If you want to draw from life but there's no willing model around, drawing yourself is one of the best alternatives. At least you can reasonably pose yourself the way you want to.

It also helps you to concentrate at the model more than the paper itself, as looking away from the mirror too much will throw you off.

OP here. I went straight oil pastel without construction lines. Practice blind/semi-blind contour drawings - so many people hate doing this, but I couldn't stress this enough to beginners.

Been doing it for three years, and I never allow myself to think I'm beyond beginner level. In fact, I'm going to consider myself a beginner until the day I die, even as I draw/paint/sculpt everyday.

Oil pastels are a bitch to use for quick life drawings, I only got back to using em recently.

Blind contour drawings would be a remedy for someone who has poor linequality; they chicken scratch or aren't making descriptive marks in general. It's not just some catch all for improvement. the previous poster was referring to doing portraits in a beginners book, and theres nothing blind contour drawing exercises will solve, specifically.

Contour drawing is an approach in drawing from life. Blind contour is an exercise that you described. Doing actual contour drawings (semi-blind and cross contour) doesn't just help with the "line quality", it helps you understand the flow and form of the subject - allowing you the hand-eye coordination where you can almost imagine running your fingers on the subjects skin as you draw them.

Blind contour drawing is an exercise to help synchronize the hand to that of what the eye is following

Semi-blind contour is what most talented pros do in life-drawing - they only look at their paper less than 5% of the time, while the rest of the time they look at the model while drawing.

There's nothing wrong with prescribing blind contour drawings to beginners - people I know who embraces it all the way to being pro artists are at a different level from people that keep insisting on construction lines in a life drawing session.

if you follow the hairline from one ear left up to the right you can see that something isn't right. the face has some good flesh tones and detail in it but the ears and hair is where you lose me.
more details also the forehead what happend there? glasses and eye brows - you're not fan of hair, are you? maybe other technike/brush for hair? don't agree with background. the white on the edges is for perspective but not well executed.

the bulb of the nose doesn't come forward, maybe you should darken the value around it.
The skin around the lips is pretty muddy. I'm not an expert in color so I don't know how to fix that, sorry :/

there was a lot of lens distortion in the photo that I tried to compensate for but yeah it still looks a little weird. And a lot of it like the hair and ears is just blocked in so I can come back to it later because my process/allocation of detail is fucked.

I don't know a ton about digital but I think you should play around with your brush settings, something about the way your lower opacity marks overlap makes this unappealing dappled texture that makes the whole thing look unpolished. Overall though looks good esp. the lighting, but the ears are a bit too big and the mouth and right side of the nose look a little flat. And you could probably push your shadows a little darker in places too

If you have access to a mirror I highly recommend using that over a camera.
A photo will have distorted colours, values and proportions depending on the quality of it and it makes seeing forms a bit more tricky. I understand It works like a mirror because it's a webcam video but a mirror would be infinitely better.

Haha "vagina race" got me for a second, just because of the latter part. The only mirror I have is in the bathroom where I brush my teeth. I guess I'm not a makeup girl.

And yes a mirror would have given me more accurate colors. Somehow I decided to "touch up" with some cool blues and it turned shitty. Sometimes you gotta know when to stop fixing I guess.

As other people have said, the green does show up too strong, especially next to the ear with more earth tone palette. My suggestion would be toning it down with an overlay layer of a darker shade of your midtone (reddish brown?) So it looks more like reflected light instead of green stuff on part of your face. If you want something more interesting/less realistic then add some green to the ear and hair, that would give more overall harmony to the piece.

Otherwise I think the structure and proportion of the face is believable and look pleasant. Question: did you plan it out first or just jumped straight into painting?
