Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1767437

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

depends on what you want to get better at, I'm juggling between anatomy and stylization atm, but mainly anatomy.

Try to figure out what the muscle looks like under the skin and what it looks like when there is skin over it.

As for gestures, try not to do a certain "number", but aim for sets instead; Do 15 30 seconds, 10 60 seconds then finally 5 2 minutes, etc.

the anatomy is wonky, especially the pelvis and the shapes of the thighs, calves and arms.

I'm not that anon who you are replying to, but holy hell you are delusional.

It isn't "they hate me because im furry :<" victim-complex excuse, its because you are a lying dumbass who is shifting blame away from your terrible drawing. If you actually spent even a handful of hours on studies and fundamentals as you claim than you wouldn't have this a higschool-tier scribble of a "drawing". I mean, take a look

-Where is the perspective and foreshortening?
-Why is this entire drawing devoid of any form whatsoever and looks like a cardboard cutout?
-Why is the thigh gap so humongous?
-Why is the vagina totally flat?
-Why are the arms totally out of proportion?
-Why are the hands so small and the fingers look like they have 1 segment?
-Why is the tail (I think thats what you are trying to do) such a scribbly jagged flat shape?
-Why are the ears protruding out of inconsistent places on either side of the head?
-Why is the head so detached from the body?
-Why is the entire face a misplaced mess?

>implying I don't study at all.

Your drawings glaring flaws proved you don't actually study and are absolutely full of shit.

I want to take art back again, I spend a day a week on Hamm, Loomis and figure drawing but I also want to develop a house style that takes from cartoons, comics and fashion illustration.

What I'm getting at is, what's your routine? Good daily exercises to improve? Artists who you admire because of their successful stylization? Some good books to read on the topic?

It's all about composition m8. Here's what a certain anon said to me a long time ago that I like to look back on from time to time.

>Where and how can I learn to create convincing composition and good storytelling? Is it just intuition?

Composition is something that can be practiced with abstract shapes and lines. I hear the book 'Framed Ink' has some great panels for study, and might talk about composition as well. There are also various compositional 'guidelines' that are aesthetically pleasing / promote good eye flow. This tutorial is alright (be sure to check all the pages):
http://www.cgsociety.org/index.php/CGSFeatures/CGSFeatureSpecial/phil_straub_composition_tutorial

You should find paintings by masters, and break them down into 2-5 major value groups and/or rhythm lines. Study those. How do they use lines (both literal and suggested) and contrast to promote eye flow?

Storytelling you can learn about by reading artist's descriptions of their though processes (preferably high end professionals). The most important thing is to answer all the major questions: What is happening and why? Where is this happening and why? What preceded this snapshot and what will happen after? Who is involved and why? When is this happening (time of day / time period / etc)? What type of mood are you trying to invoke (how should the viewer feel about each major aspect)?

>> No.1777095

>>1777093
If you can answer questions like that successfully, they will guide your entire picture making process (composition, value arrangement, color scheme, gestures, vantage point, etc). The trick is to solve all these problems in the thumbnail and sketch stages. Using those, gather references that you'll need (whether it's a particular pose, or a type of costume, or a type of architecture, or a type of lighting, etc). Use your planned out thumbnails and sketches, as well as your references, to create an illustration

I would also add that expanding the viewer's perceptions within established compositional conventions is a good way to challenge the viewer's expectations. For example, creating a dense, trapped feeling composition but filling it with happy, free, open imagery. That's just a simple example, But I disagree with the guy above that says you need to be a 'genius' to be original. You can be a truly great and original artist if you examine not only what you are painting but why.

Sorry for your loss. It's good that you're looking at a lot of different styles to inspire you, keep at it. You can try to analyze and break down how artists render their styles by emulating their work in studies.

What is your goal once you achieve "your style"? Single image illustration? Painting? Comics? Do thumbnails of compositions, pushing space, viewing angles, etc. You should do studies on those things as well since a figure on a plain white background will get old. Good Luck.

You gotta find the smooth gliding ones and learn to draw those smooth lines. Without fine paper they barely serve any purpose.

Buy a ton of nibs and try them all out. You will eventually find one for each task (thin, thick, curvy, smooth, so on).

Take a paper and draw a bunch of lines with a pencil and then try to trace them all as accurately as possible. This will help you get smoother lines and better precission.

Last, when doing outlines I realized there's always going to be a little unevenness but mostly on the side of the line underneath the nib. Therefore when doing outlines try to always point the pen outwards (this demands a lot of paper turning...).

I'm not going to say I got it very well but these are the things I never got told when I started and that I realized are important.

I will give kudos to picking a light source and sticking to it, you've created a nice focus on the breasts. However, you've obscured the face and lost her emotion to a muddy shadow. I'm not caring for the simple air brush effect you're using for creating forms, you seem to neglect some of the forms you've indicated in the linework, rendering the anatomy back to simple tubes.

>>1778100
Agreed, reference could help. For example, the shadow she creates on the bed would be longer from the angle the light source is at.

A modest first try. But coloring/painting requires just as much thought and effort as the composition and line art.

But my main beef is with the jacket and the boots. So in my design, I imagine the top being more like a leotard, keeping with the removable cape and jacket aspect in the chest and shoulders in the original concept.

Whatever nigger lol, i thought you posted your piece so you could get critique not argue that your figure has magical supple ligaments. All i did was answer your original post by saying that, no, you cant normally really bend that way. And yea, you bending is an extremely quick reference for how a body can and cant normally bend, so that's exactly what that proves. I doubt every character you draw is going to be a contortionist so it's best not to pick up the habit of stretching the spine impossibly.

