Because of a resent interest in graphic water colour work I'd like to discover more artists that fit the bill.

What I mean is; Work that is (not necessarily watercolor) but is simple in approach and relies on gesture of the lines, color and values rather than any specific detail (though some detail is preferred, don't post rotkho or whatev)

Starting out with based Hiroshi Yoshida

The paintings don't neccesarily have to be gouache and water color I'm just looking for artists who do quite a lot more with their shape design than others

So basically;

Painters who are very good at compression of detail, making things work with very little means, and even if their paintings are complex everything is subordinated to the whole.

The search term that most easily comes to mind is "woodblock print japan"

Lots of cool things can be made with it, you prepare the paint on a wooden block that you then roll over the canvas, some really famous paintings have been made using that technique. Ofcourse you have to make everything fit into layers upon layers (especially things like this)

It's an interesting limitation because it makes it so that they only use 4-5 different colors (otherwise it's too much work to make just one print)

I'm not sure if he would release a download of his art like that. But it would be nice, since he has thousands of images online probably. There are mass downloader programs too, but I don't really know how to use them.

Stanhope alexander Forbes

His seperation of shapes is very clean even in heavily cluttered scenes

>>1818453

You guys have good taste, I'm in love with about 95% of things posted in this thread. This is exactly the type of stuff i want to do, simplicity. Doing a lot with simplest possible means, complexity in simplicity!

they really did use guns like that. I saw one in person at an art museum. They also had a samurai sword with a basket hilt, which was pretty cool. kinda like the sword version of those beautiful prints in this thread.
