practicing skin

>> No.1926487

>>1926481
Needs more hue variation. Try to consider the temperature of your light source, and let that shift your lights. Think about the temperature of your ambient environment, and let that shift your shadows. On top of that note that skin is somewhat translucent. Regions with a lot of veins with be bluer, regions with a lot of arteries will be redder, and subsurface scattering effects can introduce warmer colors where it occurs.

Do a few self portraits using a mirror, or get a friend to pose for you if possible. Stick with a strong, single directional light source to keep things simple, and pay attention to where the color shifts and why.

Anyway, slight paintover on face, color and contrast adjustment + vignette. I like the vintage-y chilled vibe.
Clean the bg some more and it'll be a sweet illust.

>im shifting the hue to the yellows for the light source aswell as desaturating them
Why are you doing that? Skin is already in the orangish pink color family - a warm light would make it look more saturated, while a cool light would make it look less saturated. By making the skin less saturated under warm light, you're implying to the viewer that the local color is a lot cooler than what you'd normally see, almost corpse like.

>the light side should be the color of the light source gradating to the local color, but there wont be any desaturation then or am i missing something?
Desaturation depends on the the temperature of the light and the local color. If they are dissimilar, you'll get desaturation. If you're painting a blue ball under a cool light, you'd need a richer blue on your palette compared to a blue ball under a warm light.

Think of it this way: when mixing colors and you're trying to go from say a warm color (orange) to a cool color (blue), the fastest and most direct route to blending the two is through using gray as the intermediate. Any situation where opposing color temperatures are mixed should give you a gray that's close to one of the two starting colors in terms of hue.

This is of course to the best of my understanding. If you find a more reputable source that disagrees with what I stated, then by all means follow that instead.

Nah, pretty sure you're color blind.

You can always check your colors by just color picking and looking at the color picker square to see where the hue slider lands.

Dan Warren is red-green color blind and he just gets his artist friends to help check his work or does the color picker thing I mentioned.

Building off that notion, here's the color picker labeled just in case you've had any confusion.

Use the eyedropper tool on photos of objects you might be confused about. Be sure to use a 3x3 or 5x5 sample instead of just a point sample, as it's possible to pick a pixel that widely differs from the average color.

Take the study you did and your version, and color pick the same area on both to see where your hues shifted.

Colors are quite muddy. It could be a lot better if you worked on the saturations & temperatures.

It's hard to tell what the background is at this stage, but the general gesture is confusing in relation to the figures. It makes us seem like we're looking up towards the figures, but then they themselves are sort of head-on.

I think it would work a lot better if you redid the figures so that we're looking upwards towards them. Would make things much more dramatic. Any sort of perspective would make it better, since the figures have none.

The torch has a very low value, despite being an obvious source of light.

Overall - colors and perspective need work. I'd fix these things before you delve into it and render more than you already have.

You seem too focused on getting the "skin tone" and not enough focused on actually observing the girl. The highlights on her faces right side reflects yellow light. There shouldn't be any red in there yet you made it bright pink. The left cheek highlight is almost lime green in some parts. And the middle of the face is much more desaturated than you made it. Desaturation the middle makes it look like the light comes from behind her, which it doesn't in your painting. Always look at how the colors play off each other. Compare the green in the background to the highlights in her face. Look at how the middle of the face is almost gray compared to the background. Tldr; try to paint what you actually see, not how you think it *should* look like

For me it came gradually. When I started with model studies my main focus was getting the underlying drawing right. I didn't think too much about the colors. But the more I got comfortable with the underlying drawing, the more risks I dared to take when it came to colors. I limited my palette to white, yellow, red, blue and black, and started to look for color shifts in what I painted. Limiting your palette is really something I recommend. And looking for which parts are warm and which ones are cold. Try to forget that you know how a human looks, and try to paint the model the same way you'd paint something you've never seen in your life. Observation is key.

Also, I've only painted traditional, so I don't know if limiting your palette can apply to digital painting.

