Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1848844

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Different anon here. If your goal is to draw stylized stuff then it doesn't hurt to work on it on the side as long as you apply what you've learnt.

But don't build or dedicate yourself to one particular style, thats stupid. Look for and take in a whole bunch of influences, find what you like, what you don't etc.

Another different anon here, getting good at drawing is more about mileage than anything, especially in the beginning, so just draw a ton - which is easier if you do something you enjoy and have fun doing.
You get better at something much more quickly if you practice it properly, but the worst thing you can do is not to draw enough, so don't attempt to learn drawing in a way you hate.

Ideally you should practice a mix of basics and stylization.

You just never seem to learn. You got good shit going on but it almost seems hampered by your own guidelines, like continuously drawing the facial features (seemingly) on the same plane and messed up perspective because you religiously follow guidelines that aren't correct in the first place.

Every time it's a thing about the faces, about the perspective yadda yadda. It's hard to think you're making much progress at all.

look at how other people draw hands (or anything else for that matter) and the steps they go through to achieve the results that they do (no need to reinvent the wheel). then apply this knowledge to your own drawings and modify the process as needed to get a style that you desire. also it helps to have a sample of what you are trying to draw to study from, in this case you were probably born with two perfectly good subjects of your own.

paint over from last thread

here some tips.
-miku's twin tails are her signature trait. give them more attention. your's are lacking the twisting ribbon like effect they should have
-the hair color is too similar to the back ground color in your original picture.
-your shading is amorphous because the the brush you are using has too soft of an edge. Soft edges can look great but they need to be counter balanced by hard ones.
-you drew the contour of her face wrong for this angle and her mouth is drawn too far back. look a anime figures for reference. also try and Avoid the slack jawed tim buckley facial expression.

I could go on on how people all around the world, especially amerifats, love mexicans just for being mexicans, they find this place and it's culture so cool that I can't completely understand it, and also, you need mexicans to do the works the black and yellow men won't do anymore, but we're about to become as based as them so enjoy pepe the plumber while you still can.

I don't really care to talk more about it.

>Also, where did you went? I'll let you know that there's a huge cultural gap between states.

Ah your English could use some help, I like you so here is how I would phrase it.

When talking to someone and you are asking where they went to you say "Also, where did you go?", only when referencing to other people or objects should you end with a 'went'.

It would go like this "Did you see where he went?" but "Where did he go?" works too.

"I'll let you know" Should be "I'll have you know" , this is because you are not giving the other person a choice in the matter so it is "I'll let you run on the track from 5-6 every day" vs "I'll have you running the the track everyday!"

Oh and countrys and states are uppercase but you probably knew that.

I think it's unrealistic to expect someone to NEVER draw for fun or enjoyment until their basics are down. You don't learn how to cook by only learning your basics first. You cook a few dishes inbetween and brush up on what you could do better.

Your styleized drawings should be used as a way of tracking your progress in your studies.

By this line of logic, no one should draw stylied, ever, because no one is ever done learning.

Just don't let the stylized drawing outnumber the basics when you need practice on something. Don't do your studies in a style, do them true to life. But if you feel like doing a fun picture of a faggy catgirl or what the fuck ever, go for it, just don't expect it to be a masterpiece if you're not done with your basics.

Unless you're tryng to draw a faceless person, why would you start the coloring and lineart without a face?

Even if they are meant to be faceless, the skin should still sit over the bones (think of Slenderman, for example. For the most part, he isn't just a smooth block for a head, he's still got facial structure)

The arm don't match at all and the right (Our right not her right) elbow is tapering inwards too much.
Her hips are busted and the torso and hips are both oriented in different direcctions rather than just her torso/body twisting as it should.

The left leg doesn't connect properly to that foot (make sure when you sketch you draw the whole leg, even what would be hidden behind the right leg) and the right leg i all twisted. Unless she was wearing toe shoes (ballet slippers) it isn't possible to stand on the tips of your toes like that, she would actually be standing partially on the front part of her foot and her toes.

The fingers on the hands are just kinda broken.

The tits look great though. I'm surprised the only thing not fully fucked on this is the one part of female anatomy everyone fucks up horrifically. Cept her nipples look kinda like M&Ms and may not be centered properly but that depends on how much detail you like in your nipples i guess.

As for the lineart, I like the way you've done the lineart, and the coloring looks decent for very basic coloring and the pallette is pleasant as well considering it's just skin and hair.

