Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1793724

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Normal communication while providing redlines for /ic/ is a common mistake.
Failing to avoid it will inevitably result in shitstorms by bitter shitposters sooner or later.

Just drop the redline and let it do the talking. The only valid replies to your redline are the ones that are redlines themselves.

>> No.1797132 [DELETED]

>>1797129

An artists response to redlines should be "thank you" and that's it. It's up to them to follow it not the redliner to complain if they didn't. If the artist won't grow it's his fault.

You shouldn't consider anything that's not a criticism or a redline as a valid form of human communication on /ic/ and that includes blind compliments. It encourages Autist McAutistics who literally shit themselves in impotent rage on /ic/ nonstop >>1797126

The only possible way to do what you are proposing is to relinquish our Anonymity and begin using Tripcodes but I honestly don't see that happening.

Though there is a chance of losing Anonymity when you post a drawing, the issue is when it comes to giving feedback the Anonymity is there and we don't know who or what level of understanding the Anon is at and for all we know they may just be shitposting or parroting kernels of information.
.
This is where the term "Pictures speak louder than words" makes sense as a drawing will depict at what level of understanding you are and I personally would like to see drawings or at least sketches posted when giving a Critique that addresses the issue with the drawing you are Critiquing in a visual sense.

One might argue that if we spend time and effort giving a visual aid we would be spoonfeeding or the guy we are giving a critique wont listen and its not worth the trouble but get this by providing that visual aid at the very least you did an exercise drafting an example of how to correct a flaw and you learn better that way.

There's good and bad here learn how to filter the shitposting, I personally hate to see this place go to shit since I've seen Anons improve here and learn from each other we got a good thing going on here.

You're all still faggots, though.

The biggest problem with this is the confusing value structure. You have a nice, simple and kind of contemplative idea for this painting, but the execution is in direct contrast very noisy and hard on the eye because everything is bright and contrasty and competing for attention.

Tone it down, structure the values in a simple, non-confusing way and use your idea of the stars merging with the lights of the buildings more subtly so that it doesn't distract from the main focal point, but instead tries to enhance it.

Obviously, that's just one way to possibly fix it, if you want to have a really starry and bright night sky, that can work too, but you still have to create a better value structure for it.

Calling out you guys' balant idolism of Teal and Kyle isn't being angry. I am glad they rarely post here anymore though, as It shows these threads true colors when you don't have artists to circle jerk over. Plus it not like you guys actually applied their advice either.

Also people have the right to criticize redlines, nor do they have to make one themselves in response to another one. In Teal's case anons questioned why he would criticise using a particular confortable angle for a face while he does it as well in his own drawings, and that he redlines art in his own style instead of considering the design the original artist made.

I'd say it's a sliding scale. Starting out spend more time on studies of all kinds, and less time on pieces with no direct reference. As you get better, decrease the amount of time on the former and increase the amount of time on the latter. The logic is that you need to improve your mental library, observational skills, and motor skills before you can get much use from trying to create things on your own. Yes it can inform you of where you are weakest by testing what you know, but early on you'll know next to nothing about everything.

hey manga dude. i'm pretty much on the same path. i'm no master myself, but here's a few tips:

>basic drawing ability
to put it in simple terms, that just comes from drawing a lot. quantity is just as important as quality, especially if you are a beginner.
as for what to practice: learn how to draw your characters from different angles and perspectives. make character sheets, refine your style.
judge your own level by the kind of poses and the kind of angles that you are able to draw. as well as your expressions and designs.
as for how to do that: maybe +25% will be fundamentals like learning anatomy, practicing sketching people, gestures etc. But the large majority of it will be pure raw learning by repetition. draw until you get it right.

>more specific advice relatng to manga:
INKING. this topic is very underrated. but imo it's one of the most important things. study inking, study various artists, you can also practice inking without actual ink by paying close attention to the type of pencil marks you make.
in my opinion, this topic is so criminally underrated, it's probably one of the top reasons why weeb manga looks so shit. inking is a deep topic, and very good inking can make for a very polished look.

another thing is learning to make manuscripts. it's basically storyboarding.
here as well, you can learn a lot by studying other artists. personally i've studied this topic quite a bit, and there is a lot to say, but for now just try to focus on your basic drawing skills. study paneling and such things while reading manga sometimes.

so to summarize, you need to learn how to do:
>charactersheets
>all kinds of poses and angles
>expression and style
>inking
>storyboarding
and to do that, refer to fundies, repetition and studying other artists works.
hope that helps

If you look closely you can see that the artist accounted the perspective of the ellipse being the farthest eye, it's foreshortened and yours is not.

