Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1781771

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

>those lines

Holy shit

Anyway, the stage-right elbow is too far down (the elbow lands at about where the ribcage ends) and the legs are too short. One thing to remember is that both thigh and calf ending/beginning at the knee are around as long as the body from shoiulder to hip is. When a person sits on their ass on the ground with their knees pressed against their body their knees will come up to just under their shoulders.

1. Your chicken scratch is mostly a skill/ tablet familiarity problem right now. You don't have to grind line exercises for a month, but do try to practice more line economy. One wobbly line looks better than a really hairy mess.

2.You might want to look into Paint Tool Sai or MangaStudio if you don't already have them. They have a stabilizer that helps those afflicted by index card sized tablets and tiny desks.

3. Your picture is not that bad, so don't be discouraged. Make sure the hip and shoulder lines go to the same vanishing point (her right leg should be higher. If we're looking down at her, her right shoulder should be higher too).

>> No.1786440

4. Always try to draw the hands and feet. It's more noticeable when they're missing than when they're shitty. Plus, you will save yourself a lot of pain later if you commit to drawing them in every picture now.

Not what I'm saying at all. Also the 10 drawings posted in this thread is hardly stylization, more like carbon copy. But that is another tangent.

Let me see if I can spell it out for you and others here...

You draw WHITE girls in stereotypical Asian fashion i.e Sailor seifuku

Bad enough that:
1) composition not interesting (usually on a white background)
2) does not convey a story
3) lacks style (ironic for the stylization thread, right?)
4) and worst of all you as an American or from another country completely throw away your own heritage, pretending you are drawing Japanese characters when in fact they are white, succumbing to generic drawings when you have a full array of new fresh ideas using your own culture using the anime style

Korean artists draw roots from their culture, so do Taiwanese and Chinese.

This >>1786446 is a carbon copy; it shows no sense of pride from where he is from, he decides to draw school girl #358509305. Why not draw your high school crush in different set of clothes that isn't a sailor uniform? No you want to pretend you grew up in Japan.

I spotted a ton of bone and muscle problems, and tried to explain them for you (also moved on top of white to make it easier to read). I've given you a really long lecture before on studying muscle groups and bone structure, and I'm pretty much going to keep saying the same thing over and over again. Before you can tackle muscles, you have to understand the human skeleton. Muscles wrap around, and move every single bone in your body, so you have to understand how those bones function before you can even begin to muscle out your characters.

When you start a sketch, it's a really good idea to draw the skull, spine, rib cage, and pelvis. Those are the biggest bone landmarks, and will dictate the rest of your drawing. Once you have those down, then it's easier to attach other bones and muscles to them.

The clavicles of both girls are fucked up, and I think you should study them more. Either that, or your perspective is wrong (I'm too lazy to make corrections for that right now, but if you really want me too, I can try to redline your drawing again while focusing exclusively on perspective).

I noticed that your centerline was practically nonexistent, so you should really make sure that you establish that in your sketch so that every single muscle you draw afterwards isn't completely wrong. I tried to explain where the abs should start, and where the back muscles end. Also, I outlined a few muscles on the arm for you, since you were contouring in some weird areas.

>Seirei Tsukai
just googled that. it's all loli-moe type of stuff. none of them look white at all.
they look white to you because you are white and your world is white-centric. japanese people don't see that many white people. and their minds aren't filled with white people.

it depends on the artist, but most styles are derived from many different things (even animals). there are a few artist that use western features more than others, like the jojo author, but the styles you are talking about are mostly a mix.
the hair colors are different simply because of variety. you don't want to be limited to shades of black and brown.

1) did you know?: if you show a stick figure to asian people in an asian nation, they will assume that the stickman is asian. this is what you're doing right now. drawn characters are representative, it's abstract. rather than saying "they all look white", it's more like they all look the SAME.

2) decent shaped eyes, and decent shaped noses are a preferred feature in other countries as well, not only for white people. i'll post a few photos of nice looking women in comparison later.

you're barely scraping the bottom of this issue. believe me, i've been through this. it's not as clear cut as you make it out to be, and it also depends on the artist.

