Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1788476

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Posted this on /a/ as well but

Can anyone here help me understand how to do layers?

I just started drawing. I noticed in all the youtube videos I watch that artists are able to color outside of the lines but it doesn't matter.

So is the process

1. Sketch (Also is it default a light blue/pink or is it something people just choose to help identify the trace lines?)

2.Add another layer to trace over it.

Now here is where it gets tricky for me.

Do you add layers for each body part?

Layer- trace hair

Layer- trace face

etc.?

1. sketch (you can chose whatever color you want, but make sure it's a) different color than your lineart and b) easy to see. I usually make my background grey and use a saturated green for sketching.
2. add a layer above for lineart
3. do the whole lineart in one layer (multiple layers for lineart come with experience, you don't need them now)
4. delete sketch
5. make a layer underneath for coloring. Most people use one layer for one color, so if you're gonna draw a butterfly vomiting a rainbow you'll need more layers.

>> No.1793936

>>1793901
It could be assumed that you have a brain. Use it.

Different layers would separate everything into a different sections, allowing you to limit your brush strokes to only that section, and thus giving more control. Drawing everything in one layer allows you to work quicker with less browsing through layers looking for the right thing.

Lineart should always be in 1 layer because there's literally no benefit to splitting it up, but you should be able to figure that out by 'thinking'.

That wasn't the point of the edit. It's not "you should do things exactly like this" but instead to present some elements that might help strengthen the image. First of all, fuck you man for not following even half of the corrections I made in the first redline. I attempted a paint over of your drawing to put in place the corrections I was trying to point out. As you can see, I'm awful at painting digitally, I don't give a fuck about the background, and trying to copy your style, but hopefully you get the gist. Your coloring/color choices aren't bad, but your rendering of form is. Not only are your bones/muscles in incorrect places, but they're rendered so strangely that they look somehow flat and round at the same time. I'm not sure how you even managed to accomplish that. Your faces also look extremely uncanny, and I tried to retain the stylization, while also rendering it as much as the rest of their bodies. It still looks like they're wearing kigurumi masks, but at least they're shaded correctly now.

When you're painting, use a fucking reference if you're not sure what something looks like. Start compiling reference images of buff ladies for your bodies, and look at photos of anime figures for your faces. Anime figures are a decent adaptation of something 2D to 3D so that you can get an idea of how form is supposed to work.

To be honest, I really don't even know why I'm bothering with this anymore, but I guess I'm THAT bored.

It's referring to the horizon line used in basic perspective. The quote is basically trying to say that to be able to draw anything without a reference, you need to be able to break down the human body into simpler shapes and forms (i.e. cylinders, boxes, etc), and then you need to know how to draw those simple shapes in perspective to the horizon line. Here's a quick example to try and explain it.

oh dear god i'm sorry senpai. I honestly have no idea how it could end up like that because I literally used your redline as a multiply layer over mine to check if the things were in place or not. i probably fucked up during therendering process.

i'n studying your paint over and it seems that i got too lost in the tiny details that i forget the vales of the overall form, looking at yours; i shaded every part as a single section rather than the whole thing as a single form.

i'm a little afraid to go back to references as that was part of the core of my "2d face 3d body" problem came from, but it's probably a matter of learning how to eventually apply it rather than blindly copying it...

yes that sounds about right, however color doesn't just disappear
have you ever read up on the natural frequencies and given frequencies of objects?

natural frequency is like the dna code of an object which we can break down to RGB. if you had previous knowledge from color theory you would know that in the additive color theory all colors combine to create white, and the subtractive theory to create black.that of which serve different purposes for mediums(so we only need to focus on the additive theory since our monitors deal with RGB.

the color code for white is 255(R),255(G),255(B), and for black 0,0,0. so we know that all objects have different codes of color that of which all three can be affected by light, so the codes range from all the colors in the visible spectrum which includes white, black and grey. it would be best to assume light not as a color but an event of intensity acted on the object.

Money was good enough when I was consistently working (not goofing off and being lazy) and had a roommate. Now, not so much. As a freelancer, you have to have a good work ethic and be able to constantly network with editors or have an agent to get you jobs.

The Pro side to being a Freelancer is a home studio and flexible hours (as long as you get your work done).

Comics can be good and entertaining to start out with, but you'll soon hit a pay ceiling and most likely move to a different career, storyboarding, concept art, having a Wall o' Prints at conventions...

So at your level do you think you could have stretched it out to full-time / liveable income, or would you definitely need a job on the side as well?

