all your art is done with mspaint
why?
i mean the thumbnails look good and you have decent art but the binary tools ruin it. use programs that have tools with anti-aliasing, and that you can blend.

Started this tonight, about 2 hours in at this point (I'm very slow because I try to learn to "feel" the form still).

Do you guys have remarks about general issues that need fixing first? (btw, the hands aren't in yet because I haven't decided what I want them to do at this point. I'm not planning to hide them)

My main problem right now is that I've never painted anything further than that point and have no clue about how to go on from this point... Do you focus on one area and detail it out 100% or is there some intermediate step before? Also, should I bring color in before the detailing or afterwards?

I'm sorry, I'm a huge noob at this, but I'm grateful for all advice!

Thanks a lot in advance!

you should have probably decided what to do with the hands before getting this far.

also i THINK the nose should protrude upwards a bit more at the angle the head is at unless her nose is really flat but you may want to take that with a grain of salt since i'm still learning about this myself.

lol. not even sure if you are doing a parody of retarded /ic/ critiques, or if you are doing a retarded /ic/ critique.

a flame above the head is a symbol of enlightment in alot of cultures.

bonus info: there was some spanish nobleman in early peru who comissioned some guys to do a sculpture of him for his mansion. he told them he wanted a little flame ontop of his head. flame is 'llama' in spanish. however peruvians also have the animal called llama, which the spanish don't know about. so the sculpters shrugged and gave the guy a little llama sitting ontop of his head.

i believe this is guy

Drawing is mostly good. The tip of the nose and mouth might be a little low and downward facing - doesn't match the rest of the head with the given horizon.

I feel like your color palette is very samey. Maybe it's just me, but I think all of the pieces you've posted here feature the same navy blue background, a dark rich yellow for skin tones, reddish accents (hair in this case and in another portrait).

I don't know if that's just the colors you use in an underpainting, but I'd take more time considering your palette, and really figuring out your direct and ambient light sources. I'd spend time doing color thumbs before settling in on anything.

By vertical measurements, I meant how far away things are when measuring vertically, like using a ruler in a vertical position. If horizontal lines are drawn through those measuring points, you now have something like in OP's picture.

You're saying there was horizontal measuring but no vertical measuring. I'm saying there's vertical measuring, but no horizontal measuring. If you take a ruler, hold it vertical, and measure the spacing between landmarks, you're taking vertical measurements. Vertical measurements are shown with horizontal lines. They can be a point, a short segment, or a long line. Horizontal measurements are shown with vertical lines.

All that's besides the point because I'm just rambling about semantics.

You also have no idea about the form of that object

Thats why you draw countours instead of forms

Thats why you fail

Now take a simple oblect in real life. Likfe a flash disk or something

Take a pencil

now spend alot of time drawing it as realistic as possible. It may take a day or two(probably not but still a huge amount of time)

Start with a line drawing putting general shapes

Then draw inside countours to understand forms

then paint

if you don't wanna do that get the fuck out of ic becasue you don't wanna learn how to draw obviously

It's up to you, really. You are the one staging tho shot, it's like photography, your goal is the best composition.

I just wanted you to know that it's there. In your case you would be ok if you just eye ball it in favor of best composition. But if one day you will decide to get serious about art you will at least know where to dig.

>>1877642
You guys are missing the point. Sure it wasn't to the scale, but the point is everything matters and all geometry is mathematically describable.

It's just something I went through. I couldn't even understand how far apart should vanishing points on horizon be. And no one explained that, every tutorial just didn't go that deep, even Scott in his gnomon dvd avoided it. But I felt something is different when I move them. Only later I figured it, piece by piece, from different sources, some stuff on my own. And this stuff is not that hard actually. It really bothers me that such information just isn't there, at least not on the surface. So I'm trying to go deep every time someone asks this questions, because hopefully they will remember that there is something underneath and go back to learn it one day.

Kneaded erasers are really great because you can use them to pick up some of the graphite without erasing the area in question away completely.

I'd suggest giving these exercises a try, they really helped me to get nicer lines.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

Also always try to draw from your shoulder or elbow and not your wrist - that helps both with cleaner linework as well as putting less strain on your wrist, but might take some time getting used to.
Lastly, a lot of beginners hold their pen/pencil too tightly, so try to avoid that. It doesn't actually give you more control and can be bad for your hand/wrist.

Your horizon is very high, so there's no sense of scale. Its too late at this stage to change that without a lot of work, so I would suggest moving the environment fogging closer to the foreground and being more mindful of where you place details. theres no scale or perspective, because the picture creates no opportunity for it. Don't design around your weaknesses, confront them, create environments with plausible architecture and learn perspective.

>> No.1878448

Stiff figure, almost no perspective. I wouldnt go with a purple since it shows off that hes a noble. Your color palette, the red, purple and yellow are not organized so they look childish. ( I recommend to practise without color picker some pcitures from a film or animation.). Same material everywhere, the Design is also nothing new. Oh and his proportion are.. ( eg. hands too small). Also a tip for his gesture ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aOyLC0XhrY&list=UUaodMS2WS_cye2WmoC90Meg)), look how daarken made this figure standing pose.

Whatever you do, I wouldn't do too much. Don't want to drag the compositon down into a corner. If you had to add something, I'd put like dead leaves, some on the snow, others almost buried in it, etc. And maybe a patch of mud or two. And just get everything to look a little wet, like maybe the snow was there for a few days and is beginning to melt, so around the edges where it goes into mud or grass the snow can look more porous.

As for me, drawing a late Halloween thing because whatever.
