Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1867402

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

i know you can do it mikufag
study more about anatomy, that arm is wrong and the shape of the ribcage too.
i think you even reference it, but if you dont understand the structure underneath, it shows.
you have chose colors pretty close in value so it doesnt really define form. Besides the lines you make doesnt help either.
if the lightsource is the sun there should be even more contrast
And the cloud is not lighted with the same lightsource of the character
it doesnt help with the composition either, if you ever thought about it
i would recommend getting a lot of mileage at drawing first before painting. Study anatomy and lighting and go over greyscale
but keep it up mikufag, i think we even started around the same time man!

The balloons getter bluer in the distance is good, but the colors in the foreground are very saturated, try to reserve such colors for the focus of your picture and tone the rest down. Do you all agree with the "use someone else's style until it finally becomes a monster of your own"? I've been drawing in the Danganronpa art style lately to where I can freehand it pretty well in my opinion.

>I have hard times with hands though.
One of the drawbacks in drawing on someone's style. You can't really adjust anything (be it hands, feet, facial expression, etc) FREELY because you are drawing under someone else's interpretation of anatomy/still life/etc.

>> No.1873233

>>1873227
I'll add though. If you actually understand how the artist's style was done(construction side), or should I say you already have a grasp of fundamentals, then I think it could not be bad.

But in your case I think you should go on study fundamentals first. Not bad to draw someone's style for fun but to improve go loomis or something or how to draw manga whatever suits you.

The proper way to shoot accurately while crouching, especially with a heavy gun like that, is to place your ass and most of your weight on your back heel, lean forward a little bit for balance, and place your elbow on your knee.

That pose could work as long as he'd place his left elbow on his knee for support, but placing most of your weight on your back heel is the steadiest.

I'll try drawing skulls tomorrow and look into neck anatomy/construction. I kinda struggled placing the neck lines properly

I think I have (anime) eyes down to a level I'm satisfied with atm, I didn't focus on them here because I wanted to focus on head shape

but I'll eventually study realism

After all that fundies talk last thread I got some pix to study. Trying a new thing, here is my plan:
> do some studies first
> redraw animation frames as a baseline to see if I learned anything
> since the frames are heavily simplified, it'll be a good opportunity to test what I've learned with a "semi-reference"

Goal:
> improve the original frame referenced

I was referencing the poses too hard (ex: middle 8, left 10) and I got some bad anatomy. Also, I deleted the pants since they were interfering with my studies. I need to tune my algorithm a bit, but I think there is a middle ground where I can train myself...

left:
1) hand cuteness ^_^
2) the torso was too long, so the redline matches that but is bigger/longer everywhere else. eg. head and legs.
3) symmetrical limb posing are boring in general

right:
1) popped the torso out a bit more, but especially note that the ribcage points away from the viewer so the bunny suit line curves the other way
2) again, torso much too long compared to legs. legs are sexy!
3) be careful to attach the neck so it looks symmetrical!

Well the problem with chicken scratching isn't so much that your lines aren't perfectly clean, it's more that it means you're likely drawing from your wrist instead of your shoulder or elbow. That not only makes a lot of things (like long lines) harder to draw but also puts a lot of strain on the wrist and can lead to injuries. I mean you'd have to draw A LOT for that to happen, but better safe than sorry right?

Try stuff like the exercises in this video while trying to draw from your elbow or shoulder. Also make sure not to grap the pen too hard, that is bad for your hand as well.

also, by placing her hair between her wings, you will give it a sense that their wings are transparent, just like you did with her back

add some details to the mushroom, rib and torso lines to her as well as nipples and toes and it would look great pal

Your colors look very muddy and lifeless, especially the skin. Unless that was your attention I'd recommend to avoid shading with black.

