Not really. You just have to be conscious of it and check the values in grayscale as often as necessary. Make it a habit just like flipping the canvas should be a habit, that way you won't suddenly figure out the values are off after having worked on it for a long period of time already. Either that, or work out the value structure beforehand in a thumbnail.

And you need mileage.

Scrap that idea.

Don't redraw her.
Draw simple shapes that make her up first. Be as correct and design-ey as you can.

Draw it again, perhaps ten more times.
Always keeping in mind some basic proportions like thighs being as long as calves and so on.

You'll be surprised how awesome your tenth iteration will look compared to your first few.

And it's great that you are actually redrawing and redoing it.

And when you're redrawing it.
Try to not break or squash the boxes.
Try to keep them as boxy as possible.

Not to mention it will also train your box drawing skills, and boxes are a fundamental particle in drawing.

Always curious to hear about the figure itself, since whenever I don't draw them to fill out the canvas, they tend to turn out shit.

You are just drawing box-men. Drawing exercises are pointless unless you understand the point of the exercises.

You draw boxes like this because it`s easier to see how perspective affects the angle of a box figure, but you aren`t drawing your boxes correctly. You are twisting and distorting them to make the figure look like a box-man.

Draw a simple box at as many different angles and sizes as possible so you can understand the basic geometry behind a mere box. Then construct a figure using only boxes and pay attention on the angle of each box in the figure, because understanding the angle of each box in the figure is the very point of the exercise.

It's good but it lacks punch as an illustration. It feels like a study of a fine art painting done by an illustrator.
For instance the hand kind of pops out because of value contrast and how central it is, but it's just there, doing nothing really, nor being impressively rendered. If you don't have a detailed face you got to have something else detailed to make up for it.
Also there's this kind odd empty white space which effectively cuts the dog out from the rest of the painting.

So I finally watched the Sycra "How to Choose Colors that Work" video and I loved it and it makes a lot of sense to me. However, I'm using CS2 which doesn't have the same color wheel functionality as the newer version he was using. I'd like to practice using the technique, I'm just wondering if anyone has some tips to help me wrap my head around applying it to using the color picker in old versions, where you can't draw direct lines to opposite colors and sort of compare them the same way?

>some of the lighting didn't make sense, I hope you can understand where i'm coming from here. I tried to improve it a bit for you

Yeah, I have access to newer versions but I'm a little wary of whether my comp can handle them - it hasn't been doing well lately, I'm probably going to have to get a new one or something soon. My mom has an extra copy of CS5 but I wanted to save it for a good comp, not one I may be replacing soon.
Though it just occurred to me while looking at my post that I could just use a color wheel like this, actually, couldn't I? If I pick any given local color, I can see where it falls on this wheel and then determine how limited its saturation should be, just using the square one he showed instead of the triangle one. At least I think that should work. If that's the case I feel simultaneously smart and really stupid lol.

Cool, I'm gonna try it out on painting some apples. The more I think about it, the more I think I see how to translate it. Even if my base color is some weird in between thing like brown or olive green or something, the color picker still shows what area of pure hue that falls under, so I can still use that to find how close the other hue range is and how saturated it needs to be. I hope this works. I guess it'll require a little more thinking but that's just as well since I completely suck at color. I'll post results.

Wow I must be the only person here who really likes this. I like that the wood grain pattern is graphic and whimsical, I like that it's blue and I love how the orange looks against it. The only thing I would change to make it look more finished is to have the orange light affecting other areas around it more. Like maybe the cheek and nose, not the whole thing but like half, and the shoulder, because it looks like it's a pretty strong light source. Also I think the composition's nice, but I'd maybe bump the pelvis forward a bit more & curve the back to keep the rhythm going. Really nice, though.

The setting is unclear, and that pentagram detracts so much from the previous version. There's telling a study then there's hitting people over the head with random symbolism. Give the viewer room to interpret the story their way - ambiguity is great in a painting.

Before there was suspense: was the man with the gun the good guy or the bad guy. Did you know what was behind that door. Did whoever was behind that door know he was coming? Now all of that is confused with this pentagram that detracts greatly IMO.

Couple small tips.

Flip your drawings, so mirror it in photoshop and make sure everything looks fairly symmetrical.

