Not that guy, but "better" rendering means the artist is better at accurately depicting how light interacts with form. The mario image has plenty of problems with that. There is no gradient, no fall-off, everything in the light is lit at 100% intensity. The shadows are dirty due to wrong color temperature etc. It's just not a good, 3dimensional rendering overall. The image that other guy posted clearly is more accurate in the way the light interacts with the forms and has a much better handling of the color temperature and edge control and there is a realistic fall-off where not everything in the light has the exact same exposure, which makes it a better rendering.

Also I get that the second pic probably ticks more of your rendering rules boxes with its atmospheric perspective and color temperatures and things. I think the atmospheric perspective is an overused trope. It should only happen in a foggy environment. Go outside on a clear day and you wont see any atmospheric perspective until at least a few miles. Overall it looks kitsch as fuck.

You really should brush up those studies if that's the case, because your image is anything but competent in those areas. There is no good sense of lighting (thus lack of form; everything looks pretty flat), it displays no distance between Peach and Mario/Yoshi despite one figure being closer to the viewer's eye, the colours are overall muddy and show no sense of colour theory (eg. Mario's hat suddenly having a dark blueish hue to it, the blue of the shadow in Peach's hair for no reason but for the sake of throwing random colours). Someone who can freehand a complex perspective scene the way KJG does is infinitely more proficient at perspective than someone who'd draw a perfect grid and plot out every vanishing point for every object just to not make any mistake whatsoever.
