These actually look pretty cool but might I suggest simplifying your masses? It really has an awesome Yoji Shinkawa vibe going, but since nothing is really unified it's kind of hard and unpleasant on the eyes. I'll do a short paintover if you'd like to see what I mean, but looking at any of Yoji's work should work.

Also forgot to say, don't forget your focal points dude. Emphasize the stuff you really want people to look at. Artorias's mask should be a solid point, and some things on his armor. Nightmares arm and sword (and the eye) as well. The sword looks great for that reason. Try for contrast through value, shape and more/less detail. I mean granted you're probably better than I am so I may not be giving the best advice - but it just looks a little messy. I'm gonna try out an exercise that's similar now though that you've inspired me.

Far (shadow) eye is more emphasized than the close one. More contrast/colors going on, but the rest of the area around it is less detailed. Bring that up to the detail level, or darken it so the other eye takes the lead. As it is my eye is kind of like
>That one really clear eye
>Nose is blurry
>The other eye keeps me there with the color contrast change but that section is blurry so its kind of unpleasant.
Also lead down to the lips somehow, that looks great.

>> No.1945724

I wish I had gotten into these threads and started learning how to color and render sooner. Now I fortunately have a really good commission that unfortunately requires me to do a really good job of it and I've had hardly any practice.
Anyone have any good tips for coloring for print? Should I just color in cmyk mode or just rely on the gamma (?) warning? I have an old version of PS, I'm not sure if its warning system is still valid.

Shame you are studying this in greyscale since the use of colour in the image is one of the most striking components of it. Also be careful in how you define things--for example your hood looks blotchy whereas the original is created such that it describes a material texture.

Welcome bud.

>>1945740
I agree with this >>1945740, a big component of it was Mullins' use of color (especially complementary ones). Surely it looks good and accurate, but depending on what you're looking for you may want to try to work closer to how Mullins went about creating it. For one, he probably refined everything at an equal level and then only continued at the end where the polish work need be - Ezio's armor and clothing.

Have your own fun with it too, there's no point in recreating a perfect copy. Mullins did that already.
Don't forget to watch his use of varied detail to create focal points as well (I find that when people start with sketches of outlines on stuff like this they miss that point often when they render). Draw and imply your own people down there with a few simple brushstrokes like he did. Change a building in the background to be a spire or something.

About a week, maybe a bit more. I'd basically look for blender tutorials with a lot of views that were geared towards beginners. They're usually a how to make 'x'. The better ones mention keyboard shortcuts and commands, and why they have to do them. IIRC there were a few good ones by blendercookie. Specific problems could be solved by googling, as there are apparently tons of forum archives out there.

The figure I made right after learning most of the basics. Since it's planar, it's made only with meshes instead of incorporating the sculpting tools built in. Most parts are made by adding a base form (cube, sphere, cylinder) then moving around vertices and adding new vertices until it's close to the shape you want.

You can then set up a rig so that you can easily pose the figure. Most figure rigging tutorials will show you how to rig things in a way that deforms the forms as it moves. To keep forms stiff and rigid like a mannequin I looked up machine rigging tutorials.

For the specific reference I made, that part only took a few minutes. I just posed the armature, added cylinders to make the tree, and added a light source and planes to reflect the light.

I'm assuming you keep your ref on your canvas for easier vertical measurements. I'd try to steer away from that and place the ref on a separate monitor if you have one, or in it's own window that's a different size from your canvas. I feel like right now you might be going into autopilot with your vertical measurements, but you're neglecting your horizontal measurements. A lot of widths are either too wide or too narrow, and this messes with your overall proportions.

I'm also not a fan of your brush usage. You have a lot of coarse textures in the skin that read like stone. A lot of your edges are either too crisp, or too choppy from that coarse brush. Be sure you take the time to correct those, whether it's with a smart gaussian blur with masking, or using the smudge tool, or painting it in with a soft-edged, low opacity/flow brush.

>> No.1945866

>>1945856
Oh yeah, that definitely seems more useful and thorough. To make the sort of refs that I am, you don't need to venture into too much depth. If you want to make something industry-grade I imagine it would take quite a bit of time to learn everything you need to know.

Shadows are darker on the ref. Pay more attention to the edges, flip your canvas often.
What is intriguing though is the transition between the flat line drawing with blurry hair on your first image and the much more confident value drawing on your second image.

I went back and did a paintover to try and channel my inner Yoji. Man his work is nuts. I wish I had more time to work on this because it looks like crap in some spots, but I got a LOT of notes on how he gets his signature style. I'll share them in anyone is interested. Couple things though that anyone in passing might like:

>Example A - If you need to darken the value of something but only work on 1 layer, and don't want to erase/redo anything, put a layer above it with the darkness you want and set that to multiply.
>B - The brushes that worked best were chalky and oil-pastel types with absolutely no change in opacity. There's almost never gradients in his linework, everything has to maintain that clean, "inky" feeling.
>C - It's really easy to get the silhouette you want (and especially that lost/found line he loves to use) if you make it the object all black first and just erase out and then add small value changes later.
Most important things I noticed
>His shape design is incredible and completely lines up with his linework
>In everything he does he unifies the canvas with the picture itself to get that feeling. So lost and found lines and using the canvas' value itself become a part of it

Try setting the lineart layer to multiply and lowering it's opacity quite a lot. Since you already have the layer underneath the lines done, you now create a new layer on top of the lines and start painting opaquely. Try to think more in terms of a painter, and less like you're coloring a drawing from a coloring book, if your goal is to get rid of lines. Define forms with planes and value.

Brush strokes are very splotchy, especially around the edges of all of your shapes. I'd try practice painting with just a basic round and no texture. Use brushes larger than you think you need, and focus on defining planes.

