Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1927389

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

ok, just joking.
biggest fuck up seems to be proportions, draw a line from her left elbow to her right neck/shoulder, everything devided by the line seems to be part of different base proportions. above line is way smaller than everything below, even with forshortening the elbow of the left arm, should be at least on the level were her boobs end. the elbow on the other side is basically right, but since both differ it looks odd. overall i seems you tend to draw bigger the father you move down.
Like the face tho, even when its probaly drawn in your comfort zone. ear should be a bit higher.

Everything is ok, but you need to work on your line smoothness. Do quick, long strokes, and don't be afraid to draw the same line several times until you get it right. If you're already doing that, you might just have to zoom in so it's smoother when you zoom back out.

So I'm pretty bad myself but I feel like I can help a little with the proportions.

I did this a little bit ago but couldn't upload, but here it is now.

I would recommend looking at the general proportion stuff, 8 head lengths for the body with certain head lengths having certain landmarks.

You can kind of see where I tried to draw the body under the clothes. Forgive my lines, I'm more of a traditional guy, not used to the tablet.

Keep in mind that many artists use reference forever and drawing from imagination is a whole other skill, but this is what i do.
I take a photograph and copy it while looking, then i try to recreate from imagination, compare them and see what i forgot, do it again, compare
and see what i forgot, do it again, etc don't forget in that process that you are not trying to learn that only pose, you are trying to learn the body
so that you can create it from imagination.

A symbol is a symbol. The figures in which you put on canvas are nothing but symbols - however if you posses the ability to describe these symbols in space you begin to fool the eye into an illusion that the symbol may exist in space. If you further describe the symbol by providing a pattern we see from life you begin to fool the mind into recognizing something in nature as nature plays a pattern game found in the proportion of plants and animals and people.

If you add even more information onto your symbol by providing it form and shape you begin to further fool your audience into believing this is real and you may keep providing this information depending on how much anatomy you know but that's not the most important part the one and single most important thing that will provide life to your symbol is a gesture, an attitude, a sense of movement and rhythm that will finally persuade the eye into actually believing this exists and is communicating with the world.

It means drawing what you think things look like, rather than what they actually look like. Lips don't actually look like this in real life, but it's such a common shorthand used in Valentine's Day cards and what-have-you that newer artists immediately go to it, not paying attention what they're actually seeing in the reference. Facial features have it especially bad when it comes to this kind of thing due to how often they're simplified.

>> No.1935905

>>1935877
Our brain naturally creates symbols of everything we encounter. When you think of a stop sign for example, you can imagine a red octagon with white lettering. We retain visual information like this in a bank, the purpose of which is to be able to adapt and survive. If you went to a stranger who was unlearned in art and tasked them with drawing a hand, they'd be able to give you the symbol right off the bat—that is, a mass with 5 digits attached to it. Retaining symbols is a good instinctive trait of our species.

How this relates to art however, is generally detrimental. As others have already noted, when someone is drawing symbols, they are taking their perception of an object without context or spacial relevance and inserting it. Our mind loves to insert symbolic imagery into our work, which subsequently impedes on our ability to see objectively without perceptual bias. Training yourself not to see symbols in your studies and to draw the actual subject is a practical skill which can benefit you in the long run. It builds your comprehension of imagery and allows you to utilize your knowledge gained from studying to the maximum potential.

This is not to say that symbol drawing is inherently bad however, as it has its own place in art. Stylization relies to an extent on symbol drawing, and retaining simplistic imagery of various objects can aid in developing it.

Try reading "creative illustration". Informal subdivision really helped me over that feeling, and whenever I start to feel that way I do a few sketches with that technique an I'm back to good. It's a bit hard to understand at first, but remember that informal subdivision is a completely creative thing, not cold and calculated. Every line is just a suggestion to help you get an interesting picture that will even surprise you.

"Drawn to life" is also a solid book to get over the creative block "I suck" mentality.

To aviod symbol drawing, you need to understand perspective in your forms. For example, if you draw eyes as just a black dot, and arms as noodles like 'Fin', then you wont actually understand how to draw eyeballs and arms work and resort to symbol comfort zone.

With inanimate objects like a coffee cup or a golf club, you can set up a still life with those items and practice drawing the whole composition. This will improve your observation and visual skill.
Are image references bad?
No.
But drawing from an image goes beyond drawing the image, you need to be able to see an object and manipulate it in your mind so it can be imagined at any angle. Approach it with basic things like a pencil or an eraser, or even your phone. Then work up to anatomy and so on.

keep working on your anatomy, the breasts are a little high, neck a little long and too angled forward, the part with the collar looks like its choking her out, the shoulders stoop a little too much, the placement of her right eye is a little high

I'm currently planning on doing a comic very anime style.
I already have the basic story sorta planned out.

This 2 pages are for a random fighting sequence between two characters from that story.
The blue hair girl (yes its a girl) It's the main character.

And yes, I know that the character models are very inconsistent. There is a reason for that, that reason being that I still don't have a model sheet for either character.
What you see is pretty much the first time I'm drawing them hence why the inconsistency.

I'm still developing the characters.
Also, yes, my linework is messy. Need to work on that too.

All of the individual elements are nice, your colouring is great, but the way you've put it together doesn't work. The problem is that she has the proportions of a midget. Give her nicer curves and she'll be attractive, i.e. taller, thinner waist, larger thighs/ass, etc.

Thanks, and yeah I drew that to try and see if I can do something similar to some artists I like. Specifically Katsuya Terada and Tatsuyuki Tanaka, and slew of other non-specific people and drawings. I would just every so often look at tabs of their and others work that were similar, to see how they went about it.

Basically, I'm a britbong weaboo who's been learning for a week and I want to adapt an anime artstyle that's not westernized despite being western myself. You tend to hear stories about people trying to draw anime and completely massacre'ing it. Not to mention all the "How to draw manga" books in my area are also the exact same. This made me starting to doubt myself on whether I can do it. I'll just go in with an iron resolve and won't stop aiming for getting that style and then mastering it.

>> No.1937903

>>1937891
People massacre it since the style in itself is deceptively simple and it really is however the deception comes from the notion that you do not require the knowledge of figure drawing or how to construct a face and blow off fundamentals with muh style.

As for the books they are nothing but a mere money grabbing scheme targeted at kids thinking they can master mango with one easy to follow book that implies it requires no effort or studying of fundamentals.

That is why people say to stop drawing Anime and work on fundamentals.

Oh, so I'm at least going on the right road. From reading /ic/ I've understood that you can't focus on one thing exactly. You can have a goal but by leaving your comfort zone (normally your goal), you start to learn additional things which you can implement into your work and towards your goal. By doing these extra things, it feels like you're going further from your goal. Taking 3 steps back, but for all we know. We could be moonwalking towards it. So, I should continue reading Loomis, and Bert Dobson in order to improve. Thank you for the motivation.

You should look at references when faced with such a problem.
The leg on the bottom in most cases is a supporting one, so it should go towards the ground.
An easy way to cross the legs is imagining her sitting with her legs next to each other and then just moving one of the legs on the top of the other (in orange on picture).

Also, she looks a little tense, maybe you should make her lean backwards a bit. You can watch a bit on balance and weight distribution here, I think it will help. Good luck!
