I agree that though upping the values could help you'd have to wrestle with highly contrasting values in a female face - which would making it harder on yourself.

So first and foremost, don't stress that you didn't get it on the first go - portraiture has enough material to warrant a lifetime of study in and of itself. I think your biggest problem with it right now is that you've over-rendered the face and lost the clear-cut modelling that a single light source would provide. Try simplifying it back again into maybe 3 distinct values - a sparing bright value for the top of her head, maybe a hint of it on the top of the screen-right cheekbone and nose; a nice skin tone for the front and screen-right side of her face; and a shadow tone for the rest. No variation, just simple tones. Then work on edges, all nice and soft and ladylike, which will do a huge amount of the work for you. Lastly, if you need to, add further definition where it's needed.

Just keep it simple, you'll get a stronger statement of the forms that way. Also, be sure you establish what the temperature of the light is, and what colors your shadows will be. Is the light warm, making the shadows cooler? Is it cool, making the shadows warmer? Don't worry about sub-surface scattering until you get to edges, either - yes, it's very important in painting a face, but deal with it after you've defined your planes. Use a loaded brush with a saturated tone to help create the edges you need, for example.

I did a small paintover which may or may not be helpful, but I hope something in here helps you along.

Thank you so much! This helps tremendously. You're absolutely right in that it's overrendered, in fact, I've returned to an earlier iteration of the file several times but ended up with the same problem everytime. At one point, I apparently just go nuts with piling on layer after layer. It's a problem I feel I keep running in to when trying to paint digitally. You really put your finger on the sore spot and the main issue I keep having.

Again, thanks so much. You're my hero. Your post and paintover really boosts my morale to retry.

Well... that armour on the paladin (?) is totally senseless. Really, look up some 15th century plate and base your design around that. At least use the base 'functionality' of real suits from that period. At that time, the stuff was near its peak after hundreds of years in development, and nothing like what you drew shows up in history anywhere.

I could say the same thing about the chick, but it doesn't really look like it's meant to be armour, anyway, so I don't really have anything to add there.

I'd also look at revising the warhammer. The perspective seems off, and again, the design doesn't really make much sense. Assuming magic and whatnot, strength might not be as much of a problem, but the shape isn't really sensible. Look to history to see what worked when those kind of weapons were used.

try doing some colour/value thumbs beforehand! i'm not the greatest when it comes to colour, but you seem to be treating it very literally-- just because something's red doesn't mean you have to paint it red! or something like that. your values are also kinda scattered. you've got the darkest tones on his shoulder, inside his sleeve, on the shadow below him and on the background behind him. meanwhile, the orb and the pants are roughly the same value, tonally, so while the bright colour definitely pops out nicely it makes it look really out of place.

and remember that you want to reserve the greatest contrasts for the focal point of the image!

Their torsos are very elongated, I think it's the main problem with the drawing.
Kid's face is pretty weird, the chin, cheek bones, nose and eyebrows give him an old man's face. Make him bald and he will be one of Loomis caricatures. His thumb on the left hand is too low.
But I don't recommend you waste your life tweaking these flaws in this illustration, though. Go get it right on something new.

I can't criticize the painting, as I don't know shit about the subject. I have to say tough it isn't helping to bring up volumes.

But I guess I was wrong about the torso being the main problem really, scrap that. We can all agree the problem we come back to is that bulging goat asshole.

This is great! It really tells a story. There are a few problems but overall it's a really funny picture so don't beat yourself up if it's not up to your expectations.

A few things you could improve: the orc guys body is FLAT below the pecs. You need to show some of the side plane. It doesn't look like he is facing us directly. Adding to that point, the water should hug the form of his torso, it would never be a simple curved line unless his body was a cylinder. And finally the childs face is just not up to the quality of the rest of the image.

Overall super cool though.

>Dat Karasawa

You need to think out where the light is coming from, and it helps a ton if you can break your image down into simple 3D shapes.

For example the head is like a wedge coming out while the arm might be a pair of cylinders with a joint, yet one has shadow on its left side while the other on its right.

Think of how each part is shaped and light it accordingly and consistently.

like the composition, but creature pops up from enviroment to much. That's pretty interesting, a bit sporadic but I can mostly figure out what I am looking at. Took a while to notice the guy at the bottom as his hat looks like a sponge and without the hands it wouldn't give any indication that it's a living thing, none the less a human being.
The text looks killer but I can't read what it's supposed to say for the life of me. Whole thing feels like it's going in a Roger Dean direction which is a good thing. Keep it up.
>>1913663
I'm not familiar enough with ink painting to give a proper critique on your technique but it has good atmosphere. I would have absolutely no clue who the characters were without you explaining the premise. I also feel that us (the viewer) looking into the garden makes one assume that we (us+the figures near the viewer) are entering instead of exiting the scene. I see the figures at the bottom and my brain just assumes they're moving upwards and inwards towards the other focal point. If you reversed the perspective, things may make more sense but that obviously would be a whole new piece. If you could manage to very lightly put in some more mountain tops towards the height of the illustration it could add a lot of depth and grandeur.
>>1913646
Pomegranate, because deep saturated glossy red, and best fruit.
>>1913550
I think, don't quote me on this, but I think the shadows and lines on the face look a bit muddy. Give your reference a closer look and see if you're missing some of the saturation within the shadows. Otherwise it looks like it's headed to a good place.