Your values also need some work, as there's too much white and flatness to the face, but that might be mostly from using a ref with poor lighting.

I flip the canvas about every 30 minutes. Up until this one, my other ones started straight with values. I kept misplacing the facial features and as I worked they would slowly shift to where they were supposed to be. cmyk color space is that which is reproducable by a printer. You'd need to change the color mode from RGB to CMYK to check on what the colors will end up looking like.

That's one part of the puzzle. The other is that different monitors and printers are calibrated differently. For professional print shops, they should have their own color profile where you could apply it to a properly calibrated monitor and get a good idea of what the printer will produce.

I can't provide any more information than that.

Well, at least you replied, which I appreciate. Unfortunately this is for someone so I won't be able to go double check at the printer they'll be using, but I'll see what I can do. I have a friend who's worked for them before and says the printer is very good and he was able to color in rgb, which I heard is better for keeping the colors lively, so I guess I'll just use the gammut warning and maybe do a test print myself before sending the final. I have that suspicion as well. On a separate layer, draw out the whole head underneath the helmet, and draw the rest of the nude body/skeleton, focusing on base forms and whether something is coming towards or receding from the viewer. That's the easiest way to check. You could also try the pose in a mirror or take a photo of it to get a gist of the proportions and positioning you need.

Your study is lacking in some parts; wrong proportion as well as lack of value range, resulting in less depth. Protrude (nose, cheekbones) and sink (eye sockets) more.

That way you can focus more on the structure instead.

I only told him that i think his decision to put those ladderpieces on a horizontally aligned object is stupid and that a handrail would (in my opinion) make much more sense. (on an oilrig you wouldn't find any ladderpieces like that anyways, i don't know what let's you make that assumption, but you can show me pictures to back up your statement of course)

That is called feedback. If he changes it or not is up to him and i don't give a single fuck if he does.

I think blood themed things are cool to design. I would personally suggest to use a red motif throughout the design of the character to accentuate the theme of blood.

Draw the whole figure, instead of just a little portrait so you can really get in there and figure out who this blood magician is. Do a lot of sketches and try to resolve the design. You can always "pretty" it up later after you have come to a good design.

I think this image serves as a good template for a blood theme character. She's obviously not a magician, so just derive inspiration from it. The name is Skarlet from mortal kombat if you want to find more refs.

I remember you posting about how to get rid of lines. You're still relying on line too much, especially around the features of the face. You're too used to thinking about these areas in terms of drawn symbols instead of 3D forms with major planes. Your lighting is also flat and ambiguous, making your job of painting planes much more difficult than it needs to be.

I tried a paintover to address the planes and the lighting, but I don't know how helpful it actually is. Either way I spent time on it so I might as well post. Ideally you'd look for multiple refs to nail everything down correctly. Find a ref for the lighting - use your own face and a lamp if need be. And find refs to help you establish the likeness you're aiming for. I destroyed likeness in my attempt, but that's what refs will help with.

First painting piece I've ever actually finished. Sounds ridiculous but it's true. There's tons of lighting and anatomy issues but... Those are easy to work on. For the longest time my biggest obstacle was FINISHING things. I feel like I'm starting to get over that, which is a big step for me. I sat my ass down and didn't let myself go to bed until I was done. Which forced me to accept some things were beyond repair and I just had to work with it, rather than giving up, or telling myself I'd 'fix it later'. It's a weird feeling.

Not really looking for feedback on the piece so much as, if you have the time, what 3 things should I focus on most for my next set of studies, judging by it? And how do you guys deal with what I'm talking about above? Do you just put a deadline on yourself?

Right now I'm thinking some heavy portraiture and fabric/fold studies. Maybe some hands?

If you don't know the structure of the head and it's subparts well enough, then gather refs to use. Think through the perspective of the head and keeping everything consistent, as you have parts that lean heavily towards a profile view and parts the lean towards a front view. An almost profile view can work well, but you might need to shoot some refs of your own head under the right lighting to figure things out.

Tried a paintover to correct a few things. The important stuff is what's shown in the middle step. I'd advise developing some sort of system for reliably constructing the head - especially when you're drawing without a model. I also drew a skull beside it to show how the construction I use is mostly based on the skull, the only different being the added sphere for the eyeball, the added nose and mouth. Also note how the mouthline can often be placed by following the bottom edge of the cheekbone. Read through your Vilppu, Hampton, Bridgman, Loomis, etc to find what ways of constructing the head work best for you.

>> No.1948097

Try painting a few still lifes of simple forms like eggs or vases - preferably things with a consistent local color. Using a lamp as a single light source, pay attention to the value difference between the light half and the shadow half of the object. There's usually a range of values that can end up looking believable. As long as as the shape of the light mass vs the shape of the shadow mass is correct, it will look good. The values contained within each mass is easy to adjust if the contrast is too high or too low.

1) Structure of the head
2) Structure of the hands
3) Painting a scene. Though it's hard to judge here, I think you could use the practice of integrating an object into it's environment. A lot of your outlines - though interesting - are flattening your overall image. To that extent I guess also pay attention to your edge control.

The chin is too far forward. The direction of the lighting is distorted by the reflected light on her cheek. Maybe take an artistic license and edit that out until your art work is ready for the final layer. Good work on the lighting on the shirt and arms, but you could have done more with the folds and such in the shirt.

I am working on a larger painting. 6 feet x 5 feet. I am trying to get the composition right The theme is "The artist and the model". Instead of having a bunch of smaller compositions on the 1 large canvas, I decided to scale the main characters up, and this is one.

This is the composition. I will have about 1 foot of canvas above the artists head to work with. I have more detail drawings of the individual components. Just trying to tie it all together. What do others do when it is time to nail the composition?
