Thanks for confirming, it's something I've been thinking about for a while. What I try and think about is capturing proportions and gesture, and being efficient with lines. Capturing the character of these people is somewhere underneath those two, but the past two weeks I've been wondering. Its tough to do in 15-60 seconds.

Used to do the same until I realized it's pretty much impossible to make that look good. Look at Toulouse-Lautrec and Edger Degas' sketches - especially those done with pencil and pastel. Simple gesture and usually just one or two focus points that complements it like focusing on the portrait, a leg or hands.

I've heard different thoughts on how 30-second to 1-minute gestures should be handled (Gurney even brung this up in one of his blog posts). Some feel that a simple "skeleton" is good enough, while others feel that building up a mass to better imply movement is the key.

yes, my point is that if you want you can spend the same time you would making contours to mark out areas of tone. see you're going for something more like A where it's just as quick or quicker to do B. i don't think you should stop what you're doing, just doing a few tonal drawings too would help you out i think.

your shading's all over the place, her "hat" is all smudged, then you tried to use cross hatching on the sleeves, and then progressive lines on the apron...
your lines need to vary a lot more in terms of weight, the face is too heavy and so are the frills on the robe.
think about varying line lengths from darker to lighter as appropriate, as well as thinking about the direction the lines need to follow, ie, the shape of the actual object your shading so they follow the contour of the "form".

and just keep practicing

what i ended up doing was looking at some cartoons and old manly anime which still had noses and seeing how they did it. then looking at photos and my own nose to see how those simplifications lined up with real features. after drawing about 30 in a few different ways i had a much better idea.

I drew it during an university lesson to my notebook.
I hardly see how it resembles GG in any way though. That critter originates from a game I partook in on /tg/.

thanks! it's not really my job yet, but next year will be the first of three where i'll be expected to do nothing but illustration at school. i'm at third year of art school now, and even if i love drawing, the idea of making money with it is still pretty scary.
did this yesterday, again. i decided to go full-moebius in order to try color… so i'll roll myself a big joint, scan this drawing, and try to lose myself into sweet, soft colors. aw yiss.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new spiral sketchbook. What I've used for years is the Cachet Studio, and more recently Global Arts Travelogue.

I was looking at the Global Arts Flip-Sketch, and was snooping around Amazon and found one, Lemac Art Show that has good reviews. Anyone have experience with either? Or a suggestion?

not sure if you're being sarcastic or not because its pretty scratchy and shit

but yeah started by drawing the outlines of the big objects, keeping the relative objects the right size and leaving spaces for foreground objects, then adding smaller objects. the books were based on how the books were stacked but it's not book for book or anything

pic related is sketches of the cast of freaks and geeks
