Well, this is just a block in, to make sure I get the pose, anatomy, and the gist of the clothes and armor in the places they need to go before I really start working on rendering and color. Pretty much the same with the background. Now that I've decided on which direction the light's gonna come from, more or less, and what time of day it is and all, now I can start making the colors look better and start defining things. I think I still need to make the raised arm a little bigger too, though...
In any case, I appreciate you taking time out to give me feedback.

>> No.1918281

image suffers alot from the specularity of the skin being almost the same as that of the clothing, and both of those being almost the same exact specularity as the armor. it's like the whole figure is a zbrush sculpt rendered in the same material and with the same smooth polished surface.

just like ruanjia overstates edges, sometimes using lasso tool to get the absolute crispest possible edge, you need to overstate material/surface differences in order to achieve an appealing image.

You could push that rim light a bit more if you add more contrast, I added contrast using levels. You could also add some more specularity as the storm troopers are supposed to be a sort of shiny plastic texture right? and I added some blue in the background to contextualise the rim light a bit.

yeah rim light definitely doing gods work there. however the mud oozing out of the narrow crevices and occluded areas is unable to be measured even in cubic kilotons. do you know how the phenomenon of glowing ears when light shines through them works? i forgot it's name (sorry) but i'm sure you know what i mean.

well what causes it is photons bouncing around inside the object, but still making it out and onto your retina. the painting-relevant result is that you get an increase in value, and more importantly, a dramatic increase in saturation.

so when you get surfaces that are very narrowly facing eachother, such as crevices in armor or in your case where the shoulder part connects to the torso, and torso armor faces the bottom of the helmet, a similar effect occurs due to light bouncing back and forth. what does this all mean? you need to saturate those parts. especially when they are of the same muddiness as the dark strip of shadow describing the form of the helmet down the (almost) middle. because this part would NOT get this saturation increase, due to not having a nearby opposing plane from which light could bounce onto.

i bet i'm sounding so incredibly full of myself. thank god for anonimity hahaha

fucking around with the levels really helps if it's starting to feel flat or you feel like the specular highlights aren't giving enough of a bang. You can make the whole thing a bit darker using the levels and then add the highlights after.

He's right, the only one I can identify by the thumbnail is the first one, only because its super simple, the rest I get no sense of depth or form from the thumbnail (the unexpanded thumbnail, I should be able to get some impression of the image from a thumbnail even that small)

The values seem arbitrary and aren't effected by distance, only lighting so they look flat. This is okay if you have colour, because as I believe it, saturation and colour temperature do a better job of illustrating depth. But as thumbnails they kind f fail becuase the values are too blockly and arbitrary.

It's okay to be negative if you're not being an asshole about it, he wasn't. I'm all for praising people, I think morale is important for learning but I hate when people accuse posters of being negative nancies just for giving critique.

>>1918736
I still completely disagree, I could tell what every single one of them were from the thumbnail and I feel a very vivid sense of lighting and depth from all of them. I just don't understand a nebulous criticism of the values like saying they "seem arbitrary", everything is arbitrary when you throw a line down on the canvas, and when they're coming together to form an image I can clearly make out, everything works together to me, nothing looks "arbitrary". They certainly don't look muddy, there's a wide range of values in all of them. But at least you explained your critique, the other guy said something nonsensical and backed it up with vagueries like 'logically inconsistent" and a subjective "they barely read", nothing using objective, provable points, and remember he didn't even give THAT much info at first, just said "they're muddy" which is like saying "this sucks". It lacks info and therefore isn't an actual critique. He was just talking to talk.

idk man, if someone told me my painting was muddy, I'd kind of know where to look to fix it and ask for more information if I needed it. Anyway obviously you like it, but they're not appealing to me at all.
>>1918751
I'm kind of tired because it's late so I can't really explain myself, but I used lighting and value to try and describe depth and space. I didn't tough the second one becuase, I mean guess for what it was it's okay but I wasn't sure what I could do with it.

I added a directional light in the first one becuase it really should be there anyway, but it also adds depth to the windows, they don't just look like black squares in perspective.

In the third one I made it lighter in the distance, you will notices that this adds a much greater sense of depth than just having the lines recede.