It's nice that you have all these drawings but you want to draw smarter not harder, if you want to make a believable figure remember to take into account the perspective involved and the same goes in all good drawings.

Look into Loomis's successful drawing and perspective made easy and take perspective into account while you construct the figure.

Outlining black is probably a bad idea if you want to colorize, using the cleaned up pencil stage is a better start, because pencil allows you to keep different shaded outlines and much finer outlines, because no bleeding.

Look at e.g. http://g.e-hentai.org/g/643502/b798eaa764/ for how some professionals paint.

? That is just pretentious bullshit from kiddies. And kiddies should keep their mouth shut. Nobody wants to listen to their crap.

Anyone with experience can look at a copied/traced piece and say where the artist is lacking. A copied piece of art makes it easy to assess what went wrong, because only an experienced artist can understand another experienced artists intents enough to make a good copy of their work. And there is no guessing left what was intentional and what wasn't unlike in an original piece, were mistakes could be intentional or accidental.

IMHO, it would actually make a very easy test in school to see how far an aspiring artist is, because they will fail at copying things they haven't understood yet.

Constructing like this doesn't work with manga. This is okay if you go for action heroes, because there you actually construct real people. It is only secondary in manga, because you show impressions first.

Also, you should look at "sketching manga-style", its a good introduction to the topic.

And don't use too much pressure with a H+ pencil. Use HB if you want better visible lines.

wat.
no. the thing is, there is no real point to doing a copy like that. it's what hobbyists do for fun.
and beyond that, like i said, the issue is that there isn't much to say about it. what, are we supposed to give you advice on how to refine your copy? i don't see any point in that. i mean what do you expect us to say?

>no. the thing is, there is no real point to doing a copy like that. it's what hobbyists do for fun.
Starting with a copy is a good start as anything else when getting into art. If you think it matters if your first pieces are copies or 'originals' then you are wrong. At least a copy won't make the beginner feel like utter trash after seeing their failure or go off with wild/stupid ideas for a few years (and not learning anything at all because muh style, muh original artz).

>and beyond that, like i said, the issue is that there isn't much to say about it. what, are we supposed to give you advice on how to refine your copy? i don't see any point in that. i mean what do you expect us to say?

There is a lot to see. A copy shows where an artist is lacking, because they will have problems reproducing parts which need something they haven't understood yet. Be it usage of tools, perspective, volume, color/shading, anatomy, style, techniques, or message.

Pointing out these flaws is easy and goes far.

And you can always tell someone they should try more original art.

>i didn't say tracing is evil, but POSTING tracings is quite obviously not popular on any art forum. if you are surprised that anons are shitting on you, then you're an idiot.
Obviously posting copies isn't popular with the kids.

Not that Anon, but a copy is just that. A copy, i'll play the devil's advocate here for a moment but the only possible thing you may learn from copying is maybe a stylized proportion that works with one specific genre or character. However there is also the possibility of learning a bad habit if the Artist you are copying from doesn't have their fundies down; the sure way of avoiding this is copy from masters of old, a master draftsman or an Artist who has strong fundamentals.

However when it comes to stylized works a copy does not reveal what someone is truly missing, the problems have already been solved for you when you are copying stylized work and if you really want to know what you are missing use a real figure for reference, stylize it and then see for yourself.

I'll give you my reference for you to work with that's if you are up for it, try it for yourself.

Okay, for starters it's flat. There is no indication of form or perspective and it is incredibly stiff. It is void of any gracefulness as if you traced the drawing which further hinders gesture and though you shaded here and there that doesn't help the fact that it is missing forms.

In other words it's shit.

>There is a lot to see. A copy shows where an artist is lacking, because they will have problems reproducing parts which need something they haven't understood yet.
no, you don't understand shit.
copying lineart is easy, much easier than life drawing, but actually drawing something is in a entirely different league of difficulty. but the main point is, absolutely nobody wants too see that shit. which is why nobody encourages it.
like you said, you CAN study it to get some small insights, but it's not all that useful.

suppose i told you how to make it better, what would happen?
personally i don't even think it's possible for you to get a copy polished to a high level without understanding how to draw at that level.
and even if you DID manage to do it, at the end of the day, you still wouldn't be able to actually "draw" original work anywhere close to that level.
it's pretty much all around useless for anyone wanting real progress.

please, just take a look at your own original drawings.

