Yes, I sound dumb because I'm able to notice that there are tangents in the image that seem to serve no purpose.

Avoiding tangents is illustration 101, it's one of the basics of designing an illustration. I've been called out on them by a billion instructors during critiques, so many times that it's now the first thing I spot in an image and avoid at all costs unless it's intentionally something being played with like pic related. This tangent of the engine lining up with the bottom of the plane serves no purpose. There's no way it was intentional, and if it was, it was a bad decision. The image would read more strongly if the engine dipped slightly below that line and helped with the silhouette of the outside shape. Stronger silhouette = stronger readability = stronger concept.

I'm not calling this artist out because I don't like him, I don't even know who the fuck he is. Please don't try to argue basics of design with me because I will literally school you. Your ignorance is showing by trying to call me out on a basic design flaw. If you can explain what purpose that tangent serves and why it was a better choice than helping the silhouette with it dipping beyond the plane's bottom, I would love to hear it. Please don't just say, "It looks fine".

Interestingly enough, doing some Google reverse searches can find the original photo, and in that the tangent between the engine and body of the plane isn't there.

Do yourself a favor. Take a piece of masking tape, cover the bottom of the plane, and step way back from your computer screen. See how well it reads as a plane when you're standing so far back that you lose the details? That's because the silhouette is done really well up there. Now do the opposite, Cover the top of the plane with tape, step way back, far enough to lose the details. See how it's just some ambiguous object? That's because the silhouette is weak. If that engine protruded below that, it would have a much stronger read.

It's pretty clear that it isn't a paintover. Plus, considering the quality of his studies from life, he wouldn't have gotten to that level by doing paintovers for his metric ton of photostudies. It's just a matter of copying color shapes accurately by eye - not particularly hard to do with a lot of practice.

Juniper's knot, a short visual novel made by 4 guys in a month, was actually the whole reason I choose to be an artist, everything about it was fucking amazing, the soundtrack, the story and the artwork simply inspired me to do better with myself in life. Such a shame that it's mostly unheard of, the artist, doomfest is especially good at what he does but he deserves 1000x more views, he's certainly more deserving than others. Anyway, I'll post his art.