The red on her pants is also drawing the viewer's eye to it a lot because the rest is so monochrome. I'd recommend adding some color to her head/face or ditching the red stripe.

since you seem to have good taste there are a couple of other artists i've taken notice of that might be relevant to your interests:

- tsutomu nihei. the guy isn't actually that good at drawing people but his designs look cool as fuck. plus he studied architecture so his buildings and shit look sweet

- kentarou miura, but only after a certain time period. his art in the first few volumes of berserk was kind of wonky and generic but around volume 14 or so he starts becoming pretty good and nowadays he makes some of the most polished art in the industry.

- Shinichi Sakamoto. Look up his work on "Innocent". Proceed to drool at japanese master race comic draftsmanship.

- Tsutomu Takahashi. Look up his work on Sidooh, Hito Hitori Futari, and Skyhigh. The guy is super fucking underrated.

- Inio Asano. His visual storytelling and art is near master level and he's only like 31.

- Masakazu Katsura.

- Boichi (the only thing i don't care for is his sameface bishoujo fixation but other than that he is pretty skilled)

these are primarily the guys i would look up to/study/respect.

Is a safe guess by the looks of it but that ain't the case. Actually the Demons I want to do are going to be Judeo-Christian and Celtic inspired... Originally I wanted to put Journey to the West inspired monsters but then I realized that I don't know much about it, so I'll stick to what I know (Celtic mythology and Dante's Inferno and the like). Same for setting and such, it's going to be set in LA actually. And the name 'Tokki' is korean for 'Bunny' that's why she has those big bunny-ear like headpiece... Like you said 'be inspired by the style' that's one thing, and 'try a little bit' the reason I don't want to go straight out to japanese folklore with this stuff. I also think that would be too weeby

I don't see jarring asymmetries, you've probably just looked at it for too long. That said, I don't think it's very appealing stylistically speaking. You don't quite have the anatomical knowledge yet to pull off the semi-realistic thing all that well, but you don't seem to have practiced stylization much either. That said, it's very hard to give you helpful pointers in that area without knowing what kind of style you want to achieve.

On a more general level two things you could do to improve these relatively quickly would be

1. more contrast - aside from some characters having darker hair the shading is very flat and almost everything is midtones. At least some areas should have stronger shadows, like the neck. (Judging by the lines you put in that area you had the right idea, but a darker value would look much better considering that you haven't used hatching anywhere else.)

2. Study ears.

Your colors are on the dull side as well, but color is sort of a complicated topic so that might not be the first thing to look into for a quick fix.
Skintones have a lot of subtle color shifts, like ears being more reddish or mens' jaws often taking on a slightly blueish hue because of the stubble (even if it's not really visible yet otherwise).
The color of highlights is influenced by the color(s) of the lightsource(s) and the color of the shadows by the character's surroundings.

Well I don't know anything of your story, but I don't really get a sense of what you just said in that cover and part of a cover is to sell your shit. When I see it I see just another weabo. >> No.1875617

A very simple trick to make your story sound much more interesting is to not use the word demon or use names of actual mythological creatures. Just change them and your story will instantly seem less clichee.

As for the cover, I have to agree with the other anon that it doesn't sell the premise too well, either include a cool monster that brings across the whole celtic or christanity inspired thing, or make it more fanservicey if that's the direction you want to take your comic in (or both).
Also, please don't do that red and green shit around the line work, it's distracting and makes it hard to look at the image properly.

Don't use them. "Demon Hunter" just sounds very generic, even if they are demons I would choose a more creative title.

There is a bit more leeway for names of specific creatures but I'd still avoid them because it'll make you seem more creative to people who don't know much about mythology and you won't have to deal with demon nerds who'll try to correct you on irrelevant shit that you intentionally changed to suit your story better.

look at chickenoppailoli or other artists. you can't really call all their influences, can you? it's impossible to become a carbon copy of another artist anyway.

I'm starting up a comic and this is the first page of it. I'm nowhere near perfect, but I was hoping to use the comic to practice my anatomy (amongst other things). What can I improve on, change, etc. etc.

Everything seems to be ok, but if you look closely, you can spot a nigger character
If little mistakes like this would be removed, everything will look nice