Pick a light source and add it to the scene, even if it's just a place holder dot and cast your light from that point and dont be afraid of sharp highlights. Your values seem to be very low contrast, try adding more light and dark areas in the appropriate spot. Having a definite light source will help you in adding more variation to your values.

i suggest this to a lot to people on /ic/, but try ruining your drawings. your concepts just aren't there and your ideas are barely legible. but you are just drawing random imagery so that's forgivable on some level.

This shouldn't be a finished piece. You are doing abstract drawing in imagery but not in technique or application of materials. Have some bravery. Put a big fat black line through the whole thing. You could cover parts of it with marker so what was left of the imagery is only partially legible.

If you aren't going to write out your ideas and make sure they are coherent, at least be interesting in your incoherence. For as random and surgically precise the images are of the tentacles and the tree this is still a very safe image. it isn't art yet.

Stop treating every drawing like its your last. Look through all of picasso's paintings start to finish and see how unfinished some are. stepping stones to better ideas. Your art should always come across as the middle chapter, not the ending. You got out of the beginning of your art story, but you are rushing to the finish line. Show some humility and let the viewer know you haven't painted your masterpiece and there is still more work to be done.

As for your picture, The darker parts of the apple needs to be more saturated since your light is currently working in desaturating favor.

I don't know If this helps but try looking at the apple in real life and see what colors it actually is right now. Knowing the apple is red tricks your mind into thinking you should use red color, when instead you might opt for a red that borders into violet territory.

It took me staring at a brick chimney at night to figure that out.

I have tried that a few times and I found out I agree with it a lot, everything looks to calculated and cold. And if you go out side and look at cars parked along a street, you notice very early that they do not magically align with each other, same goes for some trees.

But the point is that you can just jump to free handing perspective without understanding the basics. So my tip is to try drawing a street two point, and then you go fuck it and free hand it with perspective in mind then compare the results.

Depends how you want to animate them. If you just want their heads to move, yeah you can do that in Flash; anything more complicated will probably need After Effects.

In Flash, import the image and hit Ctrl+B (or command+B) to break it apart, i.e. be able to edit it. Lasso a crow's head, and cut and paste it on a new layer. Then you can tween it or animate it frame-by-frame or whatever you want. Also, each head has to be on a separate layer.

Anyone a good ref i could use for this? And maybe som advice on how to make it more connected to the viking era? It's for a high fantasy, goofy game, so realism isn't really important.

single biggest issue with this illustration?

overrendered parts? stiff pose? wonky hand anatomy? flat shield?

if you only had 2 hours to work on this... how would you spend that time most efficiently? because i'm noodling around and pushing pixels back and forth and not really going anywhere. i'm also so happy with it so far that i'm afraid of ruining it.

>flat shield?
yep thats what jumps into my eyes right away.
right arm looks "twisted", the elbow is too low i think (not sure tho).
The chainmail looks really wonky too, but other than that i really like this.

hm. thanks anon. you are right the hand and elbw angle are mutually exclusive... i believe. and the shield probably needs a terminator or something. those two are probably a good start...

Yes, it does, very much so. Like you pointed out, I wasn't thinking about the saturation right. In the video he started with a saturated color, so the colors he used to compliment it were desaturated, so that's what I was doing, but I didn't realize that starting with a desaturated color requires the opposite, and that probably should be obvious lol. I'll look at some more pics of apples and try to apply this advice. Thanks so much for taking time out to crit me, and I hope I'll be able to find & follow you, hehe.

I only used a chalk brush and soft eraser though. How about telling me what I did wrong so I can fix it?

Buddy, I love the critique of my critique, but I'm sure everyone else who posted something they made would rather have your attention.

kind of hard to explain that, but i use the basic round brush with transfer and shape dynamics. At first i put down big, thick lines to get the idea and general figure down, put that layer on around 30% opacity, and then refine with quick strokes and scribbling. Wrist and elbow movements mainly. And i try to think impressionistically, to stay away from a clean, boring drawing. Hope that helps.

I would look up some viking lore, I'm sure you could fine a monster or something that you can steal some similarities from.

If I wanted to do some digital painting studies in photoshop, portraits/busts from photos, in color, how long is a good amount of time to spend on each study, if I'm intermediate at drawing from photos and low level intermediate or possibly beginner at digital painting? It took me 40-60 minutes to draw these from photos in pencil.