Nice, especially the lighting, but the forms of her mouth are a bit messed up. It's a bit too flat and is pointing towards us, where it should be more curved and facing slightly left like the rest of the face. Keep it up.

You've got to think of the figure in perspective. If you have the feet like that the rest of the figure has to follow it, use simple lines to judge things like the knees, hips and shoulders. It messed the shoulders and torso up so they're facing us more than the rest of the body.

It's so weird, understand how adding blues and yellows, and purples, and all that, in the human skin add dimension. However, I still have a hard time incorporating it in a natural manner when I attempt it. (Unless it's something basic, like... blue for shading, or to cool down the tone of the skin.)

>"As you became older the eye became a compound object with a pupil (a dot), the iris (a circle surrounding the dot), and the eyeball (a circle enclosing the smaller circle). These became your own personal "symbols" of what an eye looked like. In order to create likeness in a drawing of your family, you always drew the same faces but added long hair for Mom and Sister, and drew short hair for Dad. You may have even drawn Mom and Dad physically larger than you and Sister. These "symbols" that you drew over and over again got stored in your logical mind as what you would draw if asked to draw. Rather than draw what your visual mind ACTUALLY sees, your logical mind says "I see an eye - here's my symbol for an eye." and you draw the eye as you drew as a child.

>"Around sixth grade is when you decided that symbols just aren't gonna cut it anymore. You'd try and draw what you actually see, but your conditioned, logical mind, kicks in and overrides your creative impulse and spits out yet another symbol, or even better, a modified symbol that does somewhat resemble the object you want to draw.

If you don't like it draw it again brah, the cover is like a poster for your comic.

It looks like your going straight to Ink for these? I would suggest otherwise, pencil first, then clean up your pencils. When I'm going to ink something I clean up my pencils as much as possible and use a lead pencil.

Also look up some artist on DA that do comic book covers you'll be able to pick up on ways to ink certain things.

But pencil first for sure, some of your lines look scraggly as fuck, with the pencil your tracing your confident lines in a sense. Also, google "line weight" it will prove useful.

Oh this wasn't going to be strictly it. I am just playing around looking for how/where I want things. I just wanted to show the contrast between that one and the happy accident one which I felt came out really cool.

I use non-photo blue pencil when I am outlining and sketching. So it won't show up in these pictures. I also didn't use a lot of line weight for the same reason. It was just to sort of see where everything was.

My eventual goal will be to make it look more like 1950's sci fi poster art for each issue, since it's going to be all black and white and twilight zone-y in the comic. So the final cover will actually be done with paint. But as I play around with comic covers, I'll keep posting them.

The brush strokes themselves are very ugly and your shapes are wonky. Try using an opaque brush with a hard edge (it can have texture or it can be the basic round). If it's the basic round, make sure the brush tip spacing is low (2-5%). I personally like to turn off shape dynamics all together, and in transfer I turn on opacity control to pen pressure and flow control off (some do the opposite, and some keep shape dynamics on possible with the minimum brush size adjusted).

Simplify your value groups - i.e. focus on big flat value shapes and try not to have too much variance where it isn't needed to describe the form. Try not to scratch in thin lines like you would with a pencil, but instead block things in with the largest brush possible. Whatever you think is the largest brush you can use for an area, go larger than that - overlap your strokes if you need to in order to get your shapes correct.

Look up "Proko hair" on youtube. There should be one video that covers theory, and one that is a demo.

Also look up "Gurney Ribbon Technique" on google. You'll find a post in his blog that covers approaching hair.

The gist of it is you want to approach hair like a sculptor would - focusing on developing large masses of hair rather than individual strands. You can introduce some detail, but only where it's needed and nothing too fine (the brush strokes above and behind his ear in your image are way too fine). Thin brush strokes is a form of detail, and you generally shouldn't have all of your smallest strokes confined to the hair - it almost always looks out of place if there's too many of them.

In terms of painting technique you're doing fine. Just be sure to pay attention to edge variation especially along contours. Also, try to avoid indicating things with 'drawn' lines like around the eyelids. Use a larger brush and overlap your strokes to achieve thinner "lines".