In teh fourth one I used the same login in making the background lighter and the shelves out of focus, because they are unimportant to the composition and only distract in the thumbnail. it';s great that they are there but they shouldn't be so prominent. and I darkened the two girls to show that they are in the foreground. yes foreground objects can be light but this is a good way of establishing easily readable depth in the thumbnail phase.

Yeah but what you're describing is not "muddy" Muddiness happens when many unclear tones or colors are used that become unclear and dirty/muddy looking. Again I'll repeat, you don't know what you're talking about.

>> No.1918765

fine but I'm not even the guy who called it muddy. In a way I would say it's muddy in the sense that it uses values that un-unify the whole thing, I'm kind of reaching just to justify the other guy, I'd never use the word muddy personally but I can see where he's coming from.

>> No.1918766

>>1918760
Saying something is muddy doesn't give much to go on. It could be that the colors are too grayed out or desaturated or too similar across the piece, it could be the values are too close all around, it could even mean the gestures aren't clear. In this case though the guy said the values were muddy, which I think most would take to mean they were too similar all around, which is easy enough to see is not the case, so it's kind of moot. I just want to make it clear I wasn't try to hugbox but I don't see any validity to that guy's criticsm. Anyway the changes you made seem to work too, although it looks like you lit it for day, and admittedly I was picture most of these as night or evening so they seemed to work to me. I'm not saying you shouldn't crit the thumbs, I think it's great that you're giving actual info, but you accused me of dismissing the other comment for no reason, I just wanted to explain my reasons.

But I find it hard to mix colors and to create the shadows (both core and cast shadows).
Are shadows more saturated than the middle tones?
Any tips with the colors or about this kind of process?

not necessarily. there is no applicable general rules when it comes to how light works, it's very complex sadly.

>Any tips with the colors or about this kind of process?

paint a fuckton, and fail a lot. in order to build this experience and mileage it helps to have a workflow that doesn't tie you down. paint very opaquely, be economical with your brushstrokes, don't noodle around and most importantly always simplify. build the form efficiently, and accurately. don't overcomplexify and render the crap out of stuff if you aren't getting paid for it, because learning wise you will be wasting your time.

maybe start adding variation in the edges? i think the forms do sort of read but you are probably doing yourself a disservice by trying to describe even smaller plane-changes instead of sticking to the landmark-planes. since you are working opaquely (with the added difficulty of color ontop) i think it would be better to start very simple, with a very primitive shape looking head, and then gradually add forms.

i can see that you were already thinking of planes and their angle to the lightsource, it definitely shows, but a more controlled systematic process would benefit you. i think. i suck at anatomy though, just my two cents.

Breasts are actually a way for the artist to help find the proportions of the torso more easily, they are definitely not superficial detail. Not sure if you are just a noob or what, but hands and feet are almost always only indicated in gesture drawing or even quick figure drawings, because that IS superficial detail at that point and they do not influence the gesture in any way.

It may just be the glare from the photograph you have taken but I would like to say this:
In general all of your whites are very blown out, I took the image into photoshop and using the colour picker the tablecloth and the book paper are both reading 240+ on the brightness, that's almost pure white.
darken your whites all over for the most part, your lightsource is on the right of the image, and yet the tablecloth in the shadow of the rose is actually brigher than the table cloth to the right of it, where your lightsource is coming from.

Secondly, mass your values. That is to say, the greatest contrast should be in the area of your focal point, so decide where that is and apply it.

That said, the image is by no means bad, it is pretty good! It could just be better if you controlled your light areas a bit more :)

A soft fill light? It's shameful to ask, but could you explain what you mean and how I add it in? I agree that the rim light is not angled correctly compared to the light source.

I've actually made plenty of my own personal comics in the past, paneling and story honestly aren't very big issues for me. But I do feel the need to work on composition and my art in general. There is really no shame in asking. It's a good attitude to ask. Better than staying in ignorance.

Well not considering the context of your shot, a fill light would just basically light up the darker parts. It's like the opposite of the rim light, and usually placed as such. A rim light would accentuate the form and figure, and the fill light would show the details.

It doesn't have to be too bright even, but just so it looks less like a silhouette. Unless that's really what you're going for. Which of course goes down to context.
