As I posted in the end of the thread...

>Besides some differences from the reference, any critique? I'm trying to get a more painterly feel to it, but I don't really know how to do it. It gets all messy if I try to be more expressive with brushstrokes, and when I try to make it look like a smooth transition it gets messy too. lol
Or maybe I'm just overreacting for working too long non stop...

Now I notice I'm goin too small too fast, maybe I should try sticking to work big for as long as I can?

The perspective was intentional, glad to see it worked. It's pretty much done when I posted that, but yeah I tend to be unable to call things 'done' if I see spots that could be polished up more. Thanks for the comment.

I made it much brigher because it looked literally black when I viewed it from different monitors and the histrogram was a little too biased towards the darker values...

Thanks for the feedback, by the way

Don't be afraid to leave a piece for weeks on end until you know exactly what needs to be done for the next step. Try for your next piece, set a timer for 30 mins. You are only allowed to work on the piece for 30 mins a week / day (depends on how extreme you want it). You are allowed to look at the image as much as you want and plan ahead (do complimentary studies etc) but you are not allowed to work on it outside the designated time.

Try it out you'll find that things can be 'done' very quickly in terms of work effort if you do not waste any time. Of course the piece immediately goes into much longer work cycles, but if it's personal work then it shouldn't mean too much how long something took, does it?

Don't get too caught up in Mullins scribbles. it just adds visual noise which is fooling you into thinking it is better than it is. The other two images you posted are better in this regard--they have more clear shapes from the thumbnail.

I think though that maybe spending a little while painting without any texture brushes or small scribbles would help you a lot in clarifying your shapes and design.

From thumbnail I thought this image was something more like this: http://www.artrenewal.org/artwork/210/210/9653/repose-large.jpg

You have a very nice abstract read, but when you try to look at what it actually is it should be more clear. Maybe study some Andrew Wyeth? He's a master of abstract compositions working within a realist style.

It is a good idea to work on more than one thing at a time. It frees you up from the mindset that what your doing has to be your next masterpiece (!!!)

Yeah true. I started painting using watercolors and I feel that it has helped my ideas. Maybe it's time to bring out the basic.abr pack that Min Yum made eons ago and give it a swing. I'll look into it. Thanks anon

>>1780382
Yeah that was actually something I was going for, I just need to clarify the torso and indicate the head rest clearly. (maybe with some actual cast shadow, hmmm)

Thanks for the recommendation, I haven't done a master copy for a long while. Really adore his snow landscapes.
I just remembered this piece. Its done with the hard round (with a small bit of texture in some parts) though it still has a lot of scribbly strokes it is still recognizable as a car (some kids recognized the car and I believe in them.)

it is meant to be kind of comedic. I think what I'd change is that I put a grey figure on the border dividing the two armies, but the border itself can be a character with being made into a living one.

the theme is that one side praises the sun and one praises the night time, and once a day both are wrong [ or losing the battle]

Don't over-represent the secondary fill lights in the shadows. You're making them too light and this ruins the overall read of the forms. If anything, you should aim to under-emphasize those secondary lights so that you don't ruin the shadow mass.

The values used in the light should be clearly distinct from all the values in the shadow. Meaning the darkest value in the light region should still be considerably lighter than the lightest value in the dark region.

The piece doesn't feel right because the features on the right are slightly too low.

you're focusing too much on the small things. it's a natural temptation because you think that the more subtle things you're seeing, the more realistic your end product will end up being. the thing is, our brains care far more about the overall basics being right than they care about details. you get your foundation right, and you can build on it. without that, anything you build on top of it crumbles.

with that in mind, try squinting (squinting, not looking with your eyes out of focus) at your reference and seperating everything into as few values as possible. simplify and get those as accurate as you can before you worry about less impactful details like the underside of a pectoral or other tiny skin creases.

I'm sorry to say this, but the face is still very flat. It's reminiscent of a dinner plate, except for the nose and lips. Don't neglect the form of the overall head, not just the 'features'. Remember that overall you're dealing with an egg shape. Paint an egg next to your head and light it the same way if it helps you any. Pic related.

The eyes also still look too high on the head. Again, draw the overall head first, then crop once you're done painting. You may even find to like the version with the top of the head better.

The bottom of the ear lines up with the bottom of the nose. Your ear is ending halfway up the nose. The eyes, eyebrows and ears have to all be lowered to different extents.

If it helps any, when you draw the whole head, draw the skull as well on it's own layer. Do the eye sockets, nasal opening, cheekbones, etc line up correctly, or are they distorted?

Thanks to the last anon who gave me advice in the past thread, I replied but it was already autosaging.

I fixed the absence of drop shadows and added some form ones.

Changed the hue of the hair and added more cranial space.

Tried to fix several other minor things (eyes alignment and perspective, warmer tones, upper breast area, attire).

Maybe I will be able to finish it and be satisfied with it after all

No it doesn't, look at the rest of the body.

The breasts are either floating or they're off perspective. It doesn't completely ruin the image, but it's an obvious damn flaw and can easily be fixed.

Looks a lot better than the last time, especially the face. The cast shadow of the neck still looks a little off to me. Considering how the tip and nostrils of the nose are lit, I feel that the side of the neck should be catching more light. The shadow also seemed too long as well. I tried to account for both of these, but it's hard to map out without meticulous construction or a reference of sorts.

