The ground looks like a flat plane with a texture map slapped on.

Here's what you need to do. Identify what it is you're trying to draw, and what you're trying to convey. What's the story/scene? Is this a camp or a village? What time period is this? Who resides in these tents? Where are they now?

Once you have that ironed out, do some value thumbnails until you find a composition you like. Next, go out and find references for things. This includes the ground of the environment as mentioned before, but also the tents and anything else you place in there.

Where do you live? It doens't matter. Go out with your bike and a camera and make your own refference, develop your tastes in the landscape. The reason they're generic is because you always utilize the same formula. I.e focal point in midground receding 123 perspective.

You have landscapes near you that will be quite interesting for anyone outside of your area to watch and see. You can go outside and take pics then "juice up" the ideas you glean from these pictures in a fantasy manner. This will lead to much more original and fresh results.

That's better, in terms of flow. Still, think about where you want the eye to go. You wanna pave a road for it, so it stays interesting. It might be better if you move the dude off center some (to avoid having a focal point smack in the center). Maybe have one or two of the horses kind of snorting or whatever it is they do when they shake their head, maybe one kinda lifting its leg a little. Or hell, maybe one or two of the dudes are holding banners.

Just little things like that to kinda draw the eye.

Also, the top right is just kinda wasted space, I feel like. Put something up there like the an audience or a painting (can't tell if it's supposed to be a wall or just an open space).

Either way, do little things that stand out enough to draw the eye without looking out of place.

The biggest issues I see here are poor narrative and poor visual design.

Coming from someone who hasn't played dark souls, with these piece I'm confused about the setting, the characters, and what's happening altogether. An illustration should tell a story, even if it's a subtle one, or one that's open to interpretation. I can't tell who the protagonists or antagonists are, or if there's any such conflict. I can't tell if the 3 hyper detailed figures in the back are characters, or statues. I have no idea what the thing in the foreground on the left is supposed to look like. You can't really have a crop of something visually confusing without establishing it elsewhere. Whatever it is it looks like it's important because everyone is looking at it, but I can't discern what it might be, why it's there, why it's important, and what relationship it has with the other characters. The story should be clear to viewers without having to already know the source material intimately. The setting is weird too - whatever is happening, why is it happening in a stairwell? Isn't there a hall these people can be in?

Next is the visual design. You jumped into details WAY too early. You should have first ironed out the overall value structure, the composition, the perspective, the color palette, etc. You have a lot of details and colors that are hard on the eyes. You have too much reliance on black, and the black is too segregated. Instead of cohesive large shapes of dark, light, and everything inbetween, you have little patches of dark scattered throughout. There's nowhere for the eye to rest.

You have some structural issues, like the elongated bending helmets of the two dudes. You have some strange poses, like the gold guy who looks like he's sitting on an invisible chair.

>> No.1953750

>>1953737
>>1953749
(cont)
Your focal point is unclear, and this ties back into the narrative. I assume the gold guy is supposed to be the most important one, but the positions of the two clone guys makes them look like they're more important. You also have everyone looking at mystery figure, and something partially cropped and off canvas makes a terrible focal point.

You need to start from scratch - here's what you should do. Decide on what the story is you're trying to tell. Write it down if you have to. Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, and all that jazz. Be specific. Next, you need to explore thumbnails to figure out the best camera angle, poses, lighting, composition, and value structure. Make a dozen or more thumbs, and make them very different from each other (changing an arm or one figure's position doesn't count as a new thumbnail). Once you have one that works, make some color thumbnails to figure out your color palette. Make a dozen if you have to. Once you have one that works, you now have a blueprint to make your illustration. Gather references to help you, and paint away.

Use a bigger brush when doing the block in and progressively make it smaller, that way the white (in your case gray) of the canvas won't show and won't be a problem anymore.
Also check your values, everything is much brighter than it should be, especially the shadow on the face. Keep a black and white layer on top of your ref that you can enable to check the values whenever needed..

I'll start back to thumb-nailing this again__the narrative in summary was 4 characters, traversing down an flight of stairs collecting flower from bats ( the three figures near the window, the three in the back left and the one everyone is looking at) the collected flower s were placed on the shield

the idea was that the three that look like statues are supposed to symbolically younger kids hiding behind bushes, and the four bigger bats on the left hanging down were supposed to look like guardians of the stairs

crap, the focal point wasn't actually the mysterious figure but it was suppose to be these flowers it was holding, which bloom in the blue of the night. I removed them atm

The robed character was supposed to be the most important one and I made her vertically fill up the composition, the gold guy was actually supposed look like a student or an assistant

The mouth doesnt loo right. How to have stronger edges?