(cont.)

You also draw the girls' stomachs completely flat, and almost concave. Nobody has stomachs like that. Everyone has skin, some muscle, and in most females' cases, fat. When they're sitting, or bending in a certain direction, their skin/fat/muscle will inevitably fold. I find that simplifying torsos into a cylinder helps me figure out the bending/stretching thing. Also, studying muscles/photos of actual people will help you understand how bodies look when bent in different directions.

I tried to explain things, but my writing is absolute shit, and my thought processes probably aren't being conveyed very well, so if you're still unclear on anything, just tell me and I'll try to explain it better. You're not doing too badly, and I think you can really get better.

go more bold with the lighting and shadows. practice with clear bright light and simplify the form when you are coloring it.
Heres an example you can see crisp solid shadows. Make your edges hard in the correct places and soft in other places and use a references if you cannot picture it in your mind.

For now i think your biggest problem is light and shadow. go do harsh single direction lighting and it will give you more confidence. (sorry if my post is unclear)

found this post that explains pretty much the same shit as i posted.
quote:

If I draw a stick figure, most Americans will assume that it is a white man. Because to them that is the Default Human Being. For them to think it is a woman I have to add a dress or long hair; for Asian, I have to add slanted eyes; for black, I add kinky hair or brown skin. Etc.

The Other has to be marked. If there are no stereotyped markings of otherness, then white is assumed.

Americans apply this thinking to Japanese drawings. But to the Japanese the Default Human Being is Japanese! So they feel no need to make their characters “look Asian”. They just have to make them look like people and everyone in Japan will assume they are Japanese – no matter how improbable their physical appearance.

end quote.

you just don't get it do you. of course it is less than with whites, but that difference doesn't actually matter to the japanese. it only would once you compare them. and they don't. they see japanese people everywhere. to them, a japanese human being is "normal".

you say
>they have smaller noses
but they say
>they have larger noses
do you understand the difference? the difference is the viewpoint.

have you realized that when they do want to absolutely make sure you understand it's a white person, they give them blond hair and blue eyes, every single time?

They say to draw with your shoulder so you can get bold, confident lines since your wrist has a much smaller range of motion. There's nothing wrong for using your wrist and fingers for small detail work but you will suffer if you use your wrist exclusively.

Every eroge in existence am I right? left is 音無 宙美. Or what about toshino kyouko? For the last time I don't want to keep posting, they are drawn to look like white people. Have you heard of the 80/20 rule? That is adult sized female anime characters with an 80% adult figure and 20% baby face? Purely Kiss is an example. notice the color schemes. lots of other other hair and eye color is present as well. i said this before, but some people don't want to be restricted to shades of brown or black.

just think about it for one second. look at the leftmost girl with the black hair. imagine she is the only person in the image.
is she asian, or is she white?
if she is asian, what makes you think she is? she has the same face and the sams skincolor.

You say they have the same face. There is a foreigner among that set. The skull features resemble that of a Caucasoid for both the girl in black hair and blonde beauty, however the black haired girl is of Japanese descent.

Now there is the argument that all the girls to the left have similar hair color but that is for animation and the artist isn't sitting there saying to himself "Oh this girl has pink hair but in reality she has black hair because she is Japanese, yeah". It is after all just fantasy.

I had to lower the opacity a lot so that you can read my handwriting. I tried to make a lot of corrections, but my formal muscle understanding isn't exactly top notch. I think the back and the torso should be fairly correct, but the arm diagram might be a little inaccurate. Either way, for the arm I tried to make a simpler diagram for you to look at, since human arms have a shitload of muscles in them and it's impossible to study all of them. I drew the ones that I know best, and the ones you can usually pick out in a person's arm, just by looking at it. I also tried to make corrections to your shoulders/clavicle area. You definitely need to study those more, look at some photos and try to get an idea of how they sit under the person's skin. The clavicle and scapula are how a person's arms are attached to their rib cage. They connect the deltoid to the arm, so that you can even move them at all. Remember that all bones and muscles have a function, and if you can remember what they are, I find that they really help you remember the bones and muscles.

