For resources, there's:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/
Gurney's Color and Light *most of the information there is found on his blog

As for tips that have helped me:
1. Learn to first paint in 'monochrome'. If you were using traditional paints, you would make your palette from white, black, a warm red, and a cool red for example. Focus on color temperature changes.

2. For making a warm color cooler, you can shift it's hue but more important you can also pull it closer to gray. Grays appear cool next to warm colors, and cool next to warm colors. Don't omit your grays, and they'll make your saturated colors pop without needing to go too rich.

3. Pay attention to the qualities of your direct and ambient light sources. Are they warm or cool? How intense are they? Is there a lot of falloff in brightness?

4. Paint a lot of still lifes with different lighting conditions. Stick with simple forms (apples, mugs, vases, etc). There's a lot of color information that's either lost in photos, or is harder to pinpoint the source of these color shifts.

5. When painting from life or a photo, establish one of your largest color shapes accurately (this is often the background). With it you now have a point of comparison for all of your other colors (how does the hue compare, what about saturation and value?). Colors only make sense in the context of the surrounding colors. As long as the relationships between colors is correct, it will look correct. This is how you can paint something in high or low key and have it still look right.

6. If a color seems off, try to get it to be the correct value. Then check the temperature.

Grain of salt for everything though. That's just what's helped me so far.

Thank you for the input. You're right about the nose and mouth, but the general shape of the skull I'm actually quite happy with. I personally find it a good mix between orc and human. As for the neck muscles, they were only visible on that side in the reference I used (although I amplified them quite a bit). And his beard covers the area where it should be, anyway.

Again, thank's for the input, I appreciate it.

It seems like the underlying issue is the lack of fundamental portrait painting skills which is accompanied by overrendering. The head lacks form and structure and though the rendering at certain parts is nice it doesn't have the underlying foundations to back it up.

For the question of with or without lines? The lines dont really add anyting so probably without, though personally I'd just scrap it and re-draw

Aight so lookin good mostly except I can see you've redone the face a couple of times in an attempt to conform to an anime style that you don't really understand yet. Unless she is actually a doll, and unless her eyes are actually been stuck on to a cotton wool face then that deadpan expression is not cutting it right now.

Keep in mind that the major planes of the forehead and the brow ridge still define a) the silhouette of her head and b) occlude the tops of the eyes at most angles where the camera is above the eyeline. She could use a more protruding brow line, and while you're at it give her nose a bridge even if you just imply it. don't think that because it's a simplified style that certain shapes - the cylinder of the mouth or the box of the forehead or the protrusion of the cheekbones - aren't there. I refer you to the work of yoshiyuki sadamoto as a reference of a style of anime that can simplify but still maintain an element of '3D' spatial drawing.

Where your texture overlay repeats looks pretty bad, as it looks like scan lines. Overall it feels like there's too much emphasis on textures, and not enough on modeling forms properly. The owl feet for example are poorly handled, and a lot of your edges are either too soft or too hard.

Aside from the larger owl's head, the thumbnail does read well, so that's good. Spend time looking at more bird references to fill in your gaps in anatomical knowledge. I'm also pretty sure that most birds (owls included) don't have eyelashes, but I could be mistaken.

overtextured and a lot of unnecessary fantsy pantsy visual stuff, it looks like photobash instead of real paiting in this state

i had the problem that i would try 100 textures on my paiting and choose the one that matched really (and key word - LUCKILY) nice and subconciously i thought this lucky texture would cover my light and value problems with nice and "professional" visual effect that it adds. That was obviously huge mistake - remember that texture should be cherry on cake, not the base of piece

im not hating by any means. Actually - your image is striking visualy and its the one that catched my eyes when i was scrolling thu topic. So you obviously have skill. Just develop this skill, render more, draw more, and try to create visual effects by yourself, attacking to textures only will slow your leveling

there is a rule: when you can pait something that looks cool without texture, then you can use them

I have a lot of trouble sitting down and spending hours detailing/finishing my paintings so I'm trying to force myself to do that...

