When my testo is low I tend to be less decisive, meek, which results in weak pieces, you can feel it in everything that firez shows, passionless scratching and mingling for hours, inability to care of obvious mistake in fear of ruining what he already put into it. No, it is you who has to show even one capable realistic painter in history who doesn't display drawing skills. You're so incredibly lost it's unbelievable. Descriptive drawing, understood as a trompe l'oeil artifact based on lines (and, derivatively, shades) that collapses a 3D input into an 2D convincing equivalent, is the very foundation of image as the specific problem of the art of painting (sculpting is different, though drawing also helps to it immensely). It's pathetic to see that people who don't even get that pretend to ever become competent artists, and even take pride on it.

Unless you just want to do Bob Ross formulaic iconic crap, you absolutely need to be able to draw in order to paint.

Drawing is not just the process of showing form with lines. If you were to paint anything with any sort of structure, that exists in 3 dimensional space, you need drawing to do so. Painting a house in perspective, correctly defining its edges etc is also called drawing. Even when you do it with a brush instead of a pencil. Without drawing, you can't do anything that requires structure and perspective. You might get away with not being able to draw by doing only naturalistic landscapes where no object has vanishing points, but that hardly makes you a good painter.

I'd like to hear how so.

He (or they) are absolutely right: disregard the specific plastic media the final render is made through, drawing is the basis for the groundwork/structure needed to make any realistic piece, as it is what allows you to organize your 2D topology as a 3D emulous.

Have these threads always being so decadent? This polemic is pitiful even for a beginners thread, which this is supposedly not.

My guess is the fear of accurate observational drawing comes from some mix of:
-People being afraid of being labelled a photocopier
-People thinking using a reference is cheating
-People who recently learned about construction and form, yet forgot about the importance of accurate observation

Copying shapes (2d) is useless unless you understand the three dimensional form.

If you want to be a concept artist, understanding form is the most important thing other than design ability. You won't build your ability by copying, you build it by interpreting and recreating 3d forms. That is the main thing. If you want to use shapes to set this up, be my guest, but copying alone will get a beginner nowhere.

I like the style, but for me the blue light is the hardest one. Maybe its too strong, but it doesn't create the illusion straight away. Also mask has so different tone, that I didn't even realise it first.

I'm not the right person to talk about that mask, but I could point out that our right-side ear doesn't have a shadow at all. Yet left has against the light coming from left. I don't also get the shadows on the base of the ears, they're bit like nowhere, like blobs.

But keep working on it, I do like it.

The lack of unity in the elements that make up the storytelling of the picture is what really kills it for me.

Its a warrior salesman person standing inside what looks like a part of a city but it appears to be at the edge of the world. There is a pope type and a close enough guy looking at a gigantic orb that has a highlight that contradicts the shading of the foreground as far as I can see.

I don't know if you spent forever trying to recreate the Shaddy method on the landscape in the background or if you slapped a picture in there. In the end it all looks disconnected and the design of the elements as a whole lacks a unifying element.

Do you have a kneaded eraser? Try and sculpt what your doing and then get the lightning information from that. Your approach is so brush heavy that to redo and area takes a long time. Maybe spend more time planning before you jump in.

Neck stands out the most, it's a very odd shape (perfect straight line) compare to the rest.

These little issues are symptoms of a general, and serious problem, which is a lack of construction - that is, the placement and description of the features and the hair are not sensitive to the volume and orientation of the head. I did a crappy redline to show how the features are misplaced on the head according to the head's orientation (left). If you draw the head according to the current placement of the features, you'll see that it's pretty much head-on, and you can see that the head in your drawing bulges way out to the right.

this. clipping masks are awesome but it's too early for you to use them so abusively. find joy in painting, as if you were working traditionally. set your brush to 95% opacity, and set transfer to only affect flow (via pen pressure) with a minimum flow of ~40%. this gives you a nice amount of pressure control without making the brush very transparent, which imo hurts rookies quite a bit (and increases risk of tendonitis). and then just take your time, and tackel the image in stages. don't try to figure out a fast efficient workflow just yet.

it's hard, we know. you want to get it to look good fast, we've all been there.

A crazy frenzy of strokes and masks probably helped you get a loose impression of it in no time at all, but if you want to continue the painting you have to work around, paint over or undo all of those strokes since it's a very poor base. I would have started with the darkest values on that arch, and then build it up and make it pop with where it's catching the light.

