You've got it backwards. The composition of the piece is what gives it its power, not the other way around. Satan is more detailed and the radiating lines of his wings and legs pull the eye to him.

Yeah, now that they are niceing up all the art for kiddie consumption, think what little pussies they will grow up to be.

Grow a sack, man, childhood is not for rainbows and lollipops, it's for preparing for the real world. And when you raise little crotch-goblins who can't handle a scary picture, you get adults who live in your basement because they're too scared of the fryolator to get a job.

i dont really think the removal of creepy art is whats making kids gigantic pussies. im saying just i was personally traumatized by that one pic in particular for reasons out of many that were in those series of books. i was leling at the fact that they have the potential to make a decently lasting impact and it (was at least) readily available to them

open doors have so many deeper meanings, it's subjective to you why that would terrify you

the distortion on top

overall composition and colours/feel of the painting

it's just a cold, dead, empty room with an overload of doors of which we as the viewer have no idea where they will take us

too many uncertainties in an atmosphere that already leaves us distorted

you just want to GTFO

also painting is called white doors by Vilhelm Hammershoi

Most of those works aren't terrifying, just bizarre/grotesque. What makes a piece terrifying is the feeling and emoticons it passes to the viewer and now how gruesome it is.
It's like horror versus torture porn movies. One just makes you feel unsettled/disgusted, while the other gives you the creeps.

I will never understand horror. I can't get even slightly miffed by anything in this thread, any horror movie hollywood has put out, or any fake ghost story. It doesn't scare me at all.

What is scary is thrillers. actions and consequences. Fear of the unknown doesn't really cut it.

and an interesting point. I'd speculate that sex is a moment of extreme vulnerability. Passion replaces rational thought, lust replaces self, and our biggest secrets are revealed when we remove our social garments. Sex exposes our under bellies and I'm certain that has some explanation as to why slasher flicks love to slay characters when they're swept up in their emotions.

I think it's because we're in a creepy thread, and with that mindset, seeing these dismal, empty rooms stirs the imagination. Everything else in the thread is right there in front of you--then you see these slightly-gloomy rooms, and you still expect something creepy. It's spooky because of the composition, yes. Everything is slightly warped and off angle which makes the viewer feel unsettled. Then you must consider that the doors aren't right. The handles aren't normal handles (one lacks one at all) and they are different. Again this asymmetry evokes that unsettling feeling in the viewer.

Once you're in that unsettled mindset you begin to wonder about the open doors. Have you ever been in a house at night on your computer with a door open to your back and felt extremely uneasy? It's a very similar feeling. The doors are open, there's no security or protection. It's creepy because it's unsettling but doesn't present an overt threat, just a situation where you'd be exposed to a hidden one.

Your ancestors were afraid of tigers lurking in the tall grass. They look at the grass and it seems normal but something makes them uneasy. They can sense the tiger waiting in the grass.

It's more or less the same thing. It taps into that same ancestral feeling of hidden dangers lurking.
