Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1892708

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Why do my illustration and style gets worse when I get to charcoal? I find it pretty odd that I draw like a tard when I use it but I'm pretty good with graphite.

Still learning how to draw so take this with a grain of salt.

Proportions seem odd to me have varying sizes in your drawing. Don't take this as the stick of truth I just resized parts to fit 'to my tastes' but I am sure there are still alot of errors in there.

This is not necessarily true, given the positioning of the arm in >>1897913 . The forearm is pronated, therefore the biceps are relaxed- there is a concave-looking contour formed between the deltoids and the extended bicep.

You can try this yourself by pronating/supinating your forearm and the 'bump' of your bicep will appear to rise and fall

You just start painting with low opacity and go over and over and over things until you it looks like.

Problem is I don't really know how the "muscles" work together, currently trying to apply some basic shapes as a replacement for these muscles with a complex pose but it always look bad when rendered, specially when perspective/foreshortening comes in. I have been drawing too much portraits/busts that when i try to do some full body piece i fail at the legs and hips part.

The remedy is lots and lots of simple gesture and construction drawings. Really no avoiding it.

Just don't make everything look nice, remember it's for practice and once you do the gesture, 3d form, then MOVE ON. Get enough information on the page that the pose is readable.

You start reinforcing your sense of proportion with each one you do.

Don't worry about muscles or anatomy for now, they will come in due time.

It also appears that you just copied the iguana.

It's ok and I think you should just finish it and make another one ad infinitum.
I see that you're drawing "on the spot", so I recomend you to delve into structure.

>> No.1898660

I can tell that you've gone over some of the thicker lines several times. Line weight is something that should vary through your pen pressure, set it up so that you can achieve very thick thin strokes. Each line should only take one confident stroke. Sculpting your lines with smaller strokes to make them look like the strokes of a thick brush doesn't look good. It's easy to tell because they look a little wobbly and lack flow.

I want to draw streetviews and cityscapes also. is there a way to establish persp guidelines without extending my canvas all the time ? in ps i extend the guides by croping and then crop it to normal size but when i need extra lines after that i cant cuz i cropped image out. I remember some anons trying to translate them in one thread and according to them what he does is he just draws the contours, then he checks everything by doing those "x-lines" across the body that you can see in some of his posts, I don't think anyone really understood how to interpret those lines though.

It's mostly a matter of practice, the better you get at anatomy the better and more pleasing your faces will look. It'll likely take some time, but don't worry you'll get there eventually.

That said, you could also do studies of faces from your favourite artists' work in addition to the other stuff. Try to figure out how they went about simplefying the features and which parts they exaggerated or omitted to create a nicer looking result.

(Man I should have read the entire thread before answering.)

Anyway, if you're unhappy with your lines then you need to practice them.
Do the exercises from the Dynamic Sketching video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk).). Try to hold your pen(cil) lightly (you actually have more control that way even if it might not seem so at first - if your grip is very tense your lines will get shaky) and draw from the shoulder or elbow, not your wrist.
Once you feel like you can do that easily you can look into line weight.

- "Bridal gloves" are excellent for constructing hands.

Please describe your process with respect to the linework.

Anyway, onto the criticism, here's the anatomy on the catgirl.

I think that the proportions are fine. I made her legs a little longer than the canon on purpose to really give that part of her body emphasis (she's not supposed to be human after all), so by default, her arms have to be longer to make up for it.

Her forehead though, I think it only looks big cause of how her ears are placed, and again, not a real human.

As for the Muse, the torso is fine this time around, it only looks that way cause she's a petite skinny bitch (read, anorexic). Here's the construction on it. I gave the legs more musculature and defenition, still maintaining that skinny look, which, while I understand may not be for everyone, it's how I wanna characterize her, she's short, skinny, and bitchy.

I think that overall, it is an improvement over the last one. The hair looks more natural, and she actually looks more like a mage, and less like a groupie (while still maintaining that music-lover aspect which I do wanna keep for specific reasons).

Here's the construction for her with some overlay line art. You can kinda make out the outlines for the torso and such, it's proportionate man.