I work as a tattoo artist, and I am only saying this so you have someone who has seen this kind of thing, being 100% honest and direct to you about this stuff. Do not bring that into a tattoo artist. It's just not good. I understand you want to do something you thought of and you probably put your best into it. But this shit is going on your skin. Leave the designing to the professionals. Just find an artist you really like, that specializes in the things you enjoy looking at, and ask them to draw you up something. It will save you alot of time and money because you will end up getting that shit removed in a few years.

starting with anatomy kills the idea, you should have started with a loose sketch; considering the gesture, clothes, hair and background

pic related: this progression should only really be used in practicing/training/studying. There is really no need to highlight muscle insertions and bone like that, when its all going to be covered by fat and apparel. Simple forms would have been enough as a start, then you would proceed to develop the image as a whole, not just the figure.

Its more a problem of draftsmanship,
illustration =/= anatomy practice
illustration = anatomy application
You're treading on a grey area between
>i need to do anatomically correct studies
>but its boring and I want to make it interesting

I suppose that doesnt fix anything now, but keep that in mind next time

You are adding random cap to a painting that had no purpose or idea behind it. Naturally it's gonna look like shit. Just stop working on this and next time THINK before you paint. Design a good composition and have a story and idea in mind. Adding a focal point as an afterthought will always result in crap. The rest of the painting is supposed to be created around the focal point, not the other way around.

First of all, sorry for butchering ur piece. I just think it has potential but has some major compositional issues. Try to add elements that lead the eye to the guy holding up that plate. Playing around a little with the light and shadow can help lot leading the eye.

>> No.1806254

>>1806238
It just feels empty, and begs the question 'Why?' in many different ways. Why is this stone patio out in the middle on nowhere? Why is that guy holding up his bowl? What are the people in the distance doing? What are the people close to us doing? And finally (of course), why is that big orb on the mountain? What is it?

See - there's a lot of stuff in your drawing that seems like it's trying to imply some sort of narrative or story, but it's just not happening right now. Nothing feels really unified, and the things happening in the scene are confusing.

I think this biggest issue is just how disconnected the scene on the stone patio is to the rest of the image. Also, add some shadows underneath the figures. They're just floating there.

I agree with >>1806231 , and I hope you see why. I agree with starting over on this one, and being more loose at the beginning and really fleshing out a scene and focal point, and to focus on an idea around that focal point before you in and tightly render the environment.

Hope that helps!

The pose is very awkward and stiff. It's lacking energy and momentum; the subject is walking forward, yet she's not tilting forward at all. The feet don't really looked grounded either. And the gesture in general could be better/

Overall you've got some nice anatomy and shading though. The neck could be a bit shorter though, and the face could use more shading so that it doesn't look so flat.

really interesting but work on your edge control. pay attention to the color of an edge, and how the form turns and the quality of the light... every edge here is sharp and has no actual "edge" its just borders... when i look at the edges the picture looks very flat but when i tear my eyes away from them and look at the masses your rendering gives good form. get the sphere to not be so pasted in too and get it in the same light key/light direction and maybe consider opening the canvas up to the right just a tad to give the sphere room to breath.

remember that light coming through holes gets refracted and gets dimmer, the smaller the hole the more refraction, so those little holes where we see the light of the sky between the pipes and junk on the left should be much dimmer. as a result, to the eye it looks like it is part of the mass instead of a hole in it, you have to darken it slightly to get it to recede the way it should. also the tubes spiraling up the pipes on the right are completely out of perspective and flat and i think its kind of a dumb idea anyway, a spiral just doesnt fit in with the other shapes you have going on imo. the perspective of the structure up at the top could be reinforced as well good job tho man the colors are pretty spot on for the most part, you got the light key established pretty damn well/the shadows and lights are separated cleanly and clearly and the design of the structure is cool. works as an concept enviro but if you want it to work on its own maybe a figure or two or something extra for interest

Am I going in the right direction on this one? Any tips? Everything is still pretty rough and sketchy but I might try to bring this one up to a decent level of polish just for fun. Looking for any fundamental problems that are fixable within in the context of the image. Composition might be fucked, but is there any way to alleviate it without starting from scratch, etc. Thanks!

Start paying more attention to the way things are positioned (particularly angles) and proportioned. Especially if you aren't intending to take liberties with the reference.

Basically, be more careful, note spacial relations/overlapping, and measure.

>> No.1806838

Looks like you got the angle on some of the stairs in the foreground wrong. All of yours look right about 90 and there is a slight slant in the reference picture, screws up your perspective. In fact a lot of the angles are off, the landing stairs ought to be more tilted too.

Theres a smoothness to your brushstroke that's really nice, and you seem to have a good grasp of using color to create depth?

But the blurring looks pretty tacky. Your work isn't photorealistic enough to get away with fake photography effects.

one of the things i get horribly obsessed over is getting down to a very fine pixel-level and getting in details at the low level aliasing level for some reason.
I suppose I don't know how to block out values and form properly enough to go beyond OCDing a bunch of details until it looks sort of presentable.

Photoshop by the way