The hair feels a little funny and stiff, especially the side on our right. Feels like anime spikes/locks of hair. The collarbone could use some development. The clothing is also underwhelming, and the weird white highlights make it looks like you were trying to render it as a crystal instead of fabric.

For all of your future portraits, be sure to experiment with thumbnails before committing so that you can have the best composition, best pose, best expression, best color palette, etc. Try to incorporate more character and intent in your portraits, especially the eyes. Another anon mentioned needing to have some direction/intent in the eyes, and I agree completely.

The depth reads, but I feel the color shifts to green too quickly. Reads more like stripes than being submerged. I'd try to make it more gradual, and increase the effect for the deepest parts. Consult some references (ideally from life) to get a feel for it, because I could be mistaken.

The water ripples are a little unconvincing. The right most tentacle ripples do have a sense of motion, but I think the others could use that as well.

This. There's a lot you can do with one brush, but it involves using it creatively. One of the things digital painters really miss out on is learning the principles of actually painting. Stroke and under paintings can add a lot of really pleasing texture with just the same brush. Good brush strokes tend to be one of the must under utilized techniques in amateur digital paintings. I suggest experimenting with the direction and forcefulness of your strokes instead of just sort of blobbing everything in.

What? When people talk about the horizon line in art, they don't mean the actual horizon you see in a scene with hills and shit overlapping it, but the theoretical horizon line / eyelevel as if you were fucking Cyclops from the X-men and you'd cut a perfect straight line with your eyes, looking straight ahead. If the horizon line is tilted, the entire image becomes tilted and not just one object.

When a parallel object like a table has vanishing points on different eyelevels, then the perspective is wrong, plain and simple. Please observe life so you can start treating perspective as a tool to help you create correct 3 dimensional space, and not as some annoying rule that you need to somehow find excuses to avoid at all cost.

True it's not easy but it just appears that you didn't try. Everything is in perspective, even if it isn't a cube with a horizon line with to VP's. In this case, the angle of his hips and shoulders can be drawn out to intersect at two VP's on either sidd wth the horizon line being at his belly button. yours is athis rib cage, and thus, little things add up to big fuckups.

His point was to flip the canvas in order for the artist to see the mistakes they've made with fresh eyes, the face is skewed, it's a valid critique followed by valid advice

What's your problem man?

This is one of my better drawings, most recent thing I've done. I still have a lot to learn, I'm not fully familiar with PS yet either.

Some critique on the level of work I'm currently at would be good to know. (:

I have a lot of trouble drawing foreground and middle ground objects in environments, I think it's because I've lived in an area where there's nothing but flat boring land for miles

What do?

that should make it easier. firstly make sure your perspective is solid (it is in this case) next theres a few ways to show distance from the camera. (Don;t forget, a pitcture comes from a camera, so think of each drawing is a photo)

Heres some ways

-Details. Close objects are more detailed, farther away are obviously less so
-Size: This one is pretty self explanitory, but to make it fit the proportions are important for the scale to be believable.
- Contrast: farther away objects have lower contrast than the closer ones.

Remember, proportion isn't just the head to body ratio, it's the everything to everything ratio

you can have warped perspective. in which case the horizon line is not flat

>> No.1783677

>>1783671
And then, by defeniton, the perspective is warped. He clearly was not trying to have warped perspective, he had a simple table in 2 point perspective but it was wrong. and in any case where an attempt at believable perspective is being made, a flat, horizontal horizon is preferable.

The thing i'm most worried about is needlessly complicating the composition of the whole thing, I want it to read very simply and be bright and cheery, sort of a childish vibe, but i need the background to convey that the guy on the ground is gathering gigantic strawberries

I dont know man, I thought under construct form you were assuming value and brushwork. that was really the point of study. objectively i dont think that slight difference from ref in torso turn that big of a deal but whatever.

the thing is, you know how to render a ball, you know how to render a cylinder, you know how to render a rectangle etc. So if you construct the body out of those simple shapes the rendering will come easier.'
Construction is THE most important part of drawing, it makes perspective, rendering, composition, and everything else easier.

I don't think you need to make a background, the focus seems to be on the character.
Gave it a try btw, not a critique but this is what I would do if I had to continue the painting.

Imaginative painting I started today. Advice/Critique?

>>1783819

Think about the story behind what is happening in the piece. Theres obviously the character standing arms outstretched facing upwards towards the light. Brainstorm what the light is and where she is. Is she on the run and a helicopter spotted her and she's surrounded, raising her arms in defeat? Is she in some chamber partaking in a secret ritual of her organization?

Run with your imagination, tell your story dude.

>>1783566

The point of interest is unclear for me. Are you trying to highlight the helmet or the gun.

I'd tone one down, or add a third. Odd number of points are better for the composition and are more eye catching.

>>1783037

Was this a study? I like it.

>>1783982
What is YOUR point of interest? haven't you been asked that already? Please take some book in your hands, maybe Color and Light, study perspective, study other artists. Now it's very bad and there's not much to critique. It's very muddy, blurry, monotone and there is no sense of depth.