Since detailing is so tedious, my habit is to abandon the painting after 1 - 2 hours of work, but I know that's a horrible habit.

Pic is ~1.5 hours of work and I just don't know where to go next. I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to add details, but they just end up looking sloppy.

Any advice on how I can get better at detailing and polishing once I lay things out?

I'm not sure what I'm looking at or what it's supposed to be. The forest and the path are pretty well defined. The foot looks like a flat board with a peg sticking out of it. The right leg is practically nonexistent, and the torso is huge compared to everything else. I'm not sure if there's a head or even a neck, as it's just a thumb sticking out of the shoulders. The location of the thumb on the hand holding the rose makes it appear as if the hand is attached backwards, even though the elbow says otherwise. The lack of any markings on the back delineating the spine or neck/back muscles makes it even harder to tell what i'm supposed to be looking at.

But the forest and high contrast shadows are excellent. They're missing from the figure in the middle though - no cast shadows on the ground.

The eyes are looking outwards in two separate directions, like a lizard. You need to think more about where the eyes are looking and how far away that object is. The unfocused gaze and blank expression is all too common in your portraits, and are a major contributor to that uncanny feeling. Try flipping the image if you don't see it.

You need to give your eyes a better feeling of intent, and purpose - like there's a mind behind them and not some hollow human-shaped manikin.

Also, remember that the pupil and iris should only be circular if they're pointing at the viewer. As they turn away they become more and more eliptical. Link related:

Dont want to make a new thread so ill ask here. Guys how do you paint landscapes in traditional media? Its hell of a torchure to me. Here 2 weeks old piece i drew to show my 'notlandscape' level atm. But when it comes to landscapes i have no idea how to make em look good. All they look like blurry non painterly boring pieces of shit. Especially when there is no direct sunlight in it. How the hell im supposed to paint grass for example? Am i supposed to use pallette knifes and shit like Bob Ross? Hella confusing

>> No.1875176

>>1875169
Why not try a few studies after master landscape artists? Take what you learn from there and try to apply that to your own plein air paintings. Keep in mind that it's hard to paint a beautiful landscape if you aren't moved by it in some way. Try to perceive what you're feeling in the environment and the moment, and try to translate that into your painting.

I'm sure there are at least a few great books on painting landscapes, but I don't know of them personally.

Good idea about copying landscape artists. Thank you. Though i am still not sure how i would manage to achieve decent level of detalisation. Because its different from painting still lifes. For example theres tons of details in grass and leaves that confuses me, also in wood buildings. Its like im supposed to paint real objects in abstract way/ But yeah thats probly what i have to pay attention for during copying.

you know how you paint faces hands and feet more specifically? try to find a landscape that has a clearly defined "face" whether it be a tree or a house. something detailed enough for you to put work into, while you can paint the background lightly and expressively, as you would with the rest of the body on a figure.

otherwise I'd suggest doing a drawing in landscape very specifically, to find out exactly what the best painting you have to offer would look like. push yourself to your limit even if it's for one drawing, just so you know where your limit is. Your limit in landscape is a bit different than your limit in figure drawing.

pic related, but this was a quick one. the front of the house was the "face" while the rest kind of falls by the wayside and just loosely defines the rest of the landscape

I like it. Try to keep your neck lengths consistent, the girl on the right has a much longer neck than the boy on the left. Also, his hair is a bit flat, probably because of the light outline running across the edge, and the lack of definition where it meets his face.

>> No.1875245

i never draw hair either, but one thing i read all over the web is to treat hair as a mass, or a composition of masses instead of individual hairs (hair ?) or strands

think of animu style hair: often parallel strands are combined - then just combine more hair to one "mass" and make it follow the form of the head or whatever style is needed. but avoid flatness or else you get anime hair again