All in all, not too bad, could certainly use some work. You have a lot of the muscles down, just not their placement or proportion quite correct. And for the 50th time, study bones. Keep a reference photo of a skeleton or something on you, so that you can connect each muscle to the appropriate bone they lie on.

You drew her pelvis a mile away from her rib cage, and her arms don't reach past her hootch. Her left shoulder (our right) sticks out less than her right shoulder (our left), despite her left shoulder being farther away, and pointing back into space. Also, her left upper arm (our right) almost reaches her belly button. Also, her legs are really uneven, and ridiculously far apart.

>> No.1787735

>>1787701
Take a quick look at how the pecks and lats attach to the arm before you go any further. Your arm is all fuckered up because of your muscular systems on the torso. This needs to be corrected before final lay-down of lines. That was the first thing that stuck out to me.

Also, your pelvis has too many rough edges - especially for a female. Females store their fat around the pelvis, resulting in the more hour-glass figure, which divulges into the muffin and cupcake tops. Until they're several overweight, the pelvis still exists - and when they're underweight/overly fit, they severely start to lose the figure. Also, abdominals taper.

Focus on the arm for now, though. The others will be easier to correct with practice.

Sorry for butting in as I always do, but when a mangaka wants to differentiate the races of characters, they do it pretty well already.

Example 1: Kaiji. You can obviously see that the characters are japanese and also the anime is taking place in Japan and it's pointed out regularly.

Example 2: Persona 3 (game with anime style). The person on the left is japanese while the person on the right is french. You can tell it not only by his blonde hair and blue eyes, but also by his facial features.

While in other anime presented in the examples in previous posts it doesn't really matter if the characters are asian or white. If in the context they are japanese, then they are japanese. If there's no context (like in naruto - the anime doesn't even happen on planet Earth for all you know) it doesn't matter. Seinen and josei manga artists tend to draw their characters more japanese and realistic. Shonen and shojo manga artists tend to draw them like aliens with no apparent relation to humans as we know them. And no, the western look is not popular in Japan. Up until a few months ago, the most fashionable thing for girls to be were traditional japanese cute and childlish, but now because of the rising popularity of many half asian half white celebreties it's stylish to look like half asian half white. I know, weird, right?

This is last resort conclusions when you realize you are wrong. I've read it all man, every single excuse.

The fact still stands the boy to the left is drawn with white features in mind as if he gone through plastic surgery, a common practice with asians. I don't think I said ever about "what the script says", I'm clearly stating the artstyle, which changes periodically due to otaku culture influenced mostly in the west, that stays true to Disney no matter what you or the rice nibbler in nippon says (although they already admit it by default).

When using a photo as a reference, you're supposed to break it down to see where the bones/muscles/how they look under skin, and THEN use it as a guide for your drawing. Unless you already know those fundamentals, you're going to make a ton of mistakes when trying to copy your reference because you don't actually know what's there, or what kind of anatomical landmarks you're looking for to replicate in your drawing. Also, photos are photoshopped all of the time, and can be incredibly inaccurate anatomically. Photo references should help you place where a few things are, but shouldn't be followed very strictly in my opinion.

>> No.1788232

I'm the person who did the corrections, and to be perfectly honest, this is all knowledge from a semester of life drawing I took at community college while I was bored. I don't know if other life drawing classes at other community colleges emphasize anatomy and bone structure, but it's definitely something you can study on your own. Muscles and bones seem intimidating because there are so many, but in actual drawing application, you only need to know the main muscle groups, and a few bones. My understanding is quite vague, but it's enough so that when I see a photo of a buff guy flexing, I can spot what muscles are supposed to be there. You can definitely learn it in a year or two, you just need to have a solid understanding of gesture, proportions, and perspective.

that article talks about animation, a subject you understand even less.

like i said, i may make some drawings for you later.
everything revolves around the stick figure example. it explains the entire issue. now if you would just scrape your remaining braincells together and try to understand what it is about. it's not that fucking complicated.
later i'll show you what japanese stylized art would look like if they based it completely on western people.