>First time in a long time
Well that's your problem. Lots of practice is what keeps your imagination up to par and allows you to recall what you know. Please don't restrict yourself to only studies, freely drawing with no sort of guide outside your mind encourages creativity and reinforces the remembering of knowledge. If you rely on references all the time you won't be able to draw without them, and doodling whatever you want is a fun no artist should miss out on. It's important to study and learn but it's just as crucial to practice and keep up your personal artistic strength. The drawing doesn't look that bad, mostly just the arms that look very stiff and like you didn't know what to do with them, and the bulbous cloth and nonexistent feet. Stop reading books all day and take some time to just freely sketch and try to recall what you've learned and apply it. That's how you learn something.

tl;dr practice moar

a few things i noticed:
it looks like your idea for the drawing is still to vague, you don't really know what KIND of pose you're trying to draw. at the very least, you should have an idea of how the pose feels, in terms of atmosphere. is it aggressive? is it supposed to be direct? what are you trying to accomplish?

for example: for some reason, i think you are trying to bring the rapier close to the face. i assume you have some kind of vague idea as for why. but the thing is, maybe having the grip at chest height would be better. (the reference is about chest height as well)

also, there is no reason why you would lift your shoulders like that. try to hold anything in your hands and move your hands around. you'll notice that your shoulders are never lifted, ever. it would actually feel really unnatural to lift your shoulders.
remember this: normally, the only time you ever have to lift your shoulders is when you are shrugging, or when you are trying to get your elbow up or above the height of your shoulders. try it out.

learn to simplify more. notice how your neck is at an angle when it doesn't need to be.
also, the knees are bending backwards..

other things, some of them specific to drawing children:
>ears too high
>jaw too angular
>head too large
>neck sticks out too much
>kids don't have a strong waistline

generally, you are overthinking the anatomy. like with the shoulders. try to follow your sense of shape more.

I like it, it's very close to being a complete image and it's not porn.
What I would recommend is broaden the value range on her skin and the robe. You seem to have some ok contrast on the hair, but the rest of the features don't reflect that light source. To add to that maybe introduce some pink/red tones to her skin, right now it looks a bit gray/yellow, but again it might just need a push in value to make it pop.

Thanks a lot. I see what you mean by 'overthinking the anatomy', lately I feel like I'm becoming a slave to a set of rules while I think I should be working on 'feeling the drawing' if that makes sense. Hope it's better now.

Also, I don't get what you mean by "the neck doesn't need to be at an angle".

>> No.1801205

>>1801197
before your neck came down from the head at an angle. now it's better, but you can actually just make it come down completely vertically.
that way, you'll get even more of an impression that he/she's standing straight.
like i said, simplifying.

So I went past the point of stagnation and hit I'm worse than I was before level. Please help me. I used to be able to draw a pose like this in under 30 minutes. Also I'm really sorry for this phone picture. I'm not at my own place, so I'm without a scanner right now.

I can spot out a lot of mistakes here, but I'm not sure how to fix them. For example, the legs and neck are seriously wrong but I don't know where to start on fixing them. I'm also not sure if the torso is too long. I know the arm on the right side is too long, though. I'm shit with shoulders, so I'm not sure if they look alright or not.

Sorry for all of the text. I haven't been able to receive a good crit on any other art site I've been on, and /ic/ ripping me a new asshole years ago helped me get to where I was earlier. I'd just like to keep progressing.

I didn't really know what you were going for, so I proposed pink/red since you said you wanted to make her skin warmer. Don't think too deeply about it, just keep your palette that you have right now and work with pushing values. Here is a quick paintover to give you an idea. I made the lights lighter and the darks darker, while also adding structure to the face.

I think >>1801213 is also right

Everything is too long. She's like a praying-mantis-woman.

The gesture also looks pretty stiff and uncomfortable for what looks like it should be a relaxing position. Did you use a reference? You should.

Watch Proko's figure drawing videos. Anons may disagree, but I think they're solid and the most accessible.

They aren't really wrong, but you are drawing without goal.

>> No.1801264

>>1801243
you're not at the point where you should worry about stagnation yet.

you are also focusing too much on anatomy. when you talk about problems or spotting mistakes, you are talking nothing but anatomy.
..don't forget that there are other things that are more important than anatomy.
like gesture, or the ability to understand 3d structures. both are very basic things that you lack.

without gesture you will have a hard time making coherent poses.
and without 3d thinking you won't be able to progress in your anatomy studies anyway.

for now, focus on one minute gesture drawings. because 30 min is too much for something like that. don't waste your time. just draw a lot. focus on quantity.
