Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1786279

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Somewhere along the way through touch ups, lining and rendering I feel like my drawings lose their "life".

Any tips for preventing this? It's like the longer I work on something the worse it looks.

Trying to get somewhere with this and failing

>> No.1788627

>>1788614
What I'm beginning to find is that during the construction phase, you always lose life, emotion, and feeling. It seems the only way to get by this is doing what they do in animation drawings and simply go for truth rather than construction, anatomy, persepective.

Where the gesture and the final drawing are one. Sure when you ink it you'll lose a little life most of the time, but it's a lot less when coldly calculating everything and making it a correct. I wonder, if the slight imperfections in our art is what makes them unique, and interesting.... Perhaps 2 or 3 forms and a line of action are good enough when it comes to creating a successful drawing.

Of course, this is all just my theory from watching certain artists I like, and I do still believe a solid foundation of anatomy, form, perspective, gesture, and construction must be built... but when going for life and stylization, I almost wonder if the calculations and construction do more harm than good. That not trusting yourself and having confidence in your skills makes it look a little lifeless...

Anyways, I'm rambling on. Just a thought that I've been playing around with.

I really like your dedication anon. I think its really great you tried your best and even finished this piece. I think, however, it was a little doomed in the construction phase. Your very first part of construction and creating a drawing is to do a gesture within a composition. The composition is pretty simple so it can't be considered that bad but keep in mind its kind of like "anime girl standing there" style, its just a little lackluster. But I think that you would make the MOST improvement if you fixed the girl's gesture.
Realy I don't know why she has her hand on her eye like that, or why she has two fingers out. Its very unnatural. Also arm is twisting at a very awkward angle.
I think that the best course of action for you on your way to improvement would be to study gesture drawing. Just go on pixel lovely's gesture tool and do lots of 30 second + a few 10 minute gestures and you'll improve a lot. (The OCOTOPUS'S gesture is really good actually. Try to think more like that, natural and full of life)
One more thing- The feature's on her face arn't matching up correctly. Try the Loomi's head construction method. If you can't do that, just try putting lines down BEFORE you draw the features. Don't just freehand them one by one.
All in all its not a bad piece, I like your choice of colors a lot, enjoy the octopus and it has my curiosity.

The legs are my biggest issue with that picture, they look really bad and confusing, it's almost as if she is just raising her right leg at a broken angle. I also think her left leg's thigh is too long.

The chair doesn't seem to fit her pose that well, maybe try to turn it slightly to the viewer. Her right upper arm looks too short. I'd consider redrawing the connection between her left arm and shoulder, and the way that would bend over the chair.

Sorry for sloppy edit. Learn more about the color and light in the context of painting. It would help to define a light source instead of pillow shading. The value range of your colors is currently very small and thus the painting looks flat. Push those values and as a reminder, colors usually do not shade with black.

What are you? A faggot?

Joking aside... why does it matter? An artist honestly looking for help should not be turned away. Regardless of content you can just hide the post. I don't like the stuff either but I'll respect their right to post especially since this is a NSFW board.

The probable answer to your question though is since this is an anonymous image board one can post without the stigma attached to it. A pretty big reason why 4chan is anonymous in the first place.

>> No.1791184

>>1791181
Yet on an art board that later point of yours tends to hold lesser meaning, as style is recognized and an anon becomes distinct not from a name but the content of their posts. Then again we're also a smaller board.

i dont totally get the anonymous thing, i think any forum is as anon as you want it to be. the reason i personally come here is for a quick answer to something where i know a lot of people are about art. other forums can generally be more slow or certain art subject oriented, here its like the ask jeeves of art forums.

>> No.1791200

>>1791184
True, it saddens me whenever people attack an artist instead of the artwork. I don't participate in those shitstorms. Attacker or defender it's all shitflinging in the end.

>>1791188
I assume those other forums require registration so with an online handle, reputation/etc. builds up over time and people will definitely begin to change the way they communicate with one another. If you say something stupid, that sticks with you as long as you keep that online handle. Making a new account all the time isn't too beneficial as longer time posters will eventually squash newer ones. New users may have their points disregarded and mods might abuse power to silence opponents.

When anonymous only the content of the post matters, not who they poster is, what they have done, or said in the past. Everything is judged based on the content of the present post.

I'm not saying anonymity is the panacea because it has it's own set of problems I don't need to mention, but it's definitely a fresh change. Other forums have their own place as well, use whichever one you prefer. Just don't expect everything to conform to what you like especially with anonymity concerned.

Since you say you only come for quick answer usually, I recommend having an open mind and leaving behind your judgement of what's considered normal every time you come here.

That's my theory on the matter at least. TL;DR my bad.

>> No.1791203

>>1791200
there are many hentai art boards where users would happily judge someones work, and probably not worry about semantics. i know coming on 4chan is well, 4chan, but this after all is mostly just an art forum, and i just still find it odd why there are so many of those posts. and i know you mention having an open mind, but little boys and such being raped just isnt within what i think is any sort of normal, not a matter of open mind. yea one say say its 4chan deal with it, but that doesnt address the arguement very directly

>> No.1791220

>>1791203
Normal is relative which is why I suggested leaving that judgement behind. Same as for what's problematic for you is not for others which is why it doesn't address what you consider a problem directly since it's not considered that by others (kind of circular reasoning). What you say about other websites is likely true, I don't think you're wrong about that. Though with the nature of anonymity, one can worry less about mods/past/reputation/etc ever becoming a problem. At least that's how I consider it.

