Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1943992

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Better, but the collar bone looks too low down and you have rendered it as if it's creating a sharp crease in the skin. Collarbones don't create sharp 90 degree edges on the skin, soften the edge.

Went to /fa/ today to practice clothes and drapery. Got kinda sidetracked...
> 1 wanted to do clothes but was having problems with faces - changed course and decided to do faces today
> 2 messed up on some eye placement but the hair lacked volume - changed course and decided to render some hair
> 3 had problems rendering the face - changed course and decided to practice rendering today
> 4 the hair looked good before I blacked out the BG but then I noticed some hand and anatomy issues, but I ran out of steam to continue practicing...

I have long face issues cause I draw on a flat (not angled surface) I keep forgetting to undo the perspective transform...

Also bad eye scaling and placement are plaguing me.

Overall, /fa/ is pretty good for refs - would go back

>Why does a monster need to have perfect human anatomy
thing is a monster doesn't need to have perfect human anatomy.
However, in this case, it's half, half of it is a monster, but the other half is human, thus that half needs to follow human anatomy.

sounds more like youre worried about having to learn something new than any point youre trying to make. Youre right, it doesnt need perfect anatomy, but that doesnt mean its going to look good. Any good character designer in the industry has a very solid grip on anatomy. If they were to draw a monster with say 8 arms, then they most likely would place them somewhere anatomically plausible. no point having 8 arms if your guy can only use 3 of them because the rest get in the way. Pic related: a monster i drew (it doesnt need good anatomy)

It's not about having "human anatomy," it's about function. All monsters you've ever found cool in movies and shit was because they all have bases on real, functional designs. Something can't be a badly drawn mess just because it is "made up." It shows when you don't understand what you are doing, and making excuses is only going to gimp your growth.

I drew just the dude first then i gave the old bullshit factor to the background. No planning just "man, he needs something back there...ok" I wish I had actually done some sort of sketching rather than just goin in.
I almost never put anything behind characters because i'm awful and lazy so this is really, REALLY uncharted territory for me. I have no idea what I'm fucking doing.

My eyes always look derpy. They look alright until I mirror them. I just can't seem to grasp what they should look like when turned at angles, like where their corners should be and where the iris or pupil would be in relation to the other one if the character is looking off somewhere to the side. I don't have any style of eye that I draw, so I just wing it with different styles. Maybe that's why I can't figure anything out. Maybe I'm treating them like they are flat. I don't know, but I wish I did.

You know, I always thought this was bullshit. When martial artists and monks/prayermen hold their hands at almost right angles, I mean. I cannot remotely get my hand anywhere near that angle without extreme discomfort and I can only achieve that angle forcibly by using my other hand, and so I thought it was an embellishment that artists took. Train yourself to think in 3D. Good stylization originates from being able to represent form using simple values and contours.

Beginners often find it difficult to draw a pretty face, not because their proportions or style are necessarily bad, it's because they don't understand what constitutes attractive features on a face. Again, the best approach to this problem is to study real faces and expression. Understand what combination of features make them appeal to you (nose length, eye shape, eyebrows height and shape, jaw and cheek structure). Watch out for these small things when you construct a face and apply your practice.

Your proportions are rather inaccurate.
You made the top half longer and larger than the bottom half. This also applies to the head, which is larger in your drawings.

One way to fix this is to familiarize measuring the landmarks (shoulder width, waist tilt, crotch, knee, etc.) in your head first or use a pencil to dot the landmarks before you construct.

Tracing isn't inherently bad for study, It's a real good ray of comprehending forms of an object or if you want to practice something like rendering: at the very least you know for a fact it looks wrong because you rendered wrong not because you drew the object a little wrong.

For studies and practice it's best to break it down for one thing, unless you're practicing creating a fully polished piece from scratch.

If you're just tracing without a goal in mind then it's just silly. No different than just copying a photo in my book.

Anyone who tells you "WORK LOOKS SMOOTHER AT BIGGER DPI DUR HUR" is a fucking idiot"

If you're using pixels, dpi doesn't mater, stick with 72.

Also, that's pretty big. You should be able to see your whole canvas either at 100%, 50% or 25% (any other percentage your work will looked jacked up and wonky)

800x600 or 1600x1200 is good for sketching. Anything more than that is a bit much. You dont want to deal with brush lag so early in the game, so you need to keep gesture. Have a small canvas, then when you want to add more detail, make it bigger. (do your final image stretch before you lineart and make sure you're working at 2x or 4x the size you want the finished piece to be.

Just keep each color on a different layer and paint in the shadows/light for each thing. Paint over with base color then lock transparency and with a soft brush paint in the shadows/light.

As for selecting the shadow/light color just pick your base color and go from there. This is what I normally do for shadows. For light I do the opposite and go diagonally to the left and shift the hue up instead of down.

The rule of thumb is to work at twice the dimensions/4 times the size of how large you want the final to be. Not only do images look better once you resize, it's also beneficial to have the larger, un-resampled original if you ever need to prove authorship.

Equally important as file dimensions is to know when you should zoom in or zoom out when working. If you'd like to do inking but have shaky hands, you can get better results working at zoomed-in. Basically, when the amount of shaking in your hand is smaller than a pixel, it doesn't register.

Hands are way too small. Should be the size to cover face from chin to hairline. Shape and stripes on hat make head look weirdly shaped. Jawline on viewer's right seems to continue to infinity and beyond (fix angle pls). Neck is featureless and flat.I suspect you did not draw the body before adding hair + clothing.

>>1951286
Clavicles do not work that way. Should be horizontal when shoulders at rest pos. Look at photo refs to figure out how ears look and how much they show from this angle. Neckline on wifebeater is not typical for guy's wear.

Weird to see Rari without eyeshadow and the lashes, also not sure if vague porn veggie stare and slutty garb goes with her character. Other than that, shape of body seems to not have been built on sketch-underdrawing and so looks wobbly and lumpy. Arms are way too short -- elbows ho about as low as the waist/upper corner of the hip when held at sides relaxed.

Hair gas a good idea but needs lots of work -- shape of part implies malformed skull (should follow curve of skull), pouf/raise and ringlets need referencing. Why draw earring if it's nearly invisible? Be way more bold when building shadows.

Interesting. Then how did those artists go about drawing like that, and the artists before them?

Wondering if there's more insight on how this style became a thing and would like to learn how to go about it so I can apply such techniques in my work to look more natural.

What exactly is considered furry and what isn't?
I feel like anything anthropomorphic is considered furry by default, no?

>supposed to be a delicate loli.
She's also supposedly capable of slicing a man in half effortlessly,
I really like when people draw the 2hus in such a way that reflects their true power and nature.
