Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1842359

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

i like the binary tool usage.

the soft edges of your shadows are kind of unappealing when used en masse. throw some hard edges in and it might look better.

facial construction is a little off, the nose is flat (I think). either way it's just a little wonky.

isn't it weird that we find baby animals cuter than babies. i mean a kitten is soo much cuter than a baby the baby doesn't seem cute at all.

out near my place in the country there was a stray cat that i had to shoot. it was a gimpy thing with patches of fur missing which had nothing more on it's mind than fucking my house cat and killing my chickens. but i swear to you that that poor motherfucker was cuter than a human baby.

it's an odd thing, it's the only reason i believe lolicons really aren't pedophiles. those things they jack-off too look more like kittens than babies.

cuteness appreciation has got to be some kind of weird evolutionary biproduct.

There are proportions that give a perception of cute, we may draft the same proportions to be used in our work. All new offspring including animals share a common proportion and we react with emotion and immediately wish to care and nurture.

First off, the maternal instinct to protect young individuals is not a biproduct, just a product of evolution that is completely logical, and not weird at all. It is a surviving trait because it's successful at stopping death. The things that we instinctively react to are fairly universal among greater animals. Animals will protect young. Selective breeding has made household pets into more in line with some facet of attraction to breeders. It is not entirely uncommon to not think babies are that cute, but once you get some estrogen pumping by getting one your emotions tend to change.

so make her head smaller, and adjust the angle of the head, it looks awkward, the way it's hiding the neck.

but it doesn't have anything to do with protecting the young, i shot that cute cat after all.

and it still doesn't explain why a cat is cuter than a baby.

i think we assume it has something to do with parental instinct because it's logical, but the assumption falls apart in the details.

i think, and i hope you can follow my reasoning here (and if you can you're a ninja at following reasoning) it has more to do with cherubs.

If you mean to say that very recent modern human depictions as cherubs even belongs in this conversation i have to question your sanity. Fill pages up with quick 2 minute drawings of anything interesting you see. It doesnt matter if they look bad at first, you have to fail to improve. Draw things that interest you. Color is not the problem. You have highlights everywhere.

Don't just put highlights on every edge. Highlights are a specular (like mirror) reflection.

Pretend there is a mirror tangent to the surface, and imagine if you could see the light source in that mirror. That would be where you place the highlight.

It doesn't matter how long, it's how good of a grasp you have on them. Assuming that you do have a good level, try remembering the knowledge that it takes to create the form and morph it by analyzing the proportions of the art that you aim to draw like. Otherwise, if your fundamentals aren't as strong as you claim, you should practice/analyze more on form. It's good to "feel" the form, or as Vilppu likes to put it, "420 blaze it faggit". Another aspect to consider is varying line weight/quality which also is rooted in the fundamentals.

These are the things I consider for myself very important to study, especially when considering how the medium places a great importance on lines.

For the picture I include, I did my best to implement what I've said, though I'm sorry if my skills can't match up with my advice. As a quick thing to note, consider how I treat the hair as forms (it's more clear if you examine the top of the head). If your heads are good, then don't forget that hair has form too.

Instead of complaining about somebody else's corrections, make your own. Easy to talk shit when you can't get hit.

Don't get me mistaken though, if something's bad then it's fine to call it how it is. However leaving a comment "just shit" is a lazy cop out. This is (/ic/ - Artwork/Critique) not (/ic/ - Artwork/Comments) something I believe this board has had a growing problem with. It's harder to explain why something is off and even harder to demonstrate better. I believe the option that has you drawing more will be the better choice in the end. It's a good indicator of what one must work on and a good challenge to see if you can actually follow your own critique to improve an artwork.

Since when? I certainly didn't posses this ability when I started, and no one I know has either. Developing a critical eye takes time and is not something that you just have or don't have, and certainly not something newbies possess.

you got the slants, make sure to flip your image regularly

best advice I can give is study photo refs to build up your skills, THEN when you wanna go flashy, look at your favorite artists an how they do things an compare those things they do to photo refs an break down how they simplified/abstracted things to create the forms they did. IT IS SO VERY EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you learn the basics first so that you can look at stylized images an be able to tell if they're makin mistakes or not. you don't wanna study the style quirks of something that is making a mistake (at least not without understanding how/why the artist chose to deviate in such a way)

mini tips relevant to what you're goin for at the moment (a head facin straight forward)
- flip it to make sure you ain't got the slants (you got the slants)
- avoid perfect symmetry tho, makes shit look stiff an wack. seriously, mouths are never symmetrical, they don't read properly if they are

reading books really isn't the way to learn to draw
I skimmed loomis back when I first started takin draws seriously an christ did that man draw a lot of unappealing shit, so I just went an studied on my own, an it was all shit until I had a friend who was really good at art told me two things.

