Is figure drawing from photos/videos(pic related) largely hindering compared to drawing models from life? I can't afford to go to a life drawing class near me cause moneys tight and since I'm a beginner I can't really make money off my art just yet. Will my skills be insufficient if I draw from videos/pictures?

Not at all. It's not as good, but it's still very useful.

I've heard from several classically trained artists that studying figures from photographs/videos isn't necessarily a hindrance to your development. As long as you study the structure and movement, instead of focusing on detail and rendering. Don't be a slave to your reference photo, just use to better understand the form. I often draw people from photo refs but make sure to do it an a loose way, and nobody can ever tell the difference between those and my life drawings.

so the goal isn't to copy the figure exactly, but to use the figure as a reference?

I wouldn't say just use as a reference. I think what really makes the difference is how you look at it. Study the human body, not copy. Don't get too stuck up in details, try to understand the form. The flow. The spaces. Gravity working on the fat and the muscles, movement. Anyway, everything you'd do in a real life class, but using photos. Shit, I guess I haven't been really helpful haha...

I am not sure if there's any set science to the learning of artistic skill. Nobody is really sure, it's why people just say "Keep drawing." Everyone figures it out on their own as long as you're serious about it.

Figuratively, yes.
But you should test yourself, despite it.

Drawing from photos instead of life is like masturbating vs having straight up sex.

Both get you off, sex simply has the higher ceiling for effect.

This, life drawing allows you to collect more data, but photos can get you adequate gains if you know how to approach them

Yes, if you apply yourself and use your brain to study well and not zone out and draw things in a stupid trance.

Mind you, that will give you progress as well, but thinking about it, analyzing what you draw yields better results faster.

you can improve just by making a drawing analize it, see what you did wrong and do it again better. do that for anything you draw and you will improve in a day or two by, for example, knowing where the skin folds here and there. and even if your hands do not follow, you still have the knowledge (if you're serious though) so just keep working, let alone a full week worth of work.

Photos are fine, just don't fall into the habit of straight copying the photos contour for contour. Being a human Xerox isn't much use unless your sole artistic goal is impressing Imgur with overworked copies of Bryan Cranston's face.

You want to 'build' your figure on the paper using the photo as a reference, mostly just paying attention to the spatial relationship between the various anatomical landmarks and what bits stretch, twist and bulge in that particular pose.

At least that's what I do.
