Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Success comes only with personal effort, aided by whatever knowledge the individual can apply along with the effort. If this were not true, we would be able to do anything in the world simply by reading books."

Previous Thread: >>1797049

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

I keep doing loomis method and I am surely missing something.

I draw an image, scan it, lay it over the original that I used as reference. most times what I drew is too wide.

So the brow is about the distance from the chin to the brow (on an adult-teen woman)?

How do you find this at the 3/4s view because I am basically having to measure and still getting it wrong. Thanks.

Learn how to draw boxes in perspective, and how to divide a side of a box into the right amount of subunits you need. The measurements for the front view of the head can be drawn onto the front, then the head is carved out of the box.

Basically, try practicing different ways to start a head construction, study a lot of heads from real life and photos, and learn your perspective. If you're having difficulty keeping proportions when rotating complex forms, then practice on basic forms until you're proficient.

You probably need a coherent objective, right? I'll try giving you some tasks.

I don't want to overhelm you with too many.

For composition. Try copying a few panels from your favorite comic artists, then copy a single panel from one of the "most hard"/technically experienced comic artist (e.g. Kentaro Miura). You don't have to render it, divide the composition and replace the objects of focus with shapes.

If you're copying loomis, copy a single figure a few extra times in order for it to sink in.

Update:

Toned down the eyelashes on Ed. Maybe I'm just used to seeing Ed in doujinshi so I think she's really a she.

Jet's shoulder widened and body stretched a little to give some more bulk.

>>1801555
Yes, it's true that "angular" can mean more male for some characters. But to me, what makes a male more male is the wideness of the chin. Pointy chins=girls and youth. I did change it to satisfy Anon, but I do like rounder fleshy faces to give them some volume.

Good enough to go for me, just have to wait for the pizza place to open so I can grab a slice while picking up an ink cartridge.

What? The SP2? I've had 2 tablet PCs prior to the SP2 and this blows them away hands down. We're getting to the point where we don't have to chose between having a powerful tablet or long battery life.

The SP2 is a fairly good compromise where it can run Manga Studio with 10+ layers, and has a running time of roughly 6 hours. I don't have keep staring at the battery indicator as I did on my first tablet.

Manga Studio/CSP is also Touch Friendly. With the SP2 and its great Palm Rejection drivers, it's a dream to work on, using touch to pinch and zoom/rotate your canvas. For some reason, my previous tablets can't do this, even though all are the same Wacom technology and Manga Studio software. I end up making marks with my fingers.

Windows 8 is also much better than Windows 7 for Tablets. I still run W7 on my studio PC where my Cintiq is hooked up to. There's no reason to really upgrade on a desktop PC. But W8 has an easier On Screen Keyboard and other Touch friendly menus that make it shine on tablets. I treat the Tile interface just like an expanded Start/Shortcut menu. Leaves the Desktop fairly uncluttered.

The SP3 surpasses the hardware of the SP2 in screen resolution/size, more adjustable kickstand, lighter weight. But it has the one big caveat is that they jumped from Wacom to N-Trig, a company that needs to improve their drivers to really get the artists to jump on board.

Cute pic.

Drawing isn't a set dichotomies. What the Loomis books are trying to impart onto you is the fundamentals of drawing which can be boiled down to Gesture, form and perspective. Loomis isn't the only way to go but he will tell you everything you need to know when it comes to drawing and how to apply the fundamentals.

It's gonna take a very long time until you can apply what you learn effectively to what you want to wind up doing and all the notions you had when you first started are gonna seem silly but if it's what you really wanna do you'll stick it out and you'll stick with it.

you people need to think about the bigger picture. you only focused on somewhat recreating the features. but you werent paying attention to how your drawing actually looks.
before you said you weren't trying to make it look good, but honeestly that's the same as not caring about what you draw at all.

>>1802261
this is the same type of problem. and i think i told you before: you are too focused on anatomy.
the problem with this is that you'll lose sight of what your drawing looks like.
if your priority is "anatomy" then you may get some anatomical detail right, but that doesn't mean that is what would help your drawings.

for example, a lot of your marks are obviously anatomical details, but does it really fit? is that the shoulder, the back, the arm, the body, the ass, the leg of a child? i don't think so.
being too conscious of anatomy will only make you get worse at it. be more flexible in your thinking

Usually these books are completely TERRIBLE and I would suggest against you buying any of them.

The one I have is a Japanese "How to Draw Anime" book (translated into Chinese). there are also anatomical mistakes, like the thumb is overlapping where it should be more visible (or you drew fingers on the wrong plane), one iris is twice bigger/smaller than the other. misplaced mouth, spine erect when it should be bending, foot closer to us needs to be bigger, no bellybutton.

It's inspired by it obviously.

The design needs to be simple. I'm hoping to make the game world the more interesting eye candy.

Game itself has nothing to do with Journey by the by. And this is just one character in the game. The other characters will not look like this.

Just trying to give some context.

literally though the design is borderline plagiarism, you could add something or change something else like give the character a face or give it longer legs or put a pattern on the cloak but as it stands, if you showed me that design i would immediately think journey, not your game

Just a concept made. Feel free to suggest what I can do with it.

I know you suggested adding a face but I'm afraid that doesn't work for this particular character. That's the one suggestion that can't be done.

Other suggestions are welcome. Just remember it has to be as simple as possible because I have to animate it which I'm completely new that..

I intended to keep the trim on the robe, yes.

Just have to nail another kind of sillohoute to fit the character. I'm sure I'll figure it out

Meantime, I just finished this concept for a character called The Jester to be used in the same game as the last character.

Considering giving him feet but for now I figured he can just bounce around.

I doubt I'll leave him bald but I couldn't figure out a good enough hat design for him. Any suggestions on a hat style would be swell.