It feels like you're rushing through a lot of your drawings, and that's affecting how well your anatomy/other qualities of your drawing are coming out.

I'd suggest focusing on completing a single drawing, and force yourself to complete it and take your time on it. Don't quit until you finish, and use as many references as you need.

This way, it'll be easier to tell what you need to improve on, and what areas you can focus on next.

It looks like the issues that I can notice mostly involve anatomy.

A few examples I notice:

On the very bottom picture, the left boob should hanging more to the right or the left due to gravity. The right boob is resting on the right arm, so this would affect the shape of that breast. Where her ass is on the ground should be flatter as a result of the ground pushing up against it. Her right forearm looks like it's skeleton is a noodle. Also, it feels like the torso in general is stuck in an odd position. I think it would make more sense if the upper portion of her back and her shoulder blades were resting on the ground.

In the picture where she's making the heart behind her back, the boob should be sagging a bit more and the nipple should be lower.

These are just a few things that I noticed.

Do you have any of your older pictures saved? Ones from a month or more ago that you can post?

How would you suggest I fix these anatomical errors? I asked before and they said use my imagination with no reference to force myself to remember the anatomy and stuff, THEN look at some sort of reference. I also checked out another thread (the quality vs. quantity one) and the majority said that doing more quick drawings (while spotting errors) as opposed to doing one whole drawing, is better. >How would you suggest I fix these anatomical errors?
Honestly, the best thing you can do is get a book on anatomy and study it. It'll give you a fundamental understanding of how the human body works (the basic framework/skeleton, how muscle forms around the skeleton, and how the skin wraps around and covers these muscles). As far as fixing the errors in your recent drawing, try to find a reference that's close to the position you were drawing or try and see if you can request a redline.

>the majority said that doing more quick drawings (while spotting errors) as opposed to doing one whole drawing, is better. I'm not sure which advice to follow
You're going to get conflicting advice with a lot of things here. I think it would benefit you the most if you begin with quick and loose drawings as a warm-up, and try to spot/fix the errors you find. Then you do a major drawing (drawing from life or something that will take you 30+ minutes or so to finish).

Ideally, you should try mixing it up and see what works best for you. From what I can tell, you've gotten decent at doing gestures, but what you need to work on is constructing and building the human form onto the gesture. I think this is where you're getting the very curved arms and legs in your drawings. For instance, notice the left arm on the picture you posted. it curves a bit much to the right and then the left.

Also this artist paints anime with a classic painting procedure but stylized http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=manga&illust_id=39278159
If you know how light and color works, pretty much all you have to do is experiment, as for me i used to over render things but on the way
i realized that somehow even thought when i see drawings of artist like white datura and the like even though it looks more complete and skillful
it doesn't really do it for me as porn, i just can't really fap to it, and i always end up preferring more simple rendered works with a bit of blending on the

even more so, a beautiful face even more beautiful an ugly face even more ugly, so we make pretty
things easier to catch the eye and ugly things reduced, so we make the eyes bigger and the nose smaller
or more subtle, same with miku above that drawed the under chin, right now the focal point of your drawing
is this ugly very defined big nose, and you don't have to go all out and place a dot for a nose, see this >>1780789

Thanks for the critique. Relative to what I normally paint and draw this is simplistic, but I understand that in relation to what is generally understood as stylised it's a bit more detailed than typical. Couldn't stop myself I suppose. I just don't entirely feel satisfied doing a nose in the shape of an upside down 7. I feel like I can push it a bit more to be a bit truer to life but still wholly within the stylistic minimalism of anime / manga, etc. Using pen admittedly doesn't help because I have a tendency to chicken scratch which ends up with thick dark lines I can't erase, such as the nose, as you pointed out.

Whoops, my redline might be totally irrelevant then, since I thought you were trying for an SD form.

If you were trying for an SD form, I'd suggest simplifying forms and features. Rendering a character with more realistic features on a kind of deformed body cuts close to the Uncanny Valley and will just look odd.

If you are trying to draw a child's body, the arms are bit too long, hands a bit too big, head too long heightwise, and tiny feet.

Creepy face and pose that of a mannequin. Grayness of the skintones don't help either. To quote Quint in Jaws, "She's got dead eyes, a doll's eyes..."

Nice attention to the teeth, but the way you rendered the bottom of the teeth looks like she's got a heck of an overbite.

Proportions look nice, though some weirdness with the gesture of the bent arm.

This is based on a girl I know in real life, her eyes and face are like that. Very big eyes, almost unnatural. I agree with the skin tone. The base skin color could have been something more lively and the shading is too gray. I need to improve my shading.

This girl honestly does have an overbite, especially when she smiles.

I think the bent arm looks kinda strange as well, but it looks good for the most part. Bent arms pointing toward the front of the torso are a bit hard to get right.

Any tips on shading?

Well, if that's how the teeth are, so be it. It's just not very flattering, IMO.

Looking at the pic more, maybe another thing that seems odd about the face is that the eyeballs aren't round, more like mushed ovals on the surface of a face. The definition of the jawline itself makes the face look almost like a mask. Very alien-like.

Post original ref or doing this from memory?

Thanks for responding. 20 years wow. Everyone says that to get good its life drawings after you get the basics down. Is that true? I only am bothering you because I really don't want to take bad advice from more amateur people.

Anon, you should take every piece of advice with a grain of salt regardless of who it's coming from. Granted his work shows otherwise but for all you know he might be outright lying.

Do it in tandem with whatever you're working on right now, build your visual acuity and don't think of earning to draw as something modular and compartmentalized.
