Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1896570

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

What those characters all have in common is that they are stylized to the point where they don't have human anatomy, but rather consist of purely simplified shapes. That's why these cartoon characters are appealing to almost everyone and don't gross people out. They aren't humans with animal heads and fur.

Not to mention there's a class of furry that is more or less feral than your usual animal. >>1902655
Yeah, I was going to warn you about the loli but I didn't feel like it.

As far as other artists go, I can't think of more that give me the same vibe. Do you have any artists that you aspire to somewhat imitate? Maybe I could suggest more based on that.

Line economy can be worked on by visualizing big shapes first, working from general to specific. I'd recommend gathering a bunch of expression refs and trying to get the same expressions with as few lines as possible (google images 'actor expression sheet). Once you learn how to do that in the simplest way, you can start adding more lines without breaking the threshold of creepyness.

Try looking up Elvgren's use of reference (some are in a thread on /ic/ right now about works using reference). Notice how he removes unflattering lines from his model's face in his finished work (such as the furrowed forehead caused by some facial expressions).

Aside from the faces, I like your stuff. As said earlier you will want to look more into how people actually pose, strike the poses you're drawing yourself, adjust till you feel comfortable. I can see potential in you for sure.

Part of moe is bringing character into the drawing. This just doesn't have any charm to it.

It seems like you got a little confused in how you want to portray her. The body language is pretty serious and straightforward, but it looks like she's trying to make a cute, friendly gesture. Figure out her personality then exaggerate it.

This is just a quick example of two ways you could push it.

I like Joel Jurion too, Sanders has a few I like as well. Look at how they handle expressions as well. It's not a cop-out drawing if you're learning something from a study of their work.

As far as other artists goes, it's a tough sell as I stray more towards eastern stuff stylistically (but I love my western golden age illustrators and european academic painters for technique). Joel's work is reminiscent of disney artist and disney sketch artists are generally great at expressions that are IMHO more expressive than anime styles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s_Nine_Old_Men is a good jump-off point for all the talent there. Don't discount their new stuff though. I enjoy some Don Bluth and Garrett Hanna as well.

Yoh Yoshinari has a more western look compared to other japanese illustrators. Now that I think about it your stuff also reminds me of the artist of Drakengard 2 (artbook scans here: http://g.e-hentai.org/g/485674/11f47fa326/)), especially the characters on page 34 and 35.

I like the character design. Her torso looks like a confused hairball though, Try cleaning it up. If you want it to look more complex to contrast with the more simplified skirt, add some pockets, war medals, maybe some japanese-style archery chestplate (would make the random pauldron-thing feel less out of place)?
The boringness is because your piece lacks story. We are just looking a pretty girl straight-on with a sword, this looks to be the start of a concept art rather than an illustration. Did she just kill a man? Is she some kind of wartime idol? What does she do?

>> No.1902966

In that case, I agree with >>1902947
The pose is too stiff. Try looking at images of japanese idols. They kick up a leg, make cute hand gestures, they wink. It's all in the body language. Also, even though she's not doing a very good job of it, having a weapon behind your back is threatening body language. Maybe you could try giving her a diamond composition by placing her right arm on her hip and here other arm hold her sword out to here side with the point of the blade near her feet. The sword lacks weight as it stands.

It looks like you wanted to do something more detailed than just shadow and light with the coloring and added a darker value where light and shadow meet. That does happen in real life, but not on all occassions and it's clear you don't quite understand how it works yet - the result looks more like a lot of unnecessary lines.

I recommend sticking with only light and dark for now (like you did on the white parts), once you can do that decently you can move on to more complicated stuff.

As for practicing cell shading, just look at how your favourite artists/anime do it. Ideally try to understand why they made which choice.
You could also read up more on how light and shadow work in real life and then simplify it, but that might still be a bit overwhelming at the moment.

Ehh... It's very well polished, and I kind of like the style, but's it's also pretty obnoxious. Though I guess it's fitting for a very obnoxious song. The hair and tail look oddly stiff in a lot of scenes, they should have made sure it all flowed better before they did the final lines.

I'm kind of sad that the talent and time was wasted on such a fucking shitty song.

But isn't what defines animemanga in contrast with western cartoons the depiction of more realistic bodies alongside a heavily stylized face?