1. you gotta make sure what you draw reads, if what you're drawing can't be easily an instantly understood, it's not gonna work (except in very rare cases where you're like intentionally tryin to confused the viewer)

2. everything can be broken down into shapes, an they showed me this by breaking down a drawing of hellboy into like five rectangles an a large D shaped piece for the chest

you do gestures to learn proportions an pose (this is your blocky block phase)

then you do specific detail studies (this is your learnin how shit falls on top of whatever your underlyin structure is)

Perspective comes into play here, but I've understood perspective since 6th grade, it's a lot of simple math an geometry tricks, so I guess I got that out of the way way before I did anything else.

Proper stylization then comes from the understandin an manipulation of these principals.

You can't easily mess with proportions till you know the underlyin ratios you gotta hold so that the drawing still feels right.
You gotta know the underlyin musculature to understand how to properly curve your forms, which lines should cut other lines off (the deltoid/pectoral line onto the arm bein a common mistake many beginners majorly beef on), even with very minimalist styles.

That quote by that guy who draws the really creepy things holds very true. Gotta know the rules so you can break em.

tl;dr, loomis sux, get lucky an have a good art friend give you some simple advice that manages to give you direction in your studies

Last time I tried a Faber-Castell brush pen it was hella awful to work with (because the felt tip couldn't do thin lines anymore after just a few sketches), so if you used something worse until now it's no wonder your inking was bad.
Either concentrate on other aspects first or get some proper inking tools like a Pentel pocket brush or dip nibs (G pens are what Mangaka tend to use).

Pure white tends to flatten things so I'd recommend being careful with them, but colored pencils over marker can work pretty well (to add subtle color variation for example, or even shading), lots of artists do it. I mean it's not really neccessary for you considering the amount of markers you got, but it might be fun to play around with either way.

>Name: Curly Mo

>Age: 22

>Devil Fruit Power: Mass Mass Fruit — The user is able to change the surface mass of an object he is touching. The user has to be touching the object for the effect to work.

>Weapons: Balloons which he inflates and keeps on a string around his neck. He shapes them into various weapons he thinks up on the spot and uses the power of his fruit to make them hit with the force of iron. The balloons are light to his touch which makes him able to swing huge weights without breaking a sweat.

>Bio: His father used to be a mime until he died (or some other sad backstory) — from then on it was Curly’s dream to spread cheer and joy to others across the world.

Information was previously sent to the White House on or around June 2nd with an interest in sharing some useful, pertinent information I've come into
through years of research into the biological effect of dissociative drug application.

Over an extended course of time, the drugs ability to temporary limit the overall use of resources internally has allowed me personally through tissue
stimulation to alter the basic structure of the interior of my sinus cavity. Upon relating this information, with an interest in trying to get across
the legitimacy of this as a medical discovery, I recently attempted to contact the White House, thinking in the circumstances that if the information
was related to someone in a better position to distribute it, some response might occur in the medical community.

Instead I've found that all products containing dextromethorphan in my surrounding area have suddenly had the dextromethorphan removed. This is an
obvious and simplistic verification of the information that has been shared, but rather than instituting some method of distribution to improve
the circumstances for constituents, has resulted in a blockade of an important medical discovery. I urge you to read over and judge for yourselves. While
certain content in the letter expresses personal religious views, the bio information is all solid and tested, and the response taken by the administration
to block the information from distribution is something I take as a personal affront.

I urge you yourselves to attempt to find dextromethorphan containing products, and should you find the dissociative drug absent, question why an
administration would tactically work towards the removal of an important medical substance immediately following a letter (not the first, but clearly
the last) regarding this important discovery.

Letter is shared word for word as sent to the White House website.

Copy saved on date in personal email.

you can play with proportion, stretchin it an shit, but you can't fuck with underlyin anatomy (the ways muscles wrap the skeleton an flex/relax), or else it looks uggo

loomis is terrible at teachin because he takes 20 or so pages to tell you somethin you could learn from a leaflet because he can't stop fuckin writing words. if you don't value your time then I guess this isn't a problem, but if I'm gonna read, I'd rather it be short or enjoyable (honestly, both).

Trig and geometry is about formulas and functions, even though they deal with shapes, you don't need a lick of geometry or trig to understand perspective.

I never really focused on the formulas, but rather the visual representations behind what these numbers meant.
Do I need to know these parts of trig/geometry to understand perspective? Not in the slightest. But it did make it a hell of a lot easier to think about shapes in 3d space.

an I also love soakin in as much knowledge/entertainment/art/whatever as possible, which is why I have a penchant for shorter, more efficient things. nothin against longer things like novels an such, just I can read more short stories in that same amount of time. shorter things also have more room to experiment usually. but I'm gettin away from the point. the more efficient a tutorial/reference material is, the quicker I can take in it's information an move onto somethin else.
