As a career in fact, and I want it so badly, but I'm my shitty country all I have left is to study architecture, which will give me some stability in my life tho. But to get in I have to study a lot, maths, chemistry etc (just for the entrance exam), and also for an artsy exam (basic perspective, composition, color theory etc), which is done with 6 fucking colors and 2B. So I had spent my time doing perspective and anatomic studies, some gestures, but everything on paper.

But since all sounds like excuses, I'm plugin my tablet as we speak. Thank you anon, you make me remember why I'm doing all this

You could go one step further and drop school. You don't need it, it's just busywork that gets in the way of actual progress, a lot of stuff in life is. If you aren't happy and don't have time to do what you want to be doing, stop doing what you're doing and leave, it's not as easy as that but hey, it's your choice.

I've thought really hard on this matter, and I came up with studying first, or I would end up in the streets or on a shitty absorptive work and even less time (thank you, country of mine). Studying, and only doing that would give me plenty of time for complementing that education (which is a design and artsy education) with all the resources I've gather so far from the internet.

Also architecture has piqued my interest, so either way or another, as some anon say once, do something so you can always win. For sure I will drop this career if it gets in the way or I find I'm not happy with it but so far I've found myself looking forward to what I'll learn.

Thank you anon for making me reflexive about it

You're not wrong there. I didn't put a lot of time into it (case in point: his body is just mirrored).
But, imo, the first one has way too many unnecessary lines. Kind of overworked. I also wanted to push the shark features a lot more with the last one - The shark parts just seem kind of tacked on with 1 and 2. It just wasn't really thought through in general (ex: I don't think a fistfighter would willingly mess up his depth perception by putting a headband over one eye).
I understand your concern entirely, I'll work on injecting more personality.

The only reason why the 3rd one looks more lifeless is because it's such a static pose. 2013 is much better than 2014, cos the pose is easier to read and a lot more confident. You have a defined line of action and can see that she's going to land properly, whereas in the later version it looks like she tripped and lost her balance

The shapes are a lot more appealing in 13 too, 14 is just too rounded and the colours too muted

Here's mine from January to July.
Boy, looking back and some of the old work I did back at the start of the year makes me cringe. All the figures are from imagination as I feel that's the only fair way to gauge progress, at least for me.
Honestly though I feel like I didn't make as much progress as I could have. Too much time wasted messing around on the internet and Dota 2 and not enough time on focused, smart study.
Stupid exams got in the way during late March and most of June so I didn't have time to do any art during that time either. ;_;
(Although I probably would have wasted most of that time on the internet as well.)

the idea isn't wrong; to see the head as a box but it's wrong to just completely ignore the spherical shape of the head. the ball and plane method has its use. you see, the head is a fairly complex form.
you have to combine those 2 to accurately describe it.
the way you do it, you make the head look like an alien head. it extends too much to the back and it's more cuboid than it is in reality.
the box is just suppossed to help you with perspective and building the features. you arent suppossed to completely rely on it.

your drawings are quite bad, the perspective is off, the shape of the head is off.
i have no idea what you are trying to do with the weird thing in the middle of your picture, etc.
you should really check up on more resources regarding the head.

Then what is the point of this board in the first place? It should be called "some artwork critique" as in you have to be a certain skill level to get a reply.

It doesn't make sense why artist would be condescending towards starting artist. Don't you think artist who have put in the time and effort to get better would be humble and helpful towards anyone who has the curiosity and drive to draw because at one point that artist was a shitty, clueless beginner himself ?
If they don't ( and that's fine) then they shouldn't be posting advice in the first place.

I think you got it wrong when you say noobs lash out to save face I think it's more of doosh like yourself who lash out for no reason to give themselves a face since anything you say on /ic/ is safe behind a wall of anonymity. If you ever go to communities like concept art or the like you will never find people like the ones on /ic/ because anyone who says anything can have people check out their sketchbook and make a judgement to disregard their critique or not. This is commonly advocated on CA, that is, to make sure the person giving you crit is actually knowledgeable before taking his advice since if he is shitty himself you'll end up getting worse. Not saying CA is the holy grail because it's shit now days.

On /ic/ we have to make a guess whether the person who is giving us crit is good or shit and we don't have anyway of knowing forsure but we do know that when they really don't have anything to say despite a specific question asked besides condescending one liners and irrelevant image macros then it's probably best to assume they play with dragon dildos and either have a very limited vocabulary or don't really know anything in the first place.

when i did one of these a while ago i made that mistake too. the objective is to make yourself look awesome, not be all honest and try do it in the same style, the same pose or the same amount of time taken.

You're right - 2013 is better because it's simpler and more readable. But this is an isolated example, and the face is better in 2014. Plus I can't help but feel you're drawing a different pose between these two images. Like it's running differently in each one. (I'm not counting 2010 because you are on a different level now, skill wise).

your line quality hasn't improved since then which is the biggest thing holding your art back, the scratchy look makes it seem like you don't care very much about your drawings. for me, i feel like your gesture drawing in the previous years looks better than the hard lines you have in the most recent one. if you wanna work on realism, read the sticky, try and draw from life more and work on anatomy (that's how i improved...by like, a lot)

>> No.1802422

>>1802380
thanks a lot. i feel like the reason my gesturing is getting bad is because i'm trying to work towards proportioning the body and realism on the details and i lose the kind of more "natural" gestures i can pull out in cartoons.
i don't really know how to mesh the two and i feel like that is a large flaw for me

>> No.1802440

>>1802422
you can use your gestures as a base to put in those solid line-work, if that's the type of style you prefer (: or you can work on values/lighting/shading if that's what you prefer. don't worry, you'll get it!

Thanks everyone!

I think you guys are all correct. After I posted that image, I really had to questions myself: what did I learn in the past 3 fucking years?
I always thought I was improving, yet I had done no practice in these three years whatsoever.
I remembered after my second drawing that the original image was actually inspired by someone I liked when I was 16.
I didn't have much skill back then, yet my emotions when I drew that anime piece of shit, was probably very genuine.
I shamelessly attempted a second try at this thing.
This time, even if it was for only about a few hours, I tried my best.
/ic/ inspires me because there are so many people who are really passionate, regardless of their skill level. I feel like I insulted that community.
I owe you guys an apology for presenting something I made half-heartedly before.

Like always, I'll be looking for more criticism.
