1. GOOD AT DRAWING
2. GOOD AT VALUES/COLOR
3. GOOD AT RENDERING

learn anatomy, get really good at it, before you even consider making polished pieces of art.

once good, learn lighting, values and color theory in art.

once good, learn how to render and polish paintings.

You're done!

you can't sketch if you dont have the time, likewise you wont be able to make a decent looking value painting if your sketch is shit, likewise you cant render and polish if your values suck neckdicks.

Not everything is bad on your image, learn the planes of the face, it correlates to animu too. Learn anatomy, ALWAYS use reference images, increase your perception of reality. What are you drawing, if you are observing, are you really drawing that thing, or are you fucking it up but not realising. That's the difference between a good artist and bad artist. Being able to see your faults and work on them.

I'm assuming this is acryllic due to the watery like dripping on the bottom.
Overall its pretty good/alright. The use of colors works well with the highly saturated blues and oranges on the zebras. I'd personally push back the background with more grey (currently I think the slightly saturated green takes away from the zebras) or even imply a horizon line.
The painting skills are pretty solid with the heads of each zebra (not perfect, but still works nicely); but it definately seems you got overwhelmed with their bodies and rushed through it, creating poor and unconfident strokes(especially with the right zebra's ass).
I want to see bolder and more strong strokes near the bottom the painting. I think you shouls go over with your browns and orange tones first, then overlay those dark blue stripes to avoid the shakey and inconsistent marks between the blue stripes.

Best wishes and happy painting!

you need time to adjust, draw daily, 1-2 hours atleast bare minimum, im clocking in 5 hours now just barely. You will eventually gain a preferred method at drawing. Also One more thing, pic related. Fix your DAMN brush settings if you haven't already!

ps- you still need to get better at anatomy, upload a pencil sketch, so I can determine whether you need to get better at anatomy or not, but judging by the arm you definitely need to spend more time on it.

I draw all day, every day. I mean I realize I need to get better at anatomy, but I don't think I'm so bad I can't start working seriously on this whole digital thing while I brush up on that. I'm better at drawing normal people, I have a hard time exaggerating anatomy. To save time on debating whether I know how to create form and lighting too, here's something I drew in pencil that I painted over digitally, posted it before but whatever. Here's a link to another pencil with digital, with normal people so you can see how I am with that, if it'll help http://darke-imp.tumblr.com/image/101182082493
Also I have CS2 so, it doesn't have whatever that button was you referred to.

youre not as bad. youre mediocre and uninteresting as of now, but youre not bad, dont worry.

take that anon very lightweighted, its one of those pserudo-elitist spergouts. you dont need to draw everyday, you just need to draw as much as its necessary for you to learn. in fact, many times you improve a lot is when you do not draw for a certain time, but you travel (for example). i mean that anon has some points but you dont need to spent 1/2 bare minimum on your works, that some bullshit. in fact, get days off, weeks off, think about how you paint and go visit some galleries or somehing.

Ow.
That's okay though, I know it's only because I'm still figuring out the whole digital thing, once I get more comfortable with it, I can make more exciting pieces, like I have with pencil.
Anyway, like I said I do draw everyday anyway, it's all I do, and it's all I care about doing, really, so I don't mind that but it sucks to draw something so bad that someone thinks I'm barely starting out just because I'm using a different medium. That shouldn't be the case.
This is so frustrating though.
I guess all I can do is suffer with it until I get used to it, but I really would like to know how those kinds of drawings are structured. Maybe I'll look for some of those time lapse videos.

and for chrissake, dont get influenced by the radical autists of /ic/. dont have precise schedules if you dont enjoy them, dont do photostudies and bullshit like that if you dont want to. paint and draw from head, and try to convey new concepts. try and think of your painting as someone elses and consider if youd find it interesting.

You get good at what you practice, so if you want to invent stuff you should start practicing that. At the same time it can be very difficult to create something without input, so studying lots of different things is a good idea.

As for the digital part, I'd say you're on the right track with looking up other artists' videos to see how they do it. Doesn't mean you have to do it the same way, but try out different techniques and find out what works for you.

I can see what you were trying to do by drawing the black shape around the hair. But, you should try to compose the black value shape so that is doesn't seem like it's an actual object. Easy way to this is by making it a square, or a circle.

Also, I would consider exaggerating your occlusion shadows, like where the leg meets the chair, where the arm meets the desk, and the crevices where the arms meet the torso.

Anon I am not trying to insult you, just giving pointers. You must understand, to progress further (I can 100% tell you are in an artist block, trying your best to make some original/power work but finding yourself repeating stuff, am i right?) you need to learn how to sketch properly in relation to work.

Now if you want to, render this image of mine, you will notice the difference in terms of how powerful your art will become with a stronger original sketch.

I am in no ways good, I have further to go as well, the sketch was done with 12.5 minutes timed.
You can do it, Your rendering is nice and efficient, I like that, all you have to do is DRAW, and LEARN where MUSCLES are and HOW THEY DIFFER IN SITUATIONS. (E.G FLEXING, BENDS, MOVEMENT, FORESHORTENING) I know you will get it down faster than you think.

You picked a tough pose to read. The arms look too beefy, and are competing with the bulk of the chest.

maybe try to do 3 more poses that are easier to read, it should be pretty fast since you are just blocking in values

>> No.1884509

>>1884490
The whole thing is poorly constructed. On the right, the pose makes it seem like that side of his body should be further away from the viewer than the side on the left of the picture, yet everything on the right is bigger. The ear flaps or whatever aren't the same size and have the same perspective-defying issue to them. Also, the material doesn't read as metal to me. Metal, at least I think, should have more solid shapes and sharper lines, definitely sharper highlights. You oughta grab that one pic of Jackman doing that pose and try to copy it and then get some ref for the metal too.

constructing the image with simple forms would be a good way to start here! this dragon is really long and snake-like, so making him out of a bunch of cylinders seems best. i feel like you can get away with a lot when it comes to dragons, so don't be afraid to play around with a more interesting or dynamic pose, too. on the drawing i did, i made parts of the dragon overlap, which might seem small and insignificant, but can help create a sense of depth when there's no background or points of reference. when putting on the finish, adding cross-contour lines can help define the forms and develop a sense of depth in the character as well.

if you're worried about perspective, draw out a light and rough perspective grid when you start to lay down a ground plane, and then tie your character to it. if you're uncomfortable with perspective, do studies of simple shapes in different positions and eye levels on a grid until you can manipulate them freely from imagination. your drawing looks like you went straight to the outline right away without any forethought or underdrawing, which is a dangerous way to work!

i'm not great when it comes to things that aren't human, so my anatomy might look little wonky here, but i hope this helps in some way!

Values could use some work to better direct the eye. From the thumbnail I couldn't even tell what I was looking at, which is usually a sign that you need to take more care towards establishing and separating your largest value shapes.