>> No.1796510

>>1796482
It can be a liveable wage if you keep yourself relevant. If one keeps their name out there, and prove that they're reliable and still producing good work, adjusting style as the new kid on the block changes the mainstream style, then it's quite possible. Many older artists may stay in the realm of the comic style, but switch gears to illustrating licensed characters, or doing licensing work for posters, magazines, etc.

If you are creative enough, you can write your own ticket like a Fred Perry, Adam Warren, or Phil Foglio and make your own properties, staying clear of the mainstream genres.

One can make a living at art, but you still have to keep in mind that it's work and you have to produce.

Forgive me ignorance but Is it just me or can almost nobody outside of japan draw manga that actually looks like authentic manga

Nobody bothers because there is no industry for manga outside of Japan. Also, what kind of instructions do you expect? I want to get very formal percise instruction in drawing authentic manga. The problem is when I go through google i'm swarmed with "mark criley" and other people who don't have manga drawing down at all trying to advertise their drawing classes etc

I'm new to all this but i've yet to find many artists who can draw manga that comes across as authentically done as the manga done by the pro artists in japan. Maybe ignorance or bias or both but thats how it feels

TL:DR how can I get instruction to get good like the professionals in japan without spending a buttload of money flying there

>I want to get very formal percise instruction in drawing authentic manga.

I don't think you really understand how this whole art thing actually works. What "precise instructions" are you expecting? You learn to draw, you study the fundamentals, you get good at perspective, you study the composition and panel layouts of comics / manga you feel are very strong and you copy artists whose stylistic choices you want to understand and incorporate into your own work. There is nothing else to it. There's no secret instruction that japanese master-mangaka teach their students at a hidden zen temple on top of Mt. Fuji that no whitu piggu is allowed to enter.

>> No.1796969

>>1796953
>Copy the style of manga artists you want your work to look like

No. I'm looking for a high quality of instruction that matches what the people go through in japan who got good at it. I want my own style from a delicate and hard earned understanding of the practice. This can be in any form from websites to vids or tutorials but I just have no clue how to find people who are providing this kind of instruction

What i'm getting at is, without a strong foundational plan to practice this, i'm not going to get anywhere no matter how much I train. I need to know the type of instruction/resources used by the people who got good at drawing manga to model my training to actually deliver the results i'm looking for. If my training isn't designed to bring those results then I couldn't get them no matter how insightful or creative or hard and long my practice sessions are because they're not designed to make that specific result happen

Practicing really hard isn't enough. It has to be quality practice

you either are unbelievably dumb or a pretty decent troll.

One last time: Japanese manga artists, just like any other competent artists study the FUNDAMENTALS of art. Most importantly, they study ANATOMY, PERSPECTIVE, COMPOSITION and PANEL LAYOUTS. Their STYLE is how they superficially present those fundamentals. Just go visit the art board on 2chan which is full of hentai artists and aspiring manga artists and look what they are doing. Ironically, they have even a bigger hard-on for Loomis than /ic/ does.

I have not yet begun a single day in dedicated quality practice to manga drawing or drawing in general or a dedicated study of the aspects of this process that would reveal ways to further my skill. But seeing results of the artists here and the very helpful community this is has really sparked a serious interest in drawing that I want to take to the highest level possible.

I do apologize for being frustrating due to the fact that I pretty much know nothing about the art world and have nothing but incorrect assumptions to go by.

If you've actually read and studied from Loomis you would know that he indeed used his method as it was most logical at the time; he is known for his divided ball and plane method as well as his knowledge on perspective and figure drawing.

Consider that manga is a japanese word for comic... and even a word they don't use that often (they use 'comic' most of the time). What they do is simply study figure drawing and some animation related stuff and you don't need to go to asia for that, you can go to an animation college in california and learn the same stuff those guys learn... I had classmates from korea and japan when I studied in san francisco, those guys wanted to work for miyazaki... there were 'mangakas' that studied at my college... The reason they look 'legit' instead of like the crappy imitation mango some do is because the ones you see as legit are the ones done by people who actually learned figure drawing and perspective and have a better grasp at simplification/stylization. I've seen manga drawn by japs that look as bad or worst that mark criley's stuff (and manga style stuff drawn by westerners that look professional because... well, it was drawn by professionals)

Also... don't bother drawing a 'manga' if you are not asian yourself... People that like manga don't care for non-japanese comics, they might like your artwork and buy it as posters or prints or stickers or whatever, but won't be reading what you write simply because you aren't japanese even though they are learning to draw manga themselves (I know, fuck weaboos right?)