Once again the content in question is not my cup of tea but I'll respect the right to post it, might even give critique, and hide if I dislike it much. That's what I consider having an open mind. This is all I'll say on the subject now since this is getting meta/off-topic and I should be drawing instead of possibly starting a shitstorm.

>...why the fuck does /ic/ attract all the weird ass artists...
I hope your original question has been answered.

TL;DR People are different, anonymity can help.

>> No.1791231

We are the first generation that could share all of our fantasies with like minded people due to the miracle of the internet. No matter what, from birth, there's always someone who will say "Yeah, I agree that's pretty hot" to every fetish that will ever exist from now on.

Little cartoon boys being raped by horses was deviancy to our parents, slightly weird to us, and will be vanilla casual shit to our kids.

>> No.1791234

>>1791203
But that's the whole point, anon. Most people think it's not normal to draw the kinds of things we draw here. Yes, even on a hentai board. But when we're all anonymous there's no such thing as personal insults (even if a faggot anonymously insults you personally, it's more easily to disregard them, because it might be a top tier artist or a fat non-artist neckbeard just as easily, so it's safe to assume the latter). On a non-anonymous board people see both your opinions AND your art, so the opinions of bad artists are often disregarded even if they are right. And vice versa - shitty opinions of popular artists are listened to. Look at what happens to mostly everyone who attaches their name to everything here - lefty, teal (and greydeath is off to a great start here), but mikufag and rinfag are only known when they post a drawing in their signature style. I know both of them post without images too, but since they post anonymously there's no reason to attack them personally - what would most definitely happen if they posted with a name. Same for weird ass shit porn - nobody will disregard your opinion if you draw these things. It's great. The only "forum" I go to nowadays is 4chan (I've tried non-anonymous forums too, trust me) because I like the anonymity so much.

Also, if you get popular, it's because of your artwork, not your opinions. Mostly people try to get popular by licking everyone's asshole and saying great things to them. That's just 60% of a normal forum and we really don't have it here. I love it. If that's not for you (and for most people it isn't) go to a hugbox forum of your choice. It will be better for everyone.

-how to manga books have guidelines and proportions.
-look and study good artist on how they draw, solve stylization problems and how they approach unusual angles.
-get some figurines and dolls if you can
-get 3d posing programs and load your favorite MOE waifu, even just rotating the camera around you tend to see 3d and think 3d.
-continue studying the fundamentals on how to construct and manipulate forms.

The guy's face on the bottom right looks really unpleasant. Make his eyes smaller/farther apart, and make them more evenly sized, or learn how to draw different facial angles. Everyone's hands are fucked up, look at your hands in a mirror if you need a reference that bad.

The guy in the back looks like an afterthought. You can't even see the rest of his body behind everyone else's, it's like he's a floating torso. He's in the very back, his face isn't showing, and you displayed almost none of his body. He has so little emphasis compared to everyone else, that you might as well just take him out.

The girl's right arm (our left) is foreshortened terribly. Why is she standing on everyone else's feet? You also managed to fuck up her shoelaces. If drawing criss crossing lines is too difficult for you, you should just stick with laces that go straight across.

The composition is sort of diagonal, but your eyes are lead to the back of his guy's head, who looks really half-assed. These people aren't planted on anything, so you have the freedom to change scales of the characters and the composition to make it more interesting. I think this is fanart for a game that I've never played, so I can't say anything about which characters to emphasize since I don't know who they are.

Sorry for the sloppy edit to the figure on the right, changes I believe would suit the picture better. You seem to have trouble making the details of the forms on the face in tandem with each other into something appealing. Also I have the impression you have an odd choice of hues (things like skin) and extremely saturated colors. Or perhaps you don't seem to be able to use your palette well. Might just be my imagination though. Other people seemed to have critiqued enough already. Anyways, feel free to ignore whatever you don't like.

Riddle me this /ic/

If the nose is just a dot how would it account for the clipping of the eye that's farther away when viewing a face in 3/4 view above the horizon line?

You use value to seperate it instead of a line

Tried digging in the imgur album, but I guess I was mistaken. A lot of his heads do show clipping though.

It's supposed to imply the shape of the nose without having to put an ugly line through the face and making the character look like they have some kind of jew nose

Hope to make it to your level one day... the only thing that seems off is the hands seem a bit too small?

Don't bother to render something that's wrong like that, you won't get good that way. Do that side pose literally 100 times with a pencil and then look to start painting it. You shouldn't think, okay, I'll paint something THEN think about anatomy. Anatomy first always.

Hello, a sloppy edit for you. The forms of the body should be more accurately conveyed or maybe you just haven't rendered it enough for the forms to be evident. If it's the latter case then my edit won't be too useful (especially since the it's off model with more mass for emphasis and few of it's own problems). Either way I hope it helps in some way.

>>1793624
That depends on the questions you ask yourself and the answers you arrive at.
If you think that hand is too small then just make relative measurements to find out or make it bigger and see if it's better.
Otherwise the form of the hand isn't defined as clearly defined as it could be so it appears smaller than the mass really is.

Can't say I agree with you. I like the edit better. Even if it's anime art it always looks better with correct proportions

How to get better at basics? I've been drawing pokemons to get better understanding of form. Anyone has any better ideas? Also, I can't draw straight lines for shit on a wacom tablet. Anyone else has this problem? How to draw smooth confident lines?

some more. I thought pokemons would be good to practice dividing complicated shapes in basic geometrical shapes.