Quickie redline to sorta highlight what I mean. I'm not fab at anatomy but those are the glaring errors I see. The box on the right I drew is what your drawing is doing with her spine.

what is the point of you drawing layers upon layers starting from the bone structure, if you're not studying anything/applying any knowledge? It's like you've drawn 4 different drawings, not taking anything from the previous one. The bone structure wasn't that bad, but it got worse as you went on. The finished drawing looks like you just drew a character in 5 mins on a separate sheet of paper. Don't do unnecessary things and study.

As a female who has noticed immediately when the straps of my bathing suit came untied beforre the suit even began to fall I can say that her reaction to it slipping is fine.

When you have weight on your chest being supported, you kind of notice the second that support is gone and in a halter top that supports EVERYThING. So yeah, considering her nips are about to be exposed bitch is right to be freaking a little.

Reaction time isn't always the same despite feeling it come undone too so it's still realistic for it to fall (if you were to draw another shot of it) most of the way off before being noticed, especially in cartoons/anime where a "comedic delay' can be given.

If she lets it fall all the way off, not so realistic if she noticed it that early, but fine for a pervy pic.

I tried, hopefully this gives you some insight. another anon was on about how the dude lying down kind of occupies space wrong, but I think the whole image has this problem. It looks like you started with the little guy but kept adding characters around with no planning or placement involved. I suggest you start thinking about how forms occupy space. There's four largeish men gathered around him, but they're packed in too tight,
Another thing is their faces/heads. They're just flat out the wrong shape, to the point where the angles of their heads are indiscernible. ie their eyes are looking down but their heads are not facing downward. The boy in the middle is the best figure you've got, I just kind of made his clothes look more like he's being pulled on/ groped/ touched. As people have said the figures lack dimension, I'd study standing positions, specifically how the legs work with the pelvis and shift weight from one to another.

Also I apologize in advance, I don't fucking know how to draw hands.

We have a dedicated shitposter, that's a biggie, the cesspool renovates itself, we have new people posting now, people that haven't even read the sticky, thus, the average skill level always remains low; we have people that view legit critique as pretentious or offensive, we have people that don't know shit giving advice, and we even have people purposefully ignoring the material on the sticky while stroking their egos between themselves.

You gotta let go man, it doesn't matter how much time you further spend on it, your own inhabilities won't let you reach a significant change in quality, unless it's a comission or something really important, you should've done at least one of these sketches every day since then, quantity of work is more important than quality of, also, some people think it's an obvious given , but I cannot stress how important it is to do studies, that's why you can't get the right hand and the balance to work out, because you don't have that info. on your head yet, you gotta do studies everyday on the subjects you feel weaker (life drawing, gesture drawing, perspective et.al).

Seriously, just produce some reference, fix what you can, paint if you want and move on as quickly as you can.

A typical beginner's mistake is the so called chicken scratch, also known as a hairy line. This is going over your lines multiple times.

Well, don't.

Use clean lines. Knowing where and how to draw your line is part of your basic drawing knowledge. Practice drawing long, steady lines with confidence. If unsure about your drawing, think about your next line placement instead of wildly guessing.

I am just quoting the beginner sticky here but you are correct, sketches can or should show where things go, but if you yourself have no idea and are indecisive, the sketch won't help you with anything.

>uh muh but I wanna just draw animoo and no realism

Even if you want to focus on drawing animu you need at least some basic knowledge about the human body.

I mean you could just go practicing and redraw the same shit over and over util you may or may not improve but with this method it is very likely that your characters will still look like fucking shit after 2 years of constant drawing (>>>/deviantart/)

I mean your sketch is not utterly terrible but every beginner could come up with what you posted by just 'searching' for the right lines.

tl;dr use long decisive lines, think where the line has to go before drawing it, go through some anatomy/beginner book from the sticky, it might take some time to get through them but it'll be well worth, even if your focus is animay waifus

>> No.1856888

I don't just want to draw anime, obviously. I've only just started trying it out. Usually when I sketch i chicken scratch, and when I do final lines I draw normally. I did these quite quickly and I think that's why it looks so messy. I went though most of the sticky already. I trained myself to use my whole arm while I draw, but that didn't top my chicken scratching (though inking feels much more natural). Thanks for the input. Do you think I should stop sketching this style and work on lines more? Work on anatomy more? I have completed 4 books so far which main focus was anatomy/figure drawing

To elaborate a little bit on what this anon said about clean line work is something that I struggled with until I realized something and that is clean, confident lines are the product of two things.

First is how confident you are with your utensil and making a mark. Whatever medium you are using should be an extension of yourself starting from your shoulder all the way down to your fingers, this comes with a lot of mileage and just drawing a whole hell of a lot. There are a plethora of exercises you can do if you look up improving line confidence.