>> No.1953946

>>1953938
The values are all wrong on the mouth. Why is it so light inside the mouth? The top lip should be darker as it rolls in, then the inside of the mouth should be very dark. As for edges, paint with a more opaque brush or one with a different edge that isn't so harsh. The bits of jagged edges on each stroke and the places they overlap look messy.

I've been charged with doing several digital paintings for a thing. If I'm able to do it successfully, it could mean a lot for my career as an artist. I'm still learning though, I've only finished pretty much ONE full on digital painting before this, and I'm incredibly nervous about how well I can execute these pictures. How can I help keep myself from choking? I'm fucking scared, /ic/.

Plan everything out. This means thumbnails to figure out designs (if needed), composition, camera angle, poses, value grouping, lighting, color palette, etc.

Make like a dozen thumbs for your grayscale thumbs. Pick the best one and make a few color thumbs off of that. Then seek out references and make some preparatory sketches for anything that might be tricky. Then paint away.

Be sure to manage your time wisely. For each illustration you could spend around a fifth of the time doing all that planning stuff.

>> No.1954036

>>1954027
I guess I'll try to do some of that, I've never really worked that way before, and I have a really tight deadline on this. I've already turned in some thumbnails and because of the way they want the process to go, I can't really change the compositions much, but I will definitely do a color thumb for each of them. Thanks anon, I hope I can do this.

>> No.1954041

>>1954036
You definitely can. Do your color thumbs and look up any refs you might need - probably lighting refs at the very least. Spend a little bit of time finding useful refs, compile them all on one page and have that aside on your second monitor if you have one.

>> No.1954042

>>1954041
To add to this, if you get stuck look to what masters have done. Seriously, they've sold every problem you're going to run into so if you can find a similar work that helps (maybe a similar material, angle, shadow shape, color) then just go and steal the damn thing.

>> No.1954044

Yeah, I always forget the two cardinal rules of illustrating - reference saves lives, and I don't have to reinvent the wheel lol. I'm just nervous because there's sort of a lot riding on it, but I think this'll help me be more confident, and probably save time noodling colors trying to get stuff right.

>> No.1954051

>>1954044
but you can reinvent the wheel if you like. i mean remember it's only an analogy, you're not really building car parts, efficiency isn't the main thing.

plus, as a funny side note, some guy decided to make a car with square wheels, for fun, because it's so obviously stupid. and obviously they didn't work very well. but then he had an idea, try them off-road, in the mud. and in the mud square wheels actually worked very well indeed for a number of reasons.

so as much as you definitely can and are allowed to refer to other peoples stuff and the creative commons in general, remember that you're working in a creative field.

A lot of your foreground rocks could use some polish around the edges.

I really dislike the dude. His helmet is strange and I don't understand how he can see through it. His pose is also incredibly static and boring. The dragon is reeling back, looking at the viewer with nice limb asymmetry. The guy in comparison is in the most stiff, non-reactive/interactive pose ever.

If it takes you 3 hours to make a drawing look good, then sit down for 3 hours and draw. Your quick sketch will not look as good as the sketch of a master that has spent years working on his craft.

Be patient, grab some snacks, put on some music or random low noise in the background and just draw.

Overtime, as your skills improve, a drawing that originally took you 5 hours will probably take you 1 to complete. Speed is something that builds with experience and visual knowledge.

Meant to do just a quick redline, but somehow got carried away. The biggest issues you have with the drawing are proportions (eyes are far apart for example), and lack of clarity in what you're trying to convey. I assume you're going for a surprised, small gasp kinda look, but I'm not sure. There are also some structural problems, like the chin being a bit pointy and the size of the cranium being ambiguous under that helmet hair. You should definitely seek some refs that match the expression you want, or use your own face and a mirror if you have to. You can always tweak proportions and structure to match the gender and ethnicity you're going for.

What I meant is that edges on everything are extremely messy. There are couple of ways to fix that

a) use lasso selection to control your brush better
b) work on multiple layers (which you should be doing anyway) and erase out
c) be autistic retard and spend 10 hours fixing everything just by hand and brush
