Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1912631

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Here are some responses from last thread
>>1917575
>how you learned it
I did as this guy said >>1917767 - copied doujin panels. I think it is pretty fun. It's interesting to see where the face stretches as the eyes and mouth deform.

>>1917584
>How much did you spend on your set, and where did you find those super thin pens
i got them at dick blicks - they have a sakura pigma micron pack that has all the sizes it was like $12, but I really only use 01 and 005

>>1917588 >>1917610
This was never my goal...

>>1917673 >>1917727
> learn the ratios of the body
> heads are way too big
This discussion looks too hot to jump into - i was only drawing faces in the last post. I'll try to combine my learnings soon.

I don't mind the shit posting critique. There is always a little truth behind even a pure shitpost so its good to assimilate everybody's views even if you can never make everyone happy

>>1917677
>disgusting sidemouth
Ah next time i'll take more liberties in my copy and do the right mouth - I always forget

>>1917714 >>1917767 >>1917847
> all his drawings are copies
> just copied this doujin panels
Yuppers sorry to disappoint. I rarely do any OC. It drains a lot out of me and sometimes i just want to put pen on paper

>>1917783 >>1917785
I feel more comfortable jumping in straight with a pen while copying, but I can't do just pen if I don't have a ref. I still have to sketch it out first - preferably in pencil, then erasing the linework

>>1917760
>Maybe she can learn something from it
I lost track of the discussion here - I'm a dude, but I don't know if this was for me. Anyways, less chat and more draw!

newfag here, i'm kinda nervous about my lack of skill drawing.
so what do you say? need an advice
also, is it necessary to use tablet? i'm to poor to buy a tablet
so i always draw manual. only use pencil 2b and an eraser.
is it bad? are my skill gonna stuck? because one of my friends said "if you wanna improve your drawing skill, tablet is a necessary "

>> No.1918213

The perspective of the eyes/face looks a little wonky but I totally dig the way you did the clothing. A tablet isn't necessary at all and your friend is an idiot. If you want to do digital stuff then it's necessary but if you're fine with the more traditional stuff then I don't see why it's needed.

For me, if sketching, you should also put the line of the rib cage and/or the middle line from the neck to the rib cage up to the pelvic area. It's easier to render that way.
It's just me though.

Don't make your own thread, if people aren't interested in the generals then you're just taking up space by making your own. There's a lot of information there and it gives me a headache to look through it all, so try to distill the essence of what you're asking into one post with the images.
I'd say you really need to focus on feet, specifically feet within shoes. Try to draw different sorts of faces from refs too, to help combat any sameface issues.

I'm mostly looking for design critique and ideas.

So, it's kinda hard to put it all into something condenced...

If I do, people go in the wrong direction, so I try to explain WHY I made certain choices, or what I want with each character.

But then I get asked about the setting and such as well.

It's a lot of info, but honestly, that's as concise as I can make it. If I leave out more info, then people aren't really gonna get what I'm going for here...

>Don't make your own thread, if people aren't interested in the generals then you're just taking up space by making your own.
i don't agree with that, people can hide his thread if they don't care and there are a lot of useless threads anyway. if there is a thread related to art, it should be welcomed. it's easier to track someone's progress, to see if they take the advice, and might be motivating for some to keep working by posting art to keep their thread alive.

I think you made her upper torso look like a pop-can. remember there's an oblong ribcage in there. not to mention latissimus dorsi and teres major. It's not really visible on your ref because of her large breasts, but the torso should flare out a bit near the top.

Also, what's with that flab at the top of her left leg on the inside? look at a diagram of the gracilis and the adductor magnus. There can be fat over them, but this girl is skinny.

I like your colors, but maybe throw a little blue reflected light on her skin from the water and her hair. there would also be more of a highlight on her left shoulder.

You can do lineart on Photoshop the only reason why people do not like Photoshop is because it does not have the same stabilizer tool as sai.

With enough practice you may do without that stabilizer tool.

Hello,
Could any of you please tell me a good computer for animation? I'm a complete novice and would like to get into it.
I have asked /g/ but what they tell me is to build my own. I don't want to learn how to build a computer.
I figured I can ask here, maybe you guys can give me some names.
My budget is 2000 (I'm not a rich fag to me a while to save)
I don't think it is something I should make a thread about.

I don't think it's the pencil to digital that makes your drawings look butchered, nor the program. Just keep practicing keeping in mind the basic of things such as pose, proportions and construction rather than the detailed stuff.

Take for example this Nui. Drawn in mspaint with a mouse. Simple and rough yet not terrifying because the proportions and pose are solid.

how they decided to create such a backwards style.

ruin your lineart, it will make smooth robotic curves that will not follow what your hand wants to do and you will never do good
lineart even if you can, if you use it that is.