Secondly is how confident you are in your forms and what it is you actually are trying to draw. You can be great at making marks but it doesn't mean much when you're not entirely sure where those marks should go. Most beginners have scratchy lines because they try to feel out their forms by going over edges and contours multiple times because they're having difficulty visualizing them. Learning and applying perspective will help you immensely and if you grind it out now it will pay off massive dividends in the future. Look into RapidViz, it's the book that really helped me along the way with this.

Getting clean and confident line work is a continuous process but it will make your life much, much easier and your work will look much nicer because of it.

Not him , but you shouldn't draw hairy lines ever, not even when "sketching", just draw with your shoulder, unless you want some carpal tunnel mane.
>Work on anatomy more?
Everyone works on all fundamentals for ever, and all fundamentals rely on eachother to function in succesful displays of draftsmanship, or in other words, to do good drawings you need to be good on all fundamentals.
So when you feel it's time for a change, shuffle your usual subjects and focus on the new ones for a while, for example, now you could delve into perspective, form and color, or whatever catches your attention, just remember, you gotta master all of them, so you'll find yourself revisiting and relearning the stuff you previously studied.

indeed, I just started using a tablet a few days ago so shit is gnarly. i don't know anything about adjusting sensitivity or brushes or whatever, this is all basically default PS. as for the proportions, are you referring to his smallish head? don't freak out, I draw from life/images all the time but I enjoy challenging myself with brain-only exercises like these. it is such fun! as for the flatness, I kinda prefer unshaded images but sure, yes. as proof that I haven't just been drawing gay anime crap here is a sketch I did back in Italy, I dunno, in 2011 maybe?

Avoiding the chicken lines might seem hard in the beginning and won't just happen overnight if you got very used to it but in long term it will benefit your drawing and confidence, even when sketching something.

Its great that you've already worked through 4 books, at the latest this is where your grinding starts, as pointed out by another anon, you will never ever stop learning. Even if you have covered topic x in one book, you can always read another book about the same subject by another author and still learn a few new tips and tricks.

On what you should do next: I haven't seen anything but heads yet, so maybe get into figure drawing in combination with quickposes.com and practice those. Or anything that you are super uncomfortable with. Fight with it and draw it 1000x times until you love drawing hands or feet for instance if those are subjects that you might struggle with.

One last piece of advice that I was going to say in my first response is that even when drawing anime/manga and drawing something you really love: Never draw without reference, especially not as beginner. Its a huge misconception with this alternative stylization that people think just because it isn't "real" you don't need no reference and you HAVE to come up with it from pure imagination/fantasy.
If you come up with an idea go and use real life references and just apply everything you see to your own drawing. There isn't a pose that you could not find references for nowadays..

I've just found out about this place and thought I could get some critique with a piece I've been working on lately. Apart from the obvious chicken lines, which I want to fix, how does it look in general? I don't usually do alot of colouring, so I haven't practiced alot in that. Thanks in advance.

I like how SeaLoud came out so far. But as for Tifa because she is in focus: neck lines don't make sense, shoulders, breast lines unnecessary (where the top starts), ear mispositioned, face elements too symbolic. I realzie we are in and alternate stylization thread but you probably drew the eyes from imagination resulting in those fishy from eyes; also mouth position is off. Consider looking for a real life reference for her pose , I'm sure you'll be able to find dozens of examples in that position. I wouldn't bother drawing single lines of hair, especially not with the aimed style. Think of hair as large chunks that belong together as you partly already, tho her hair could need some more physics and dynamics.

The coloring looks kind of muddy, try avoiding the blur tool too much or even at all. But I can't really give much advice regarding that subject.

All in all both characters need some more anatomy and in order to clean up the chicken scratch and finalize the drawing, I'd suggest you try out some sort of ink pen (slightly bigger than the pen tool you used for the sketch) and redraw the complete line art with long and confident lines. Take your time with the lines and also try not abusing CTRL+Z too often, instead focus more. Even when drawing your own ideas use references, not necessarily real life but maybe also from other skilled artists, it'll help you improve much faster.

The permenancy of traditional is getting realllllly annoying. Sometimes I want to try a different BG, or some random color with the eyes, but obviously I can't undo - so lame.

Considering going digital, but I really hate sitting at the computer... I'm already in front of a monitor for 8 hrs at work...

Thanks alot for your help. Alot of what you said was simple, I should have seen alot of it myself really, but I suppose sometimes you need an outside eye.
So I've done a quick fix of her head/shoulder area....lowered the ear, moved the mouth slightly and re-did eyes and shoulders so they're not so predominant. I'm more happy with it now, so thanks for that.

