>how long should it take me or does it take in average to finish a character concept?

what kind of god awful question is that? how do you expect us to know how long it will take you.. not only is that extremely subjective, but you shouldn't be worrying about how long it takes "in average" for others to finish a character concept.

you should finish it when it looks adequate, and you have a lot of things to fix before it even reaches that point.
the tones and lighting is terrible, the pose is stiff and difficult to read, those legs are incredibly far apart and the arms look awkward as fuck. take a good look at what you are doing and strive to fix it, instead of plaguing our eyes with this shit.

>>1920784
oh my gosh, you are referencing a photo? draw yourself a nice little perspective grid over the photo of the car and try to learn through practice. what do you expect us to do, spoon feed you? hold your hand and walk you through the process? all you have to do is observe the nature of how three dimensional forms move in space. that's all it is.

the sword and the man in the foreground looks impressive, but that... girl? its pose makes little to no sense, especially at the hip & legs,,, the right leg is pivoted inwards too much in a way that isn't natural, and the left leg is the opposite. the neck doesn't attach to the head correctly, it looks broken. & that face..

study the human form more, and how it balance in poses of action.

It was my intention to "point" the legs towards the knight but in hindsight I see it did make her body incredibly awkward, I agree with the neck bit and faces are one of my more glaring weaknesses. thx m8

i'm not certain if one can develop good tastes & sense of design, or if it is something that some people have, and others just lack. .. you can learn just about anything though, right?

based off of that, i believe that it just depends on the maturation of a being. with time and experience, you observe and learn what appears to be "aesthetic", and what is the contrary. if i were you, i would spend a lot of time looking at artwork and photos, and visiting museums and galleries. since you're interested in concept art and such, subject yourself to quality movies and video games. hell, spend a lot of time looking at & scrutinizing everything. really analyze and churn around the thoughts in your mind of what makes good designs desirable.

looking at your piece, the overall composition, color palette, and design choices in the armor and skeleton are what really stick out to me.

No, it doesn't. You're giving absolutely shit advice, so I'm calling you out on it.
The momentum of doing pretty much anything action oriented shifts the balance and thus the pose of the person doing the action, so that photos like that are utterly useless. People who use shit like that end up with lifeless stills, that look like they're taking from some high school play.

You can always keep getting better on that grid/boxing technique that works great for drawing machinery and similar stuff, thought I personally find it a bit boring.

Alternatively, you can try a coup d'oeil (stroke of the eye) approach to sketching in general, by quickly shifting between watching your model and reproducing the general direction of the forms with your hand. You can then easily resize and ad all sorts of details to that first solid directional sketch.

I have a general question, and suppose this is a good place to ask.

Do you learn anatomy almost solely from doing studies? I suppose not, but how often do you need to try your hand at making things without a reference? I at least have no idea how to draw a body even slightly correctly from scratch.

Mano, you have skill but go back to the foundations. I like the way you've crafted the colour, but the form is needing the work, it's where you're going wrong.
Look at the shape. Scrap the colour, work in just one colour and work on getting the shapes right. His collar ends near his mustache on the right of the painting, not by the end of his shoulder. His neck on the left side of the painting also reaches the collar closer to his ear, where yours is a bit further away. Also, work more on those shadows, give it some more contrast to give it more depth.
Keep going, mano, you can do it.

Actually, apart from copying some Michelangelo stuff as a teen, I've never done proper anatomical studies (I mean, drawing bodies just for the sake of learning and not intended for a specific piece). However, I did learn anatomy -and physiology- in somewhat fair detail both in high school while aiming towards medicine (though going for pure maths in the end) and later as a (failed) classical dancer.

So yeah, there are many ways to get somewhat versed in anatomy. However, I didn't use references or used weirdly for many years, thus developing a crooked "style" that I latter hated and struggled to shake off of. I now always use references for everything (not just people), even if partial ones.

Different anon here.

The jaw is very narrow, the cheeks are rounded and pronounced, the lips are plush and shiny. Something is off with the eyes as well, but I can't put my finger on it.

Basically it looks like a girl in man makeup. If you're aiming for manly, use more straight lines than curves. Make shit angular as if it were chiseled out of wood. Accentuate traits that are airbrushed away in female models (cheek creases on the sides of the nose, rough skin and imperfections, wrinkles, etc). You could also give him a more aggressive, determined look in his eyes rather than the vacant stare you have now. Look into black and white photo portraits of famous men, and pay attention to the personality that's emphasized. Stay clear of male models.

