering is good but you should work on forms a bit more for imagination stuff like this.

everything i knew about drawing lines has to be relearned - drawing digital is like drawing on a block of ice.

Copied a Jake Parker megaman. Learned a couple things
>soft brush is better for making "gradients"
>erasing excess lines is a bitch - not the way to do linework... or is it?
>i hate round brush - is there a brush that emulates the pocket brush pen?
>now rendering feels like a loop of "do and undo" I don't like it

we have a long way to go

>> No.1969492

>>1969488
Airbrushes are best for making gradients aside from the gradient tool itself.

Make your lineart on a separate layer from the sketch layer so you don't waste time cleaning it up as much.

Do and undo is what you're going to be doing all the time in digital art. It's better than having to grab an eraser each time and erase, fearing that you may smudge or rip your canvas or something. You'll get used to it. We all did.

I always recommend starting with SAI, then switching to Manga Studio 5/CSP.
SAI is pretty user friendly and light, so iy allows you to experiment and practice easily.
MS5/CSP is more complex and gives all sorts of tools for any situation and it's also the best for actual manga. Its tool customization is pretty awesome, and this is something you will be thankful for once you start getting experience.

What I found helps me is really mimicking and thinking about traditional tools. The default settings weren't working for me. So I looked for brushes. The brushes I got were better, they were fun, but I didn't need all of them! I just needed to adjust in brush pressure and size settings to get what I wanted.

Erasing - Something I personally overlooked, and helped me realize how important the brush settings were. "Should" be a soft round airbrush with some spacing and flow pressure. This allows you to get a hard erasing with some pressure applied. Really depends what you wanna do. You can also square off the brush if you need a tight corner. You can take off all pressure for a hard erase job.

Drawing/Sketching - You want feathered light lines, it's like using a pencil or a ballpoint pen, or a wet brush. Any shape size or texture you pick doesn't matter. Use a small brush size between 1-5 or however big your canvas is. Make sure to use flow and opacity pressure on sketching, play around with this, and make the tablet pressure "soft" so light pressure gives you a dark line, this prevents wrist strain.

Drafting/Inking/Brushing - Eliminate spacing! Inking is solid line art with no pressure or a tiny amount flow/opacity(play around with it in whatever program you use, just don't overdo it) and make sure you enable size pressure!

Architectural/Industrial Drafting - Eliminate sizing is your first priority. Unless you know what you're doing, Don't use sizing!

>>1969488
The lines are very sketchy with brush-like lines. It does look like felt-tip marker though. You should figure everything out first in a sketch. I think you'd benefit from using a drawing/sketching brush with light careful lines! You ejaculate your feathering here, then move to inking or painting. You can either trying to paint over it first, built up with nice shapes and good thought to forms. Or ink first with thought to line weights!

whatever your pc can handle. and your personal preference.

Professional jobs usually entail magazine illustration. I know I know, nobody buys magazines anymore. But consider a drawing challenge to draw in vertical unit formats or even 2 page spreads.

Album covers are still legit, bands that put their music online must submit a 1000x1000 image.

Book/Comic covers are still a business.

If you use photoshop. There is an icon with a paint bucket and a brush or two in it. Under tools it's brushes or brush settings? You basically want the one with brush options and sliders if you see jitteriness and pressure you're in the right place. Oh I hope you have a tablet!

>what is spacing?
It gives your brush an equidistant increment of spacing when you make a line statement, like skipping. your brush might look like this ... Or . . . You get the idea. I'm not exactly sure what it's for but Sam neilson uses this with an air brush and the eraser. What cool about it is that you can go soft and firm with the same brush. With an eraser it's like using a kneaded eraser and a plastic eraser in one.

>feathering
Tbh. I don't know it takes on a meaning within Photoshop and it's also a term we coined in art when someone draws too many lines to complete a drawing.
In that context I meant to say, since you feather a lot, using a soft light sketching brush with pressure enabled on flow and opacity, you can go willy nilly. It's very forgiving for sketching, the lines will be light, so the lines you meant to do will be darker. It'll come naturally. I've been drawing a long time, and if I don't know what I'm doing I get pretty sketchy myself, these kinds of sketching brushes are a godsend for me.

Good luck to you, I'm actually drawing a mega man myself, so thank you, you got me motivated again anon!

imo I think the composition works better if the "camera" is moved slightly downwards so it shows less grass and gives more depth to the sky

maybe use cool shadows? desaturated blue for lines+shadows and subtly add a bit of saturation on the base colors. I think that this is a good way to make those soft colors pop out a bit more.
but I could be wrong, and not the greatest example too. but just my 2 cents

raise the right shoulder and place it behind the neck. Try to make it clear that you drew a hand. Remember the bean! The bean is an exercise for form overlaps, which are apparent on when the torso twists, stretches and scrunches. Keep the shirt simple, it's a challenge so it's good you drew stripes, and they are helping to describe the form, but the heavy lines are distracting and offsetting everything in the image. Lighten them up or don't include them. There's also something uncanny about the clock on his necklace. Keep shapes simple! That could be described with an ellipse. It's not that you can't or shouldn't. Your goal is to make a readable image, based on your current skill set. You will get there!

May I ask why you don't like it? Art is subjective, but I can see areas where the artist is flourishing and I can appreciate these areas even if I disagree with the work. Basically everyone deserves a fair chance with their work if they're being legitimately serious about improvement.