I'll re-do all the lines eventually, but when I try a larger brush to go for clean, long smooth lines, I can never seem to get the nice look I want. Can anyone suggest a brush/brush setting that gives good results? Thanks.

yeah, I definitely second the comment in >>1856940 about the boob lines, mostly cuz I see this all the time in developing artists (and of course, did this, at some point). to be specific, the outlines of her breasts on her shirt are far too extensive/detailed for the article of clothing, even if you want it to look tight. look, even miley's tits can't find a way to pop through a similar garment. some of her other anatomical detailing, like the lines around her knees seem off too. and I'd just erase her 'two-pack' ab line, especially considering the pose she's in, which would tend to fold her torso a bit anyways. I don't want to come off as mean here (this community is pretty judgmental already, I got a lotta heat myself today) so I wanna say I'm enjoying all the detailing you've done on the armor, it seems like it is one of your strong suits. that said, she feels kinda like an entirely different thing (obviously I'm ignoring coloring here) that is not part of a whole image, since the level of clothing detail on her is so minimal by comparison. I'd try to balance the two by adding some 'busy-ness' to her figure, if not in her clothes then in a prop or something.

ok I'm going to try this again, hopefully this time without ensuing brutality. which I was somewhat prepared for, but not really (i'm fresh as fuck around these parts, can you tell?). all this crap is just pencil unfortunately, but certainly fits the bill as stylized. issues that are already apparent to me 1) this picture is super boring, is she going to church or what 2) who broke her fucking finger, 3) dead glassy eyes, prob too much church. Not gonna finish this but I like the details of her face.

Cheers for your input. I've tinkered it a little again, changed a few bits, erased some lines like you said.
I had been debating whether to complete her costume (incase you're unaware, the character is Tifa from final fantasy7), so after what you said about her being quite minimal in comparison, I put the rest of her stuff in - gloves, bracers and better boots.

I'm not fully happy with the skin colour yet, or the actual lines, but this is where I'm at so far on her...

Who says we aren't?

Anyway, the lower portion of the neck is really thin, in combination with the tight neck of the tee he looks a bit strangled.
The vest looks odd to me as well, it looks like it should be relatively thick due to being quilted (and it does in fact seem to have some volume to it on one armhole), but it looks pretty flat/thin in most areas.

I do like your style, maybe next time you're working on something longer post some steps in between so we can give you critique you can actually use to improve the picture? Or do you intend to work more on this one?

Face is still really unappealing. Shading is muddy, the hairline is far too high up, and the lips look really symbol drawn. There's more but I can't really tell; she just looks plain ugly. Making the lines more subtle might be useful, because the more detail you pen in the older she'll look.

Also like >>1856959 said, boobs don't make lines. Clothing does not stick like a leotard. And boobs also start hanging only at the bottom bit where they droop down from the chest, so there really shouldn't be any real shading at the top where the pecs are just starting; otherwise it looks like she's having a major case of old woman's sag.

I remember that someone suggested me that stylized eyes should be bigger in a vertical sense instead of an horizontal one because in the latter you risk making the face too wide and messing up its proportions.

I feel you. Then again, having to draw things several times to try stuff forces you to draw more - at least it did for me, I think I actually really benefitted from it in the long run.

That said, there is no reason you can't do both, just scan your inks (or take a good picture of them I guess) and either try color schemes on the computer before you dive into markers or just marker your image and then try digital variations if you don't like your first attempt.

Alternatively you could get a light box if you want to stay all traditional, but obviously that only saves you some time because you still wouldn't be able to swap out only the eyecolor.

Increasing the eye size vertically messes with the cheekbone area. There is no way to draw larger eyes without influencing other facial proportions as well, so which one someone choses just comes down to personal preference.

(Not OP btw)

To be fair, I've been working in my sketchbook much more than on that drawing. I'd -like- it to be good, but I should just drop it, I guess. Usually I don't have too many issues with previous drawings, but this one is a train wreck. Shit sucks.

Thank you so very much! I'll consider all of what you guys said ^^ I really like drawing, and there's someone I want to impress, too. People on here say they hate practicing something, or hate drawing something because it feels like a chore. I think that's really sad and I hope that never happens to anyone who really loved drawing to begin with.

Also, I usually do a page of gesteres a day, one or two figures, and then some manga/cartoon picture. I think I will focus on lots more of what I struggle with instead of what I already got better at, but I'll still practice it.

One more thing:

I know you guys (all of ic) talk about how chicken scratching is really bad and some people don't really care about it, but I think it's really cool that you guys look out for each other, since drawing like that every day can hurt you for a longggg timmmee. At lots of times there are fights here, but I really like that everyone looks out for each other in that way, too! ^^