No problem. I also decided to try a paintover to make him look more manly. It's not amazing but I do think it's an improvement. Some more notes that weren't in the original critique:

-Knocked down contrast on the iris+pupil and the eyelashes. Looked too much like eyeliner. I also got rid of the specular reflection in the eye to give him a more serious look. I tend to see that highlight emphasized in cutesy or feminine faces more so than masculine faces, but I could be wrong.

-Flattened the eyebrows that. Eyebrows with a high arch and a significant taper tend to look groomed and feminine. Thick, flat and a little natural messiness looks more rugged.

-Widened the chin a bit. The widening of the jaw was accomplished mostly by introducing some light there instead of having it being in shadow. With the direction of the light source it reads like a wider jaw without adjusting the contour much at all.

-Added more prominent adam's apple and neck musculature. I also tried to make the ear a little more angular instead of having that very curvy contour.

Your proportions are pretty spot on. You do need to pay closer attention to your values and colors. In particular, you shouldn't be afraid of venturing into the deep grays, and even grayed out colors that don't seem logical (gray purples, blues, or greens in skin). It helps the traditionally "fleshy" colors pop more.

Look for subtle hue changes, there are parts of the hair and the dress that could use blue glazes at the very least. Try to keep the temperature of your light source in mind, and push the shadows towards the opposite (warm light cool shadows, or vice versa). It's not a hard and fast rule, but it works a lot of the time unless there's very complex lighting in the surrounding environment.

Lastly, be more mindful of your edges. A lot of your contours are too uniform and crisp, while your interior shapes have too soft gradients for the most part. Try experimenting with brush settings to find something that gives you freer edge control through opacity. Try to zoom out for most of your painting, and don't get lost in getting crisp details or edges - those are secondary to establishing all of your big shapes correctly. You should aim to paint your ref as you see it though slight squinting instead of focusing on crisp detail work (works better when painting from life).

I found your ref and did a super quick and dirty paintover that hopefully conveys some of these points.

It's a Jaime Jones brush. It's the tall fat textured rectangle - the starting size was 93 in his brush pack. Pen pressure set to control only opacity, and starting flow and opacity at 100.

There might have also been a little bit of the smudge tool on low strength, a chalky brush tip, with angle jitter on max and some scattering. I use that to quickly soften some edges while keeping a bit of texture.

The base has issues with the fundamentals that won't really get fixed through polish. After establishing your gesture, try to construct the figure out of boxes and cylinders - include the ground plane and horizon. If you have difficulty with that, then read up on your perspective and practice drawing basic forms from different angles and lighting from life and imagination.

With the base construction of the figure in place, it becomes easier to determine which planes should be lit and which should be in shadow depending on where place your light source(s).

>The original background i made looks like crap
Consider doing a dozen or so small thumbnails taking both the figure and background into account. You can read up more on thumbnailing here:

>> No.1922771

>>1922767
Well with your initial picture you shading is pretty darn good but you don't consider how an object will cast a shadow beyond itself. Like how the top of the leg will prevent light reaching some of the bottom of the leg. It's like everything's correctly lit if taken independently. Really try to imagine where the light won't reach and just block that in as one shade.,

I got that chalky brush so many years ago that I forgot where it came from. Looking at my newer brush packs, it does match the tip shape of a Ruan Jia brush (angled skewed rectangle with heavy texture, size 50). You'd have to possibly increase the spacing, max out angle jitter, and add a small amount of scattering to get it close to what I'm using.

Any brush tip that has a lot of texture throughout and an uneven, jagged contour would do the job. Once you select it with the smudge tool, make the above adjustments and turn down the strength (I have mine on 22). I also have strength jitter control and size jitter control set to pen pressure so that it isn't always at full blast. When you get the settings right it will quickly and efficiently soften an edge while maintaining a bit of grit.

So last thread or so someone had said my work flow was too repetitive or something like that? So I tried something different on this sketch. I mean I tried something different on the Link one and that didn't work out anyway so I'm just messing around with things. If I could get feedback I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to work on color so that's probably something that needs a lot of help. And anything else. Thanks guys.

>> No.1922897

>>1922892
You seem to consistently make skin too saturated, uniform and orange. You need to introduce some hue and saturation variety. There are often a lot of subtle grays that help make skin pop given the right lighting conditions. For starters, try to think about the temperature of your light source - if it's warm make the lit areas warmer than the shadows, and if it's cool make the lit areas cooler than the shadows.

Your values also don't properly convey a light source direction or accurate forms - the forehead being the most obvious problem area.

My advice is to paint a few self portraits from a mirror. Keep the room dark except for a lamp pointed at your face at an angle. You just need more practice painting colors from life, but the experience will help you in many more ways than just color.
