Figure out which parts you really want people to focus on, then work towards making those clearer?

There's no need to study boring crap, Anon. I never studied shit like this, i always found stuff i wanted to make, and learned just as much from it.

I have this rule where nothing should feel entirely like math, there should always be an element within it that i find interesting and cool. You will learn alot more working with something you're atleast alittle interested in.

And, don't have the miconception that so many people have, where they believe that you have to study chairs to able to paint chairs, or study noses to be able to paint noses. If you study with a bit of varity, you'll find that painting anything at all becomes easier, and everything in your mental library will become available eventually.

One thing the Asian ninja artists do that you're not doing is working in the midtones primarily, and adding the extreme darks and lights later. You seem to be going right for the darks.

Also, they get good at line work before they start worrying about rendering. You can't render something that you can't draw.

You forgot his serratus anterior dude. It's like your external obliques just fade away into the lats. (Serratus anterior begins under the shoulder blade and inserts into the "fingers" of the external oblique)

Also the shoulder-anatomy is a bit messy - especially around trapezius and deltoit. Both are messed up.
Try to understand the skeleton underneath it.
The deltoids have 3 starting points: The outer part of the clavicles, the upper part of the shoulder blade and around a little thing called the anconius, a protrusion from the shoulderblade that interlocks with the clavicles and serves as an anchor point for the humerus.
Does that make sense?
Good luck!

I actually drew the serratus, it was the grey part under the arm but i'm still a bit confused about how they "slide into" the lats so they often look messed up/merging with the lats since they slide into instead of under..

Ah okay, now I see it in the original picture, too.
I think the muscles have slightly different angles, that's what made it confusing to me.
Serratus is coming from the shoulder blade and obliques are coming from the pelvis and that sinnewy plate unter the abs.
Look at the angle of the muscles on the reference pic ort check your own muscles.

what makes him different is the fact that he is very very painterly, loose and efficient yet beyond insanely accurate. it's hard to explain but i believe he applies the art principles in a very dosed and unconventional manner. he doesn't do good anatomy, or good values, or good composition or good anything. he does insane anatomy, but only when and where it intersects with insane composition. he does insane values, but only at the point where it intersects with insane shape design, and nowhere else.

imo you'd have to be very high level yourself in order to efficiently learn from mullins. does what i'm saying actually make sense to anyone?

I get what you mean, Mullins isn't some God among men, if you actually look at the bulk of his work it's pretty shitty (aesthetically, technique-wise)

This painting for example is a fantastic design, it gets across a atmosphere excellently, but you could probably recreate it pretty easily.

But most of his work is bad to study from, I think what you're trying to say is that he uses colour, value, composition brushwork etc in a way that is unconventional, and in order to understand what he is doing and learn from it, you would have to ALREADY understand the principles behind it, thus rendering the study pretty pointless at the novice-intermediate level.

>> No.1917797

I sort of agree, but here's why I like his work.
His work uses all of the points very consistently, nothing seems to jump out as "look, I put all of effort into rendering" or "ignore the bland colours, I worked really really hard on composition"
It makes his work very solid even in his lesser pieces.

Not sure if I should continue it or start something new. Learning curve is a bit steep. I had just finished the nose when I learned you could change opacity (yes I'm that new). typically you would want to use layers for detail passes or any instance where you would benefit from hiding, or preserving details on a certain layers. It's entirely possible to work on one layer though, that's how I prefer to work but I don't tend to paint super detailed stuff.

A few pointers to get you started on what to improve:
introduce some lighter and darker values (shade and highlights) switch back and forth from black and white to colour to get a better idea of how strong your value range is.

don't draw individual strands of hair, even in a moustache paint the overall form of the moustache and then add more detail onto that using lighting. (this isn't the best example but you see how the moustache is one thing, you don't see the strands of hair.

other than that here is of course the fundamental anatomy and brushwork.

Wow do value

I always get to this stage a where I just block in basic shadows super lightly and then completely fuck the rest of the shading. Do you guys have any tips on bringing out the form from here?