Thanks for taking the time to criticize thoroughly. The more I read the more I realized I just vaused massive confusion by drawing over another drawing. The figure in the back is not supposed to be part of the clown girl. The hairline was intentionally high but except from that any abatomy errors are just mistakes. Just wanted to have a little bit of fun without using any ref and thought I would post it. I kinda like the feel of it, although it is confusing. Here is another drawing from me a little older

Right now it looks a bit off disconnected because the head is a bit small (with stylization like that you usually see rather large heads) and the lines are so much thinner than on the rest of the picture - at least the outline of her face should be thicker.

Do you have the construction sketch still?
You have this problem where you seem to focus on just one particular area and not concentrating on the overall drawing at the beginning.

Limbs on her right side / right hand looks generally so much larger compared to her left.

>> No.1905039

>>1905038
And just to add to this, the larger limbs on the left is really stuffing around with the perspective of the figure, its like her left side is meant to be close to us but the proportion is larger but it shouldn't be if you follow the axis of the shoulder and hips as it's going away from us.

Ok sorry about the wait.

From your construction you can see you have some proportion issues and just consistency. Her left arm from the shoulder to the elbow it's roughly the same size as to the elbow to the wrist, all fine for style, but on her right arm, the forearm is greater than her upper arm. Also making the hand bigger in the final and moving the elbow down to compensate makes a fat limb.

Second issue is with the legs and general posing. The thighs you pretty much drew it straight down, then moved the calves in opposite direction. Cover the image from above the knees with your hand and you can see what I mean. Cover the image from above the knees and your lower legs don't even look like they come from the same person.

>> No.1905084

>>1905072
I can't really understand the pose like you were trying to knock the knees but then don't. It's very unbalanced and doesn't look at all feasible at all.
To be honest it feels like went straight on into construction of the individual parts instead of using a gesture to connect it together.

Keep perspective in mind, simple guides as straight parallel and slightly converging lines from shoulder to shoulder, chest, waist, knees and floor keeps your figure in check and proportioned.

Also draw an ellipse on the floor for your figures shadow and imagine where the feet will be touching the floor in regards to that shadow if your pose ever seems awkward.

>> No.1905695

The ball on the left seems much smaller than the one on the right. Is it supposed to be so?

The hands are very weak compared to the rest of the figure. The left thumb on the left figure seems too long. The foreshortening on the right forearm is improper. It seems as if it wraps around her torso like a snake.

Both hands of the right figure appear small. The left hand does not seem to wrap around the ball. The hand pose is unattractive, and also flattens the ball. Try holding a ball or study baseball pitchers. The pinky and ring fingers tend to hold the base of the ball, while all the other fingers balance it. Don't cup the ball with the palm, hold it with fingers.

Her right shoulder seems small, or left shoulder seems large. Or maybe it's a bit of both.

The left foot is small when compared to the right, and appears to float in midair because of how the ball of the foot is visible. I'd recommend either flattening the entire foot against the ground in proper perspective, or redraw it so that she is resting only on the heel, with toes clearly pointed into the air. Don't do something in between like this for a stand alone illustration, it's ambiguous.

The contours of the left leg are not proper given the pose. Redline it for yourself and connect it to the iliac crest, and you should get a clearer sense of the problem.

Everything else can be chalked up to stylistic choice.

These are quite nice actually.

Just two things:
Is the left one a child or an adult small person?
Small people have small legs, children's legs are almost as long as their torso plus head. Just check where Loomis has put the midpoint, the cross in the pic.

Second thing:
If you show the white above the iris, it will always look like he's surprised or shock. At least in that style.
Mark Kennedy wrote seomthing about cartoon eyes and realistic eyes here:
http://sevencamels.blogspot.de/2006/10/things-they-dont-teach-in-art-school-2.html

Keep up the good work!

>> No.1905814

just to add:
You can actually pull of small legs on children or floating pupils when you stylize the figure enough. But as it is now, the style of the pictures looks too realistic so it looks like a mistake. (In Paranorman everyone has ridiculous small legs)

The hands seems very weak indeed now that I look at them with fresh eyes. Her shoulders are awkward, I'll try re sizing them to see how it looks.

The feet and the leg problem is there too, although the pose of the feet is like that but I'll add ground to cover that up later, they're in a beach, so the ground wound't be flat.

There was another mistake with the white chick, where her chin didn't lined up with the line I did, but it's corrected now.

I don't agree with the arms wrapping her body, though.

Anyway, thanks for the critique, I just don't know if it's worth making all that effort with this kinda of pic and get this long to finish it when the initial intention was to make those at a faster rate.
