Is this a decent enough design for a tattoo? It's not necessarily anything too fancy, I'm probably going to end up giving it to the real tattoo artist and he'll change it up as he sees fit. But if I hand it to him, is he going to scoff or laugh in my face? Keep in mind this is going on someone's body. A friend asked me to draw it up for her, she's the one who wants it. Just tell me if there's anything wrong please, if not for my sake then for the sake of the person who is going to have this permanently inked on their body.

I have an odd question, maybe it's odd maybe it isn't I just don't know where to ask it.

How come when I draw in ms paint it's so expressive, easy to portray shapes and landscapes, and simply fun.

And when I draw in a real program such as photoshop it's rigid, uninteresting, hard to even get basic things to look decent.

I'm just baffled and lack any enthusiasm to use photoshop or sai.

>> No.1888754

>>1888750
U can draw with whatever u want program. Its not like "you have to use ps" but it is the industry standard and the good program.. If u just want to use ms paint for urself and have fun with it, why not? It's nice to try other programs though, there's also painter and clip/manga studio. So have fun, if u want to go industry u have to ps though

>> No.1888759

>>1888754
Ah, it's really hard to explain this shit.

Essentially, it's not that I don't want to use ps or sai, exactly the opposite, I really want to.

It's the fact that my drawing are quite decent in a simple program like paint, and utter shite while using ps.

>> No.1888761

That is odd indeed. Maybe your tablet is screwed up and isn't working as well in PS or Sai. You could always try to use the pencil tool in PS/binary tool in Sai. Maybe that would be like the MS Paint experience?

I looked at your other work and this is an insane improvement over your traditional work (pic related), especially given that this is your first attempt at digital work. If you're bullshitting us, then fuck you. If not, great job. However, I am skeptical given the quality of your other traditional work. Why is this one so much better than the others?

There's not much to critique unless we can see the reference photo. The skin tones are very well colored, and it seems you achieved your goal. If you wanted to finish this up, you could really work on the towel a bit.

I'm not an expert on airbrushing but I do like your picture, it's a really good resemblance of Sigourney Weaver.

If I had to guess at something to improve upon, I'd say she needs more range in lighter shades. The shadows that you've done are great and provide a lot of depth but there aren't any highlights anywhere, except for the reflection in her eyes.
It doesn't look natural since a human will have more of a range of how light gets reflected from the surface of our skin, the left of her face looks undefined compared to the shading on the right.

Concentrate on where to apply the highest values of light.

>> No.1889405

>>1889403
Okay, that makes sense. I actually thought the left side of her face was too bright so I darkened it, it's impressive that you were able to point that out! I'll work on the lighter areas of whatever subject I choose to airbrush next. Do you think the hair could be improved, or is it good enough as is? I tried using a harder brush for the single strands of hair but they stand out too much compared to how soft the rest of the image is. Thanks for responding!

>> No.1889412

>>1889405
I reckon that the hair is good, plenty of detail, but perhaps not enough variety.

Like I said I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to airbrushing, but you'd want the image to be realistic no? The softened quality is too uniform and might need to be broken up by lots of 'harder' information throughout the image, to avoid it looking like seeing through a filter. Keep it up!

If you're going to brag with this then yeah, cheating yourself. Just think for 5 seconds if youre going to pretend you did this legit, and people start asking you to draw them, lol

Colors, and rendering look really nice, again, which is what you should take out of this EXERCISE

You know how the nose meets the brow ridge, but you didnt draw it, because you know its a subtle change, and doesnt warrant a construction line.

Alright, beginner question here. How many of you use perspective lines before you start each drawing? Is this something every good artist does when they are constructing a rough for a drawing, even of a single character? Should I use this as I'm just starting out, and I want to draw humans, but I want them to be correctly in space and not completely flat or off. Is it just better to guess with perspective and foreshortening or how does that work?

no

you have it all wrong

you learn perspective until it is ingrained in your head

until it becomes second nature

that's when whatever you draw will naturally be in perspective

do not draw humans when starting out

stick to perspective with simple shapes

until you completely internalize it

Good Luck!

The hand on the butt of the blade is wonky. It doesnt look like shes really gripping it. Swords are heavy, and if she doesnt grip it, a good amount of flesh is gone from her leg.

If her right leg [from her prospective] is facing out like that, the whole body would be slanted to support her center of gravity, this case being her hips. Consequently, her blade would have to touch the ground.

I assume she is wearing a bra.

Also, why are the fibers on the outskirts of the clothes so scribbly? Some of them do scribble, but I dont know.

