Thanks, this really does help point out all the mistakes, but I can't help feeling like using a grid is somehow cheating.
Seeing as this is a study, is it OK, or is eyeballing everything a better way to learn?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

You don't use the grid while you're drawing.

>> No.1776755

>>1776741

A grid is a tool, nothing more. If it helps you to see the shapes in the original, to better define contrast and volume in your study, then it is a boon and you should use it.

I can see how one might be concerned that it could become a crutch, and if that is the case then you should alternate using it in studies (do one study with, do the next study without). That's just my opinion. Hope that helps!

I can't really pinpoint the ship's orientation no matter how I look at it. Pic related. Is the blue arrow indicating the top of the ship, or is it the brown arrow? The brown guns look larger, and the bowl-like slope of the ship makes me think that's the top, but the shit behind the blue arrow looks like some kind of bridge, which would indicate the top of the ship. It's really disorienting.

No ref used, just imagination/another composition that started to look like a crashed ship and a lighthouse... So yeah, nothing serious and it was done in less than an hour. I was thinking of the ship as source of the waves but exaggerated them for impact. I think the main problem is the low range of values making everything look dark and the lack of focal point is probably contributing to that... If i weren't so tired, i would fix it now but i'll probably return to it tomorrow. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

>> No.1777869

>>1777851
Thats the least of the problem. The brown is the bottom. It's top is on the other side.

The real problem is the composition being trash. The NASA shot in the background destroys the balance. The bloom and rays make it impossible to see. The interior is not in a perspective, it runs completely parallel while the ship suggests a lens. The canvas is the wrong shape for the scene, a widescreen shot of a bridge with space to see space would have been a better idea. All in all, terrible planning and a terrible shot.

The transitions from areas of different value are very sudden which is why the areas of shadow and light look like surfaces joined at an angle rather than surfaces wrapping around a rounded form. You need to transition more softly over rounded surfaces.

Regarding the gesture, there's a squish on her right side and an extension on her left side as well as a rotation between her hips and her torso. A quick gesture sketch before you begin can help you feel out the pose.

This is a home work.
We need to draw in the classic inking style and make a science fiction illustration.

My picture seems to be too complicated and lack of focus...... I think this is because I lack of spot black ?

can /ic/ give me suggestion??

>> No.1778188

>>1778186

is that size format a requirement? it doesn't lend itself to an illustrative piece.

I'd scrap it and start again with a more standard format, that way you can actually use rules of composition comfortably not on a stretched out workspace.

What do you want to be the focus of the picture? The man with the rifle riding the camel creature?

If so you need to make him a larger part of the picture, maybe make him standout somehow, with a more unique comp.

>> No.1778191

Yes. We need to draw in this super strange format.

Because this is an illustration for old school TRPG book..........

I am not sure should I make the man bigger. Because we should show more background.

I am going to put more spot black on the man to make it looks more stand out ....

(I can almost instantly tell it's you by the way you paint faces, might want to try more variations or exaggerate a little more)

Anyway, I do like the colors going on in some areas, like the shadow on her neck. However the highlights are overblown, as the brightest points right now are her cheeks and forehead, especially the forehead. Might want to tone that down, and put the brightest white on where you want the viewer to look - like the eyes.

As it stands it feels needlessly empty, the dark areas to the right are just...well, dark. There's no reason for anyone to look there, so I don't think it should be there at all. This would only be okay if you're doing a book cover or a spread for a book of some kind, where you'd place text on the darker page or have that as the back cover.

If it's your intention to make a book cover or a spread for a book, then ignore this.

Something's been bothering me about this (besides the slightly uncanny sameface) and I only just now figured it out:

Explain your cast shadows firez. Like load this up in photoshop and explain them to me. Map out exactly where the light source is pointing in 3D space, and what forms are causing what cast shadows.

The cast shadow of the nose is long and narrow, and the cast shadow of the jaw is also too long. Though they are misshapen, they do imply a high light source. Yet we have no cast shadows of the brow ridge onto the eyesocket. This stuff is inconsistent.

Other people have mentioned darkening your darks, which you should absolutely do.

you need to paint in the values around the figure while you work, remember: value studies are all about relationships. so get those almost blacks in the background and watch your negative spaces.

Im by no means great with value and my example has some bad values, but my value work progressed much faster when I treated the study as a whole, not just my cherry picked figures.