ink painting guy here, thank you for a proper critique. I knew the characters are a little fuzzy, especially since they are silhouettes and there is not detail. 1. keep more work on underdrawing/underpaiting, bottle seems like it would fall down
2. make fun with colors. The rule is: sometimes colors that you make up from head will do more realistic feel than colors that you think will work. Ad a little green to shadow of bottle, ad a little green on side of book, dont make cloth only white or wall only red

remember: Every object creates a color on other near objects, its hard to visible it with your eyes but your brains feel it and still life master painters uses this with full potential

remind: dont use white to light objects, dont use black to darken them. It looks unrealistic. There is no ultimate white and ultimate black in our eye spectrum of seeing. For example - lightbulb would probably create light with yellow tone in it or blue, so keep this in mind

3. white strokes dont make glass. Glass have own color and creates distorsion (in your case, the book and wall) like you did with bottle. Even if you think its perfectly transparent glass

And im not hating by any means, just want to give good feedback. Its not bad. I actually like it. Color spectrum is solid, brushwork is uncharacteristic (but it will develop) but clean, and composition is fine for me. Just keep going and you will learn a lot of stuff doing it

A fair warning on using the Shift click, it will end up looking to digital if you overuse it. Real life has flaws so try drawing the lines free hand. Looks cool but its really hard to tell what's going on initially. Had to stare at the piece for a good bit to see there was a kid and cat there. There needs to be a greater variation in tone (although you might already know that), and in your next piece more care should be paid towards negative space. There should be a better balance of positive/negative space to help the eye identify important (positive) forms.

hey man,
You are starting to get a few concepts into your head and that's great.
But right now you still have a ways to go before you can apply the fundamentals correctly.

Using this painting as your guide you can now tell a lot about what you need to study next.

Human anatomy
Light / Shadow (Your forms completely lack terminators and cast shadows).
Color theory (You are lightening and darkening your local color using black and white).
Gestures.
Linework.
Design (Fist weapon illidan goblin rogue with a dranei torso), Read a book or watch a documentary instead.
You seem to like scars and stitches, Read Frankenstein and do a series of images from that as you study.

Constantly doing gesture studies 30 a day/4-5 times a week got my in the habit of using gesture. I suggest doing this.

Ofcourse andrew loomis straight up easiest methods to employ when creating a figure.

>Human anatomy
i think the anatomy is ok, its obviously exagerated but maybe im a missing something you could tell me
>Light / Shadow
really? i dont know maybe im doing the terminators too big and there is little bounced light
there are cast shadows, underneath his head
as for the rest well its still a wip but yea the dynamite, arm and the figure itself will cast a shadow
>Color theory (You are lightening and darkening your local color using black and white).
nope i knew even before watching that gnomon dvd that color gets more saturated in the shadows and less in the light as well as shift hue because of the fill light/reflected light
but again maybe im missing something or im being too subtle
>Gestures.
yea its not really the most dynamic pose i have done
>Linework
if you mean the rough drawing, well it was just that, i knew i was gonna paint on top so i didnt bother with lineweight or anything
>Design
i have never played the game but the idea was basically just a goblin with his experiment( a frankenstein goblin)
but im always open to book recommendations

you'd think so, but imo you'd be wrong. see if you picture art skills as divided in 10 principles (composition, anatomy, drawing, values, color/temp, brushwork, whatever), mullins is just so insanely, excessively good, that he is at 11/10 in every discipline.

now we only observe the end result, his image. in which these disciplines interact to create a whole. but the finesse of how mullins arranges these individual disciplines to achieve the end result is completely invisible to us mortals. there is too much going on that is relevant below the surface in his work. i think time spent studying mullins is time spent very superficially studying, inefficiently learning. he's too good.

was practicing repetion of forms, and seeing the visual effects of copying you're own drawings.

iterations on previous drawings really brings into view the importance of doing practice sketches before you start a painting. Really defines a great artist is knowing which iteration will be the one worth painting because you have to get the end results organically to make a great painting. I find paintings done as exact copies of a drawing are lackluster. Kind of the same as the lifeless results you get when you copy a photograph exactly.

for poses just try to think of different angles to view the pose. what would be interesting. think of the mood of the figure, how can you enhance it. You may not even need to change the pose, but make the depth more convincing, or design a more suitable costume or silhouette.

Some critique for your original one, the arm with the hand on the book. You could enhance the sense of depth, maybe add a crease or cross contours, since the forearm is coming forward in space.

I do like it though, the expression on the face is nice, and the hair is really nice. The handling of the lines in the clothing is not too shabby either.

For the studies, not too much to say about em. The goose one is quite nice, nice expression and pose. I may have pushed the sense of weight underneath the bottom hand more, but that's really the only thing I feel worth commenting on.