Tattoo artists are shown all sorts of retarded reference pics on a daily basis, they won't laugh at you for it because that's unprofessional and they know they will lose a lot of work with that kind of attitude.
There are a lot of things to consider regarding tattoo design. They should flow with the area of the body they will placed on, with the focal points visible from a single angle. They also need extra contrast compared to a drawing on paper as the skin will age and take some sun damage. Also, details for ants, such as the little pocketwatch thing are too small for tattooing and will become a blurry mess as the piece ages.
Not trying to be mean here, just recommending that you leave tattoo designing to the professional artists that deal with this medium, and it's many constraints, on a regular basis.

The corner of the jaw should line up with the mouthline when viewed from the front. In yours we're seeing the underside of the head, so the corner of the jaw should be lower than the mouthline, but instead you've made it much higher than the mouthline.

The OP version was better in many respects. The mouth had more personality, the jaw wasn't as bad, and the eyes weren't as uncanny as they are right now.

I honestly feel like the same hairdo you keep painting is giving you issues. It's harder to get a good grasp on the whole head, to place the ear in the right spot, and to keep the perspective consistent. Try starting your head constructions with a box in perspective, then slowly carve away the head keeping that perspective consistent. Focus on major forms and major planes, working your way to an asaro head-looking planar model. When you have that and it works, add in things like hair, irises, anatomical subtleties, etc.

As it stands, I feel like you're hindering yourself with your current method of doing things. Instead of doing a meticulous construction, getting the drawing correct, then recovering the drawing during your painting, your approach feels rushed. It looks like you find the painting and rendering to be the fun part and that you're eager to jump right into it. Quick sketch, quick tweaks, then render. You then spend the bulk of your time noodling around and guessing until things look right. It feels like you happen to stumble into a state that works, instead of having a plan and executing it methodically. I honestly believe you'll learn a lot more if you aim to get each step correct before moving on (especially the drawing), instead of constantly trying to salvage things because you already invested time towards painting them.

Ok guys, thanks once again

This is as far as I can go for now, I will try to put more of your advice in the next iteration.

As for /ic/ critique, in general terms I would say it has helped me. There are times that I do ponder about the validity of some of the advice given to me and others but as some of you have already experienced coming up with good critique in other communities or irl is incredibly hard.

I know I have issues with my current workflow, knowledge of fundamentals, etc... (I'm working on that).

It's just that I can't leave a piece without knowing I did what i could with it. Besides tehmeh/Robert Henri said something about sticking to an idea and treat drawing as a problem that has a solution in order to learn more and better so I try to do that, it is not like I throw strokes at random hoping to create a happy accidents everywhere.

Sorry if my redaction has errors, it's almost 3:00 am here.

See ya later.

My two tips.
Quit it with the boring poses.
Never give your character a gun in one hand and a sword in the other. It's bad form, overkill, redundant, etc. Holster the gun, have her in a dynamic pose with just the sword, and your image is already 100x better.

Still looks really nice, but it's not the fact that you gave her eye shadow, it's just that it doesn't quite match imo. She looks pretty dignified, and I feel like she'd be wearing subtler makeup than that. This looks like what you'd see in a fashion mag or on a girl at a club, not so much a day to day I want to look nice at work kind of makeup. But, it's a totally subjective nitpick.

How do you choose where the perspective lines are when the vanishing point is way off the canvas? I've seen people draw seemingly random lines and make the character based on them. Is it just wherever you want them, and just make them parallel with a little slope so they meet up eventually off the canvas, or what? I don't want to do the whole vanishing point thing, just add some quick perspective lines to make a quick sketch out of.

I just put the persective the way i'd best match my sketch. then fix the perspective in sketch and draw ontop.

You could just draw random lines, as long as both vanishing points are on the same horizon.
not allways as accurate tho.

Well even if the piece is abandoned does that mean the artist can't learn from it? Like for instance I posted that drawing of Sol Badguy before and there was a lot wrong with it so I restarted it and did better. And even that one had its problems, and while I didn't apply all the critique I got for the second one to the picture itself, I did learn that I should go brush up on arm anatomy and that I should push my poses and compositions. I mean imagine if you went to a life drawing class and you never did any gestures or quick studies, only hour long studies. How would your teacher catch and break you of bad habits? I would hope people aren't withholding feedback because they want to make sure it only goes into making a finished piece, no studies or sketches allowed. I get it about taking the artist seriously, but you've only lost a few minutes of time if they don't go back to it, and maybe the advice would help someone else.

The eyes are too big and the eyelids don't look like they're wrapping around sphere shaped eyeballs, they appear to be stretching flat across her face. Look at some real eyes and try to see how the eyelids look like they're wrapping around something. The bridge of the nose is fine but the nostrils and that part where it meets the upper lip in the center need to be pulled to the left, right now it looks like her cheeks are pushing her nose forward. The mouth should also be realigned slightly more to the left along with the nose. You'll probably have to realign the jaw to match, as well. Otherwise, nice.