I'd say the biggest issue is the drawing itself. Eyes look big and low, and mouth looks tiny. Be sure to better plot out your proportions, both in terms of measuring 2D landmarks and in terms of constructing 3D forms.

The proportions of the masses on your figure are all out of whack. Make sure that when drawing the masses of the body, you're keeping their size in the relationship to the other parts of the body proportionate. Also work on your lines. Don't draw out the masses as boxes or spheres but rather but rather imagine you're drawing over the masses. If you don't know where to put lines think of shadows, that's where lines will be darkest/thickest. If you're still clueless you should study linework of other artists. I'd also try drawing with pen, you can't erase which will help train you to make better lines.

You can call someone out, although that guy's way too general and overly aggressive statement about digital artists probably meant it was bait and not worth calling out, but why not use your own stuff? Sometimes you have to, if it's like "oh Western artists are all.." like some huge topic, but there are a lot of instances where it seems like the people involved would back it up with their own art but they don't, they post someone else's without even saying it's not theirs. I'm not him either, and like I said sometimes you wanna use someone else's art to make a point, what bugs me is just this general pattern of people posting in such a way and situation that you'd think it was their own work and it turns out not to be. Do people think their point won't be valid unless they post an "established" person's art? But doing that will make it obvious it's not the poster's art. So why don't they say whose it is? I just.. I dunno, I'm pretty new to this board so I guess I just don't get it.

Ignore the hair and ears, I'm just trying to get a realistic face

I think I messed up with the outlines, her face has a more, detailed outline of course, in the nose and between the eyes

The top lip I'd also too far from the nose

Any advice on getting better proportions? Or does it just take practice?

Stop focusing on definitive outlines. If you're going for realism, cartoony outlines won't get you there.

Instead, focus on spacing between facial features and the contrast between highlights and shadows.

You've already shaded her entire face which makes it look flat. Don't be afraid to use an eraser to bring out the highlights.

The original picture is relatively light, I agree, but when you translate it onto paper there must be some sort of contrast between shadows and highlights to give the face perspective.

I wouldn't start shading right away, try some rough cross-hatching to start. And no, not every darker colour needs shading. Take the hair for instance; if you shade it completely, it will be hard to bring out the fine, detailed hairs from it later on.

Recognize the darkest shadows on the face such as the nostrils and the shadow underneath her jawline. Since these are the darkest areas, they can give you a reference to how dark or how light your other shadows need to be.

Again, don't be scared to use an eraser to create highlights, it works wonders.

If you are stumped, take a few steps back and compare your drawing from there. It's easier to spot mistakes from a distance

The composition is very boring, I don't feel any kind of tension that I imagine you're trying to get across in a scene with two dudes confronting each other. Maybe there's something I don't get (I definitely don't get what that gold thing is next to the closer character) but they just kinda seem to be looking at each other. Farther guy is in a stance that looks like he's about to bring his sword down, but since they're so far away from each other it kinda just seems nonsensical.

I really like how you handled the sky though, going to take a few cues from you the next time I paint a landscape.

the curvature implies more movement and gesture (yes landscapes can have gesture too :) ) you have a diagonal thing going on so I changed the guy in front to flow with the cloud also so he looks more scared of the guy on the rock, although he is anticipating the strike and about to block.

Do twice as many in half the time. Be productive. Don't get stuck with details but focus on the picture as a whole. Face recognition isn't about good rendering, it's about the relative distances between the different parts of the face. Your main objective is to get the underlying drawing right: does this look like a face? Do I recognize this face? What differs this drawing from the original? Change the things that are different, then move on to the next.

Most importantly; draw because you want to explain what you're seeing, not because you want to make a pretty painting. You'll have plenty of time for that when you're confident with the basics. You can't make a working painting by rendering the shit out of a bad underlying drawing, but you can make a great painting with shit rendering and a good underlying drawing.

From what I can see, its really hard to tell whats going on aside from the people. The white makes the middle stand out so its really heard to tell whats closer or further away. I can't tell if they are on a cliff, or in a cave, or on some snowy hills.