This article?
>Julian Abagond is a middle-class, West Indian, New Yorker; he is also a computer programmer who enjoys ancient Greek.

Sure but does he know anime thoroughly extensively as I do? No.

You take the word of some no name journalist as fact? Don't you see it's a G̲u̲e̲s̲t̲ ̲b̲l̲o̲g̲g̲e̲r̲? Even I can go on there and write an article and post it there (and I will after this thread is purged). That's like taking the word off some kotaku journalist moron when they don't know what the they're talking about.

You are so retarded you don't even know. Go and make your doodles, using what this no-name journalist told you because you can't think for yourself.

it's actually my own opinion. based off my own experiences and drawings as well. (which is why i'm the only one arguing with you to this extent anyway)
i actually found that article WHILE we were arguing yesterday. they just happen to make very similar points (because they are arguing from the same source, the stick figure).
as it turns out, anyone with a brain would come to a similar conclusion.

only sheltered dumb fucks like you would assume that japanese constantly have their minds on white people when their nation, their daily lives, friends and the people they see are nothing but japanese people.

>Sure but does he know anime thoroughly extensively as I do? No.
but do you understand anything about drawing, AT ALL? obviously not.
my opinion is based on way more than just
>they "look" like white features (to me)!
your lousy "expertize" doesn't compare.

the truth is, anime characters are based of all finds of ideals.
to give you an example: HEIGHT.
not only western people value height and a good build, everyone in the world values that. as a FEATURE, it is valueable regardless of race. now people in the west are much taller on average. but that doesn't actually mean anything to japanese people. whites are rare, they are like aliens if they do see one. this is exactly what i wanted to say with >>1787374

it's about having different VIEWPOINTS.
when you see a drawn eye, you recall a image you have seen, or a certain friend/family member etc, but when an asian person sees it, THEY WILL SEE THEIR OWN FRIENDS, FAMILIES and whover looks close to the drawn picture.
and that's especially true when it comes to those abstract generic VN styles you've been mentioning.

>the truth is, anime characters are based of all finds of ideals

The truth is anime characters are based on what is selling in otaku culture. You draw Japanese cartoons but don't know a thing about their industry.

There is a loli season (i.e 80% of the anime aired that season is loli), there is a catastrophic season (i.e most anime aired that season is post-apolitical) and so on.
>ut do you understand anything about drawing, AT ALL?
You keep bringing this up because you are getting really mad that I'm not posting my art.

>when you see a drawn eye, you recall a image you have seen blah blah
Now you're really talking out your ass.

Your opinion completely discarded, don't even bother doodling those doodles, have a good day. Peace.

you have to be that /jp/ faggot. didn't know jack shit about drawing, but talked endlessly about the anime industry.
but we are talking about "style" here. you don't know what goes through an artists head when they create. or what they consider. it's not a s simple as "trying to draw caucasians". like i said, real caucasians appear very "foreign" (in every sense ofthe word) to the average japanese
i said this before, it's about ideals. you try to draw some kind of ideal. ideally, japanese people try to draw the "ideal japanese person", and that is still ways off from just "white". understand the difference.

look, i'm more of a manga guy, so i came across more different styles than you ever will. if you at least used different examples, i'd be more willing to concede. but as it is, you're completely mental. that vague generic style is a perfect example for the "stick figure".
blonde hair/blue eyes is an obvious sign of a caucasian, but none of the other traits are such. a girl with pink hair and green eyes isn't trying to be white, period.

you can't make a single point as to why such a girl should be considered white.
>large eyes don't mean anything just because caucasians think they have "larger" eyes BY COMPARISON.
>"white" skin doesn't mean anything just because caucasians have "whiter" skin BY COMPARISON.
>even the upturning nose doesn't mean anything whatsoever because of the simple fact that the lines flows better.
you don't understand anything about this issue at all. these artists aren't always directly trying to draw real people. there are many styles that take more caucasian features, but that is definitely not the truth for the ones you are talking about.
