I've recently found that watching documentaries on another monitor or computer makes me more focused and productive. I think the reason is because it's me willingly putting a very particular distraction next to me. Instead of stopping my work and jumping onto some random site in search of a useless distraction, I just have to look over and watch like 5 seconds of the documentary. It's more of a seamless hiccup in my workflow than browsing the web.

Why documentaries? I guess it's just what works for me. Music takes too much of a background role to the point where it doesn't really do anything. Movies and a lot of TV shows are too narrative focused to jump in and out of. I suppose some other alternatives could be mindless day-time TV, game shows, or sports.

Anyway, I highly recommend giving yourself a controlled distraction. Seems to really be helping me.

Mmh, in that case your priority might be making art more fun (since you do it in your free time) by putting on some upbeat music, taking it 10 minutes at a time & focusing more on "hey, I made something" rather than "this ain't Ruan Jia quality!"

Dear Batman, I dont know who you think you are, but I don't feel like drawing as much as I feel like browsing 4chan and looking at rule 34 gifs of zhen ji. if that is more important than me completing my life's work, and also my passion project of over ten years, then I guess you're gonna have to slap me in the face with your bat-hand. Afterall I'm already one third of the way finished with my graphic novel; it will just complete itself someday and i'll be rich forever. Go ahead, batman, use your bat-logic against that one and tell me i'm not a lazy, delusional hack who is gonna be stuck at his shitty day job until i retire a shriveled-up shadow of the person i thought i could be growing up. go ahead and tell me what i already know and am capable of if not for the fact that i am a giant vagina-shaped faygoy with the will power of a slug and the randiness of an american male with internet access. Please batman, use your superior batness to kick my flabby, ice cream-filled ass over to that lightbox to make something that i'ld be thrilled to show others, despite my failings as an artist and my personal insecurities. Please batman, use your bat-light to show me the way to truth and happiness. Aman. Also, thanks OP for this post.

I procrastinate too much to be a fashion student. I have three blouses due tomorrow and I haven't started sewing at all. I hate doing this work tho, it's literally step by step pattern drafting from a textbook, no creative work at all...

>> No.1964115

Ok, i have a problem of breaking my habit of procrastinating.
I want to draw, but i just waste my time on youtube/4chan/other shit.
It's just such an unmotivating thought, that i have to draw tons to get noticable results. Even though i know, that i WILL get better and that comparing myself to others in a negative way is bullshit.
Every day i tell myself to draw more but then i throw my time away for nothing.

I'm sure i'm not the only one like this. So to the guys with the same problem: What did you do?

>> No.1964406

I've been doing really well lately. I drew for 118 hours in January and for the last few weeks I've been sticking to a steady schedule of early mornings. Today I had to do some physical work that interrupted my morning and left my arms so sore and weak that I can barely lift them. Can I take the day off and make up the lost time later this week?

>> No.1964497

>I've been doing really well lately. I drew for 118 hours in January and for the last few weeks I've been sticking to a steady schedule of early mornings

What the hell do you do? How do you keep yourself interested after drawing for a few hours? I drew about 65 hours last month, and your hours are almost double than mine. Do you have a schedule or some shit or do you just do something random everyday? Some days I find myself tired after an hour of drawing.

>> No.1964507

>>1964497

I've got a daily schedule that breaks down what I do into half hour or hour blocks. An hour of anatomy, an hour of gesture, an hour of perspective, etc. I do them in whatever order I want to.

I also find getting up early and getting right to work is important. If I procrastinate at all it sinks me. Since I work in 30-60 minute chunks I only have to aim to hit those marks rather than worry about filling six hours of time.

I give myself daily and weekly goals. Every week I add another half hour to each day, or two and a half hours to the weekly total. I try to work Monday-Friday and get weekends off but I usually slip on Friday and split the day between Friday and Saturday.

This week I'm working six and a half hour days and my monthly total should be around 145 hours. By the end of the month I should be working eight hour days and thats where I'll stay, unless I start stumbling. When I actually get good enough to start working on personal projects I'll add more hours. I want to get up to the Greg Capullo level of 12-16 hour days, 7 days a week.

>> No.1964543

>>1964507
Thank you for the tips, this was useful. I usually procastinate till evening then try to cram as much hours as I can till I get tired, starting early might change things for the better.

An extra question if you don't mind: when you mention hour of perspective, hour of anatomy, etc, do you already know what you're going to do, I mean, do you follow a book or a course of the thing you're going to study in that hour? For gesture I use ref sites so that's easy to pick up at any time and simply draw. Anatomy and perspective exercises seem like they'd be harder to find, but maybe I'm just over-thinking it?

Oh and good luck on your goals, seems you're on the right track.

>> No.1964621

>>1964543

For anatomy I do studies and take notes from Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy book. For perspective I usually build various forms (buildings, people, animals, objects, etc) and experiment with lighting, and I also experiment with the station point, cone of vision and horizon to get a better feel for deliberate distortion.
