1936106 No.1936106 [Reply] [Original]

Is it possible for someone who works full time (and that job doesn't have to do anything with drawing or painting) to learn to draw and paint and one day become professional illustrator?

Fortunately my job doesn't exhaust me (it's not physical nor mental hard), but it take you 8h of a day.

i'm OP of this thread >>1932830
just so you see where i am at the moment.

Pic. related - quick coloring of one of those sketches.

Thanks in advance for all replies!

I wanna say yes. But I just got brain diabetes(epilepsy.) If I don't get 7+ hours of sleep a night I'm going to get brain damage.

How do you get that? Is it genetic? Or something you can develop?

>learn to draw and paint
You can do this with a full time job. Becoming a professional, I am not so sure. But if people can work full time and launch a startup, I assume you can launch an art career too, you just need the skills first.

Well epilepsy is a real thing. I just thought it was cute to parallel diabetes to it. Mine is related to sleep deprivation. But I might also have shit brain genetics, who knows. So it was developed. Much like people can develop type-2 diabetes from being out of shape.

Truthfully I wasn't getting enough sleep. Or I was but I had been constantly sleeping at different times. I eventually got epilepsy. I notice every time I don't go to bed now. I have a seizure.

So I'm perfectly healthy and developed a brain disorder. If I don't get sleep then my brain starts glitching. It's like living in the tower of babylon for a few seconds.

The good news is that I learned sleeping is a part of learning. Sleep is important to the learning process. If you make time for sleep, you stay healthy and the body has a natural way of repairing itself. Much like type2 diabetes, if you stay off the sugar. Then your body repairs itself and you get healthy again.

Sleep has the bonus of helping you learn. It works in fitness and and education. I scratch my head I know artists pull the occasional allnighters and grind for hours. But even tehmeh said that shit is overkill. Like why is this guy scrubbing paint on livestream for 8 hours? huh? is he actually learning?

Cause jesus christ that rib cage

a lot of people have done it, OP. but it's gonna be grueling. if you go into it with realistic expectations and a determination to persist even if it takes you 10 years, and you're ready to sacrifice your social life and sleep and stay inside and draw while your friends move on with their lives without you, and you're ready to watch younger guys with more advantages than you get better than you faster because they have more time to spend, and you STILL don't get discouraged and stick with it... then you'll make it.

I saw it in /co/ actually, yes.

Check the other thread that OP linked here. Some annon asked him to draw it.
And if you look at other drawings he posted there, you can tell he intentionally (as a joke probably) did proportions and anatomy as he did

Sorry anon, sounds like you had to learn the hard way. Thanks for the PSA, I just decided to make more sleep a New Years resolution.

>Truthfully I wasn't getting enough sleep.
How much sleep was not enough? And how long had you been doing it? How old are you? I only ask because I have very irregular sleep habits. Kinda curious how much I need to dial it back...

>Sleep is important to the learning process
This is something I always hear, but it's hard to follow. In order of sacrifice for a hobby I choose sleep first, then food, work, and never hygiene. When I go to sleep I love being exhausted because I feel like I conquered the day. I wish we had 30 hour days.

Best of luck!

I believe as long as you can put 4 or so hours into art every day you can get gud in a few years and get work from it. It's all about the dedication and a little "fuck it, I'm gonna make it" attitude.

Yes you can, but you have to really want it and really work for it, wanting is not enough, draw every day, practice and read everyday, educate yourself, if you can get help or aid go and get it, no one cares if your mom paid for your food or you did, is not wrong to ask for help, just remember to help people when they need you too.
