Drawing from imagination is not the same as using a reference, yes he copies very well however when it comes to using what you learn from studies it will test you in everything. You should know this, he drafted the face well without using a reference which is no surprise because that is all he studied from the begging he clearly needs to study figure drawing more rather than making pretty faces.

Yeah, you're right. If race means roots it's mostly certain that we were going to draw eropeans, natives, Asians or Africans, but none of them alone look like us.
