Your rendering is very uniform. Everything has the same value jumps even highly reflective materials like the metal shoulder pad (I think?)

Pose is also something I'd look into, try and pick up a broom and hole it like she is now. If you're standing stoicly in the rain I wouldn't hold my heavy spear in such a light handed manner!

Thumb looks great! But there are certain things that pop out when you look at it in higher resolution; Forgetting the awkward hold on the spear, why is her skirt not interacting with her arm? It should press against but they seem quite distanced from one another.

It seems like your making everything up from your head which is a good exercise but how are you going to pull it to become 'real' real? Here's a suggestions based on personal experience (I too have painted girls wearing skirts in the wind~~~) Ok, get a hair drier or any kind of fan and get a skirt (I used a variety of towels) now get your webcam or any camera that can be set to a timer and try to look at the gesture that the cloth takes over your legs when your in wind. Alternatively if you don't have a hair drier get a girl to pose for you (they love to pose for artists, trust me) She can even bring her hair dryer with her. Easy peasy!

Facial structure is weird, her eye is dead on but her face is tilted to the right ~~~ Currently it looks like you enjoyed painting the statue more because it sure has a lot more intricate detail than any other part of the painting.

Hope that helps and wasn't gibberish, go get that there fame <3

with regard to soft and hard edges. generally, especially in pictures with outlines still on them, soft edges should be between quite harmonious shapes. that is to say shapes that don't contrast much.

for example in the background you have very light almost greenish blue parts with a very soft edge leading into a very dark reddish blue. that's too much contrast.

i feel like i'm not expressing myself well. but that's my crit.

i like it overall though, very funky. bit of asymmetry with the eyes though, remember to flip the canvas every now and then.

if you're using photoshop, the warp tool or the liquify tool can fix up annoying problems like that.

here, i just unwonked the eyes a tiny bit (didn't do much i think they're just funny looking eyes) and changed the purply color in the background a tiny bit. you can see how now it's not so in your face and your eye is more focused on the figure, yes?

Well you managed to render most of the general tones. Just make the brush smaller and paint in the details. Who cares if you mess up?

I also wouldn't worry about what you don't know yet, there is always going to to be more to learn. Doing challenging projects like this once in a while are great to bump up your skills and pinpoint things you really need to improve on.

Yeah, this hasn't been all for nothing. Before I even started the painting I typed up like a whole page of my observations, mostly concerning how the light was affecting the objects, rather than only making sure I matched everything stroke for stroke, where the light source was. Also, I think I've gotten better at seeing what colors I was actually looking at, mostly the saturation.

This image shows that, save for two hues (and saving a few more I have yet to put down), all of the colors in this painting are in the lower left quadrant. And yet the painting still looks so colorful and vivid. It's the only real painting I've studied to this degree, so I should use the color dropper (not using it to paint from) on other paintings to see what range they cover, it could be very important in how I see color relationships.

I dunno if you have reference for this or not, but I think my points still stand. I did a quick paintover on things I see wrong with it just using my experience/knowledge.

A few thoughts:
-Avoid pure white backgrounds since they throw off your values
-SIMPLIFY MORE
-Decide if something is in light or shadow since your are making things very muddy
-Get harder edges in there, it is too blurry
-Don't be afraid to go to a near black value in some small key areas, especially occlusion shadows or the shadow side of something with a black local value (like hair)

I'm not sure why anyone wants their artwork to look photographic, to me that defeats the entire purpose of art. Realism is very different from photorealism. You can still achieve realism while simplifying a great deal, take a look at Sargent or Zorn.

The original has a lot of messy brush strokes that doesn't work. Paintover anon meant to simplify more so the strokes so it would better describe the form.

Have you not been reading your Loomis, anon.

I could only see the argument for "every detail has a purpose" in a master painting, certainly not in a photograph. A painter has much more control over what is included and what is omitted than a photographer.

You shouldn't slavishly copy everything in a reference, unless your goal is photorealism - a cheap parlor trick IMO.

i would argue that design and simplification are a foundational aspect of drawing and painting, knowing what to leave out is essential

a quote from one of my favorite artists Hollis Dunlap

" Also I tone down the reflected lights and emphasize the main contrast. Thats really whats important, to not let reflected lights become so important. The dynamic range of your vision is a lot greater than what you can paint, so you have to emphasize the main contrasts. That is, if getting a sense of light is important to you"

Go slower. You have the main idea set out, but look at the anatomical aspects. Look at the girl's eyelids, they seem not to be included within your drawing. It seems like you are blocking out shadow more than doing an outline. Work on your lines, they are a bit scribbly/chicken scratch. Use your pencil and find out the exact angle instead of eyeballing it. The nostril of the nose is at the wrong angle, and the left eyebrow is more curved than it needs to be. Slow down on the hair, erase the scribbles in the hair area, leave that for last. The drawing looks like a 40 year old woman rather than a young girl as in the photograph. Use points instead of thick lines to emphasize the roundness of the eyeball beneath the waterline. Look at the planes of the face, plus because this is a photograph, it will look a bit flat, unless you use knowledge of how the skull lies beneath the muscles and skin. You have the shadow of the left side of the face going well, but clean up your lines. Sorry if this was not much help.

What? It's science anon. Paint can only be so bright since we see it with reflected light. But our eye can pick up actual light sources that are many times brighter than paint can ever be (or even a screen with an image on it). The human eye has a much greater dynamic range than even the best cameras, that's why photos are often overexposed but our eye doesn't do that, and it's why HDR tends to look more realistic to us. Since paint can only be so bright, we as artists need to compress a lot of value ranges when we paint.

aw, baby's first hour long session. mine usually last more than five.
as far as advice: draw bigger and change medium. if you're going to use pencils for shading, get hard and soft ones, otherwise pencil (and pen) are only good for lines. i was going to say go digital, but watercolor, any paint, markers, charcoal, all could give better results than trying to hatch with a single HB pencil. you also draw small because pencil makes thin lines and trying to shade a large drawing with a pencil would be mentally irregular, but drawing small isn't doing you any good either.

Question:

I've noticed lately that when I draw, my art tends to be lopsided.

For instance, I'll draw a man. Somewhat satisfied with how he looks. Flip the image horizontally and now I can see his left side is higher than the other.

Could it be my posture? I tend to look at things crooked and have a hard time drawing with my notepad completely straight. I even tried drawing a straight, vertical line the other day and had a hard time doing it.

It might be hard to tell, but I noticed it while working on this little doodle I did for someone.

Like i suggeated to someone else a little earlier, when drawing, take a few steps back to look at it. For the most part you're pretty accurate on proportions, a few mistakes with the face, but that's better than a lot of people can do. The biggest things I could say is draw lighter, pay more attention to the folds of the shirt, and try and give the hair more direction. I like shading in the hair evenly, just a touch lighter than it should be, then using pencils with different size lead to do the details (i even have a mechanical pencil with .3 mm lead).

Coloring and tips. So, here you go, this is my full critique of the drawing:

It seems to me that you have no clue what you are doing. You are diving into the deep end of something that you have no practice of. You need to practice the actual rules before you go into this animu shit
>inb4 rules in art hurdur
You are coloring like it is a coloring book. The anatomy is completely off, and even if you are trying to do an anime/manga style, it is not working out for you. Look at values and the color spectrum-- the color scheme is totally wacked out. Research other anime/manga artists, do copies of them, whatever. If you want to do this style, you must learn the basics first, such as understanding light and shadow, and it affects color on an object or skin, and also how drapery falls on a figure.

TL;DR: It looks like something off of deviantart, go back there and you'll get much more positive reviews.
