I would never tell anyone not to utilize a tool to better their drawings, measuring is a great way to establish proportions when you first begin a drawing but you shouldn't use it as a crutch. Work on developing an eye for proportions.

And as far as what methods to use for construction I would say go with whatever you feel comfortable with and gets you results. Personally I like to use the crazy art teacher method of imagining running my fingers over the form as I draw contours.

No he isn't, because posting in shitty generals isn't a fucking rule. These "spammy" threads will still exist because they are not against the rules. I'd like to get into oil painting. I've never painted before nor can I draw very well, but Iv If been watching bob Ross and other tutorials and it seems really fun. I was thinking of buying a starter kit and working on some landscapes, but my friend who is much more artistically inclined than me says I should get the basics of sketching down first and then move to watercolors. Is this good advice? Should I not try to jump into oil painting? The tutorials don't look so hard, though I'm sure it's not easy.

>> No.1785458

Drawing is the base. You might find the tutorials for oil painting easy but they'll mostly deal with specific painting techniques instead of the basics like perspective and colour theory. For landscapes perspective is a must and since you'll be painting, values and composition will come in hand.

Start with the basics, skipping things now could cripple you later on.

The first step to getting better faster is having a routine of practice that is superior to most others.

There is little mention on these boards or with really any hobby or craft in general of carefully creating a superior plan of improvement that would purposely improve you very quickly

I see so much of "Just do this random exercise. Just draw something. Etc"

What about targeting your weaknesses in the drawing processs from qualified critical eyes and creating routines devised to get those weaknesses figured out. Things like this.

>> No.1786796

>>1786787
If you're still learning proportionality you NEED a reference. Even seasoned artists struggle to get good proportions without a reference; Michaelangelo used live figures when he was painting.
What you've done is learned how to draw "a face". You know roughly what shapes = nose, what line directions show contours etc etc. You have something that's recognisably a face. But you're not going to improve in skill until you look at real faces and spend a long time drawing them.
How long did this take you? I want you to try drawing a face (not even shading, just basic linework) and I want you to use a reference, and I want you to spend at least an hour drawing the reference. Not drawing "a face", but genuinely looking at the shapes and relationships between them.

>> No.1786797

>>1786787
Ok, first of all, you really need to start practising with a reference so you end with drawing symbols (You can see it clearly in the eyes).

Check Proko's video on drawing hair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHewz3JbKrQ

And finally, the hatching needs to follow the form of the object, the face has curves, its not polygonal at all.

>> No.1786826

>>1786823
Anatomywise not always, one example is the ears. The bottom of the nose usually is in line with the bottom of the ear (lobe) and the eyebrowns are in line with the top of the ear. That measure is not exactly precise but is a good refeerence. Since some anime styles use big as fuck eyes, the proportion of the ears can ger big too, so if you want to get a kind of realistic approach, check the measures of the head. "Drawing the Human Head" by Burne Hogarth has some guidelines if you are interested in approaching a realistic style.

No problem, anon. Just have in mind that studying from nature/reality can help you in a long run.

Regarding the perspective, check the eyes, since they are in line, that can help you with perspective, and more when doing anime stylized characters.

He's saying that the proportions are off, kinda like the Colossal Titan. Check some references, anon.

The length from the palm of your hand is similar to the length from your chin to your hairline, usually.

The sternocleidomastoid (That muscles from your neck) connects from the back of your ear to your clavicle, the one in the drawing is floating and going nowhere.

Arms are thicker and deltoids bigger too.

It's not a bad attempt, and you've got the general shape correct, you're just off on the proportions and some of the more complex areas. Loomis is a better of the two for proportions as I don't think Hampton really touches on it and more expects you to grasp it purely from eye. That being said, I strongly dislike Loomis' 8/7.5 head tall crap, but that's more personal preference, and it's still a decent method to work off,

When I was going through Hampton I remember drawing almost every single figure on every page, and then doing my own variations of a slightly different angle next to them. This really pushed up my mileage and later on you can instinctively grasp proportions straight away. It does take a bit more time and can be tedious, but if you have the concentration and motivation it's a very effective method.

My other suggestion is to strongly consider working with pencil and paper instead of tablet. Whenever I'm learning something I always find that I progress faster doing it on paper, and I feel as though I can go through more things faster. Pen tablet surfaces can be a bit slippery and you have to constantly adjust your canvas when you start a new figure. My Hampton sketchpad is around somewhere and it's jammed with figures, gestures, anatomy studies, etc. because the process was so much faster. I suppose this is more personal preference, but I still strongly recommend you give it a shot.

Anyway, good luck bud and keep it up.

Top Left - obligatory shit faces (work on these tomorrow)

Top Middle - the prisma color sucked, it was too slow, and could keep up with the line speed

Bottom left 2 - the pigma micro was much faster, but incredibly thin, it was hard to emphasize some of the lines

Right 2 - the Japanese pentel was very fast, but kinda thick, so I couldn't get any detail out of it.

