the perspective isn't necessarily off there's just very little to see where it is. The boat is rocking, the staircase is not conforming, theres just a blob of foilage dominating the image, and a horizon that is not where you see it in the image. the bigger problem is the composition isn't really there. Its a storm but they're taking a leisurely stroll down a slippery staircase when they're in a hurry. Wind isn't grabbing anything but rain. The sharp turn of the staircase on the left side doesn't lead the eye properly. I would put the hint of a house peeking out from the foilage to lead the eye to the boat but also establish the perspective and geometry better. Holding the hat down with one hand, skipping a step, grabbing the rail, struggling against the windd with the umbrella, coat flailing, wave rocking a boat in the mist, there are things you can do.

This is like a problem i have sometimes. a low perspective, but still looking down at the legs. The hips are really important here. The near hip needs to go up and out more, would also suggest flipping the scissor action on the legs that would fix a lot. The other option is to bring the leg out so you can see the walking motion, then the hips follow. Maybe it's reffed. I'd still do something.

Discipline. Working with limitations--time/palette/layers/etc. While at the same time forcing yourself outside of your comfort zone, i.e. maintaining a wide range of values. Self evaluate and reinforce that until it's habitual.

Do creative works fairly routinely, but try studies every once in a while simply to focus on technical skill. Again, force limitation, like trying to render at least a convincing thumbnail in a certain amount of time.

I don't paint often, I could never get behind it in any art class.
I'm way more into simple cartoon stuff but

I want to learn how to paint like this and APPLY it to cartoon stuff,

did a quick head and spent a solid couple hours painting its shading.

I'm sure its shit but at least let me know if I', in the right direction as far as adding color, lights and darks, and whatever else goes.

New personal piece, WIP. Some parts are going to be repainted, like the clouds with a warmer underpainting. Also, foreground and midground are unfinished, but I think I like the shapes well enough to start drawing it out. Any feedback, though?

>>1807732

Nicely done so far. I don't know exactly where you want to take this piece, but if I was painting it I would first lighten the background along with the distant structures, even just like 1 step with a bit of yellow in it, to push the turret out more as a focus. It'd also make the background structures less apparent, which would make the turret look larger and taller by contrast. Also, maybe darken the background directly behind the turret and play up the light hitting it - it'd make for a nice counterchange going upwards and things that are darker at the top typically feel heavier and more imposing. Again, though, I don't know exactly how you want this piece to feel - if you let me know I can probably critique it better.

>>1807847

See how from the thumbnail it's so close to working? Look at what information it's giving us that's convincing and you'll have the essence of the mass. You have the shape, just make a textured, flat midtone and draw the specular lit part on top. Then a few accents, like two to four. Look at Frans Hals' Malle Babbe, how the bonnet is just a gradiated midtone with a few strokes on top.

it's just hypocrites pretending to show their love for a person they didnt give a fuck about for years/decades. it's like when your granny dies and you are sad that she died while you spend your whole life ignoring her instead of visiting her once in a while.
also this shit is always a chance for people to get attention by doing a portrait piece of their "favourite" actor. it's sad that this person had to die so people would start caring about him

Basically what >>1807969 said, and it's not like people say "you don't realize what you have until it's gone" for nothing. Death is a big thing, and sadly most people don't have the time to actively love and show affection towards someone unless they are extremely devoted and/or close to them, or something like this happens. Death and loss make you realize how important the person or object you lost was, so naturally, you mourn for it. There's nothing stupid about it, it's completely natural. Death is just an extreme wake-up call where you usually end up realizing how much you liked that person.

That seems to be the case. It's not really comparable with Wittgenstein's dicta, though, which was a stylistic choice; rather, it just might be that when one does not have a good enough grasp of another language's grammar and rhetoric, the easiest way to convey a complex message is through aphorisms.

However, I think what he means is very related to this:

when i was first getting into painting i recall thinking that i'd never be able to notice all these little illusions and shit, and so it would be hard for me to paint color accurately, but you don't ever need to see them although manipulating them is fun. you can forget about them for the most part as long as the color you mix is shifted correctly from the colors immediately surrounding it. you don't need to know A and B are the same to paint them the same.

but (!) there is a whole other set of tonal and color interactions called 'field effects' (the abusive 'fake 3d glasses' effect is an example. the way that strong backlight eats into a silhouette is another obv. one) which you really do need to know which are often very subtle and have an enormous effect on the realness of your painting, luckily they don't really come into play until you've got the fundamentals down.

I think either a pose/facial expression with a bit more attitude or something would look good, and maybe some more dramatic or interesting lighting. Perhaps adding in a stronger accent colour...the reds and oranges you can probably pop out a bit more. Take a look at Min Yum's stuff, he has a few images with similar palettes/moods, but he manages to pop in a bit more interest.

You have these really jarring hard edges and soft transitions. The lighted sides make it seem like the material is metal, and the lighted desaturated patches make it seem like it's painted camo.

Also consider that rock walls aren't made from one giant rock broken into a bunch of pieces. Even in a rock wall that looks like it's made from the same rock, the people building it probably pushed them in at random, so raised edges are very rarely consistent from rock to rock.

Temple pic from 2 days ago. Its starting to look really muddy because I've upped the contrast on a new layer so I'll need to go through and fix all the artifacts but are the values starting to be at a place where they look good? Any other errors? This is the first piece I have ever tried to "finish" and I know editing brightness/contrast through photoshop probably isn't optimal but I'm not at a place where I can lay down values confidently from the get go.

Why would you do that? Good paintings are all about colour. If you wanna practice rendering, you could always do a paint over of a still-image from an animated movie. People don't always just say "Loomis" because it's some /ic/ meme, it really is the best way to get the basics down and work towards being advanced.