An adventurer would not be wearing a crop top, short shorts and pantyhose. Unless she's exploring the mall or her sexuality.

I know that anime is well known for the impractical outfits and whatnot but these clothes don't communicate "adventurer" or even "someone who spends time outside," they aren't telling the story you're telling us.

Throw in some pouches, she couldn't even fit a phone in those small, tight pockets. Give her a bad of some description, you can't go exploring without supplies. Maybe a leather jacket or vest or something made of material that doesn't look like it would tear the moment it met an abrasive material. If she insists on wearing stockings, give it a few runs. Most chicks can't even walk through a city without getting a run or two.

>> No.1900898

>>1900893
Like you said, it's not exactly practical.

And that's kinda like the beauty of fiction. It doesn't have to entirely follow real world rules.

Anyway lets look at the new one.
>>1900889
I think the Shoulder Pad, Elbow Pad, and wraps help characterize the fact that she's not just going to a mall. Sure, she has an extravagant style, but normal people don't dress like that.

I insist on the short shorts, the stockings, and a belly revealing shirt. She'll have other clothes in regard to the story, but they all follow that general style.

She does carry a bag, I just didn't draw it in for that concept art. It's like a sort of messenger bag.

I also feel like the emblem on her scarf helps get across the fact that she's a mage of sorts. Which is why she doesn't carry many bag aside from that pouch on her bum.

I think that as far as characterization and anatomy, I'm very satisfied with her final design. I'm kinda drawing inspiration from Daisuke Ishiwatari and such in designing her, so she's not meant to look realistic and conventional. She's meant to look cool/attractive.

I actually want guidence in regard to presentation/line art/line weight.

Well it isnt about practicality or making your character unattractive/pain/common, it's about visual communication/cues of the character for the viewer which is important, fantasy or otherwise. Can you try this for me just once, I want to see if it would help.
Draw a body but try your hardest to forget/ignore all the ratios and rules you have studied over the years and just draw what looks/feels right.
A few years ago I worked myself into a dead end because I was so caught up in proportions and following rules that I couldn't draw intuitively any more. When I stopped obsessing over the rules I improved so much, all the info was still in my brain but i wasn't actively thinking about it all the time.
It's what worked for me, maybe it will help you.

I've done tons of other stuff, and tend to venture out and explore more with those. Especially with the assignments I get in class.

But you are right, I do tend to kinda get stuck in my own rut when I work a lot on certain things, and it¡s kind of an effort to break out of that tunnel vision.

I went ahead and had people choose between that one and mine, the original. Funny enough a lot of people agreed with yours, saying that she looked very skinny.

Now, none were manga fans, so they don't matter.

I DO have one question though, why must she follow the anatomical canon if she's a fictional character. What's the issue with her being so skinny when her inspirations are also equally skinny, or even more. Pic related.

i think it is because mine was better stylized
and i can assure you the guys that make blazblue know their anatomy pretty well, thats why they can make chracaters anatomically incorrect but yet so appealing
it has nothing to do with her being skinny or not
it is because you styilized it in such a way that makes her look unnapealing
it is very noticeable that you dont know anatomy and are just copying, look at the head and shoes you did and compare them to mine
another very important thing is also, structure which yours have none. you can see that specially in her shorts compare both yours and mine( i fixed it a bit more and make her skinny in pic related)
just practice your anatomy and you will improve

I actually drew her entirely from imagination in that last one using only previous sketches for reference.

In al seriousness though, thanks for thebpointers, mainly the reference pic.

I don't plan on changing her design anymore, since personally I'm perfectly satisfied withbit, and I think that's what matters most.

Most of the negative comments I got were just that theblegs were too skinny that she needed a sandwhich. I showed sone of thosevgirls pics of BRS and Noel and they made the same remarks. They liked MY face bettervthough. ;)

Anyway, like I said, she's modeled after a girl who IS that skinny, and she prefered the original (though Cal has a better ass), and both my profs graded the assignment and complemented the construction. Not saying I'm the best, I can always get better, but thebpoin I'm making is that I feel tgatvpreferencevhere is subjective.

Thanks anyway tho.