It's not bad, rather cute, I'm also fine with her bodyshape. It's not obvious that it's Cammy, probably because she is lacking her red accents which she usually has in her outfit. A red cap or green socks with red rim would help.

Things that annoy me are the general lack of anatomy and probably the lack of reference.

There are random lines on her body for muscles where the should be none and lots of weird shit happening at all the joints, esp. the knees.
The knee-cap isn't fixed to the lower leg but it is suspended between ligament and moves in the gap between the tibia and the femur if the leg bends. Right now it looks like it's attached to the tibula. Then there's a weird quadricep muscle (just one lol) and lots of fat (?) above the knee where there should be none. And that is just her right knee. Overall there is lots of anatomical randomness and I can't comment on everything, srry.

Also that red-nose meme.
Sometimes there can be a bit of reddishness on the nose, if it's cold, if someone is drunk, if someone has a runny nose. But most often, it's just random stylization and it looks ridiculous to outsiders. The same as a perfect circular blush can easily look ridiculous. Don't take the red nose thing and the blush too far and use it where it makes sense.
In that vein: Check if your people are always looking out of their eye towards one corner, because there are people who just do that. That is my Tumblr pet peeve.

I have a very hard time getting it right with my guide lines. Here, I pulled up my pencil sketch and inked out my original 'skeleton'. All my art has freaky neck syndrome. Arms are too short in length, I can fix that mistake. Noticed it when adding the rest of the body. That won't fix what is going on above the arms though.

(Minus the arms being completely not the right length to the thighs, this is more or less how all my drawings start.

I'd recommend starting with a different approach. instead of drawing lines and circles, which don't seem to really be helping you, start with a very loose gesture showing the line of action and the approximate locations of the limbs and head. Then CONSTRUCT the torso. Draw it as a bean showing the twist and position of the rib cage and the pelvis. Not that Anon, Mentioning types of PCs for animation on list

Basic tier(non 3D, Potatoshop): CPU(anything affordable like mid to high end AMD) GPU(AMD R9 260 to 270, Nvidia GTX 750 to 760). Since AMD had made cpu/gpu hybrid chips as APUs(A-Series) it wold be an the most affordable option for some(poorfags), but an separate GPU is always better.

Mid Tier(Basic 3D, Advanced 2D): CPU(Any Intel that is like the 2500k anything newer wold overheat so be sure to get proper cooling for it, TL:DR: get the I5) GPU(AMD is usually the best on the GPU side thanks to improvements otherwise the R9 270 to 280, For Nvidia users be the GTX 760(unfortunately)

Ultra Tier(CGI Dev, Studio Grade) CPU(1grand Intel I7, or Server Cpus any brand) GPU(Top end AMD FireGL, or NVIDIA Quadro both are the best for CG because the software works with the hardware, Or if you want something lesser than workstation from AMD R9 290(or x) or Nvidia GTX 980 or the Titan Z

For the rest like motherboards chose anything but Asrock(they fail), And PSU are calculated between watts and max use of power, Otherwise look up the /g/ sticky for rest. Lastly don't buy cheap parts besides the CPU,GPU. And bring a /g/ tard with you if clueless.

That's shit advice. Sai is a crutch, not a tool. The lines may look straight with Sai, but they also look like shit when they're corrected by the computer.

The advice you're giving is equally shit as the advice you're bashing. There's nothing inherently wrong with stabilizer to a small degree--the problem is when there is so much stabilizer that the charm of human error is lost. It's not really an excuse to have wobbly, unconfident lines just because 'it's a sketch'.

>> No.1921089

Actually, a wobbly line is usually a confident line, because it's drawn without chicken stratching.

Wobbly lines (generally) are not confident lines. The only exception i can think of right now is Schiele. Look at schiele's lines, wobbly but they describe form and structure so well.

Stabilizer is good if you used it to get around minor hardware issues, in sai 2-3 is pretty fine, anything after that
will only hurt you work, if you get to the point where the lines you draw don't even follow the movement of your hand even
if you practice and get good you lines will still be robotic and stiff because you use heavy stabilizer.

>>1921089
>Actually, a wobbly line is usually a confident line
It is confident yes, but not necessarily good looking.
>he or she sure as fuck wouldn't be doing anything to correct it by using a tool that straightens your lines.
This is correct, take example of this drawing, to make a confident and looser lineart you have to be able to freely control your lines movement and pressure at any time
to make interesting shapes, if you use heavy stabilizer you'll never achieve this, even if you are actually good.