Not much in a quick sketch or gesture. I feel like my shapes and placement aren't accurate enough to consider anything besides the angles, tilts, and directions of smaller shapes. How do you usually proceed? How do you break it down and when and how do you analyze perspective?

This picture is an example, I feel like I start inaccurately and the rest becomes pretty hopeless. Even boxing it in as I go along just confuses me. It's only at this point that I might throw in a confident ribcage and pelvis shape and then build on those, but then I still had a useless gesture phase.

When you can draw from your imagination, silly. When what you have on your paper looks more or less like what you are thinking then, shit, bob's your uncle.

The way I look at it is when you are fresh and starting out then you should make it a 9/1 ratio where 90% of what you are drawing is academics working with form, perspective and gesture and the rest of the 10% is whatever you wanna draw applying what you've learned. As you get more proficient in your mastery of the basics then the ratio starts slowly shifting to where your mastery begins to show in your personal works.

I can't tell you exactly how that ratio will progress for you since everyone is different but just don't forget to draw for fun.

You can start right now, dumbass.

Unless you are absolutely-fucking terrible, you shouldn't shoot down your imagination just because you don't think it will turn out wrong.

Take a few minutes to have FUN and draw WHATEVER even if it's SHIT so that, when you are finally good, your creativity doesn't end up a stunted mess.

Adding to this Anon, the best way to learn more efficiently is actually applying your studies to shit you want to draw. Only doing studies (or mainly studies) is only going to do so much.

For example, I like to draw superheroes using the figure drawing and anatomy knowledge I've learned, with some photo reference. I construct the figure using imagination, and if I ever get stuck/feels wrong I go back to my Hampton/Hogarth/whatever and check.

First time working on landscapes. Still far from done, and more of an experiment.

Si far, I understand that it is not meant to be as detailed as figures, with simple, wide strokes for the background doing, while the foreground takes a little bit more importance.

Then there's tones and values, which gives more shape to the picture.

And then there's stuff like perspective, lightning and shadows to give it life.

And then there's Hard Lines, Soft Lines and Lost Lines which I don't fully understand and would like a brief explanation of, if you would.

Is there anything else?

Loomis' methods are meant to become natural and automatic, given your own methods and modifications.

proportions are a bit off
helmet is the wrong shape if you measure from the nose in the refrence its the same distance from the nose to the side and from the nose to the bottom lip off the helmet, in your drawing its way shorter from the nose to the side then from the nose to the bottom.

eyes are to small, bottom lip isn't large enough + shading on the face needs to be a bit darker overall + shading on the lips and nose is off e.g. you have a massive light patch on the nostril where their is a dark patch in the reference. In regards to the 3d shape of the helmet that's achieved with a better shape and more complex shadows in the glass

overall your drawing is good on its own without looking at the reference closely, proportions and shading seem reasonably good but you just need to keep drawing and practising to pick up on the mistakes you make in the rough drawing

P.S. still good enough to move into general population you're probably just as good as most people on /ic/

Head is fucked up. Too long at the back, slightly tilted as well. Looks like an alien. Also, too small.

Nose is too low, but might be forgivable if she is supposed to be a monster girl.

Hair has no physics. I do understand all too well where you were trying to go with it, but even then you could improve it.

In general, not enough motion. More gestures.

Foreshortening could use some work.

Right shoulder is fucked up.

Why didn't you draw the feet?

Ears could be bigger and more exaggerated, you should also try connecting them to the skull. Make it look more organic. Could be through a hair-clip, or to root it to the skull.

>Boxing glove is clipping through her torso.

You need to shade. Otherwise, her lef t boobs disappears into the horizon. She looks like she has an uniboob.

But still, you have the basics of form construction down, your lines are clean, you can draw something which the general public will appreciate. It's pretty, it's fun, shows some effort and improvement.

Next step should be shading and anatomy. And it's much, much easier than you think, so don't be overwhelmed.

It's flat, because you can't into tone and somehow you managed to completely fuck up the anatomy in a simple front view.

But that's fine, because you're a beginner. Just don't attach extreme emotions to your drawings. Because they look like shit, they are shit, and they will be shit, and that's completely fine. Just never stop improving and working hard.

Quantity over quality. What I mean to say is, hopefully you didn't spend too long on that. A gross example would be if you spent an hour on the paraplegic ken doll , the hour would have been better spent on 5 ken dolls with heads, arms, and feet.

I hear the expression "polishing turds" thrown around here a lot.

the goal really wasn't to draw a human figure.
it was to practice shading
i've done shapes like spheres and cones before, but i wanted to try something more complicated

I can tell I'm improving and it feels great. Started taking art a bit more seriously these last couple weeks, doing studies regularly.

This is the first time I've experimented with this weird cell shading shit that I did, does it look awful?
