Perspective is off. The top of the head recedes in space away from the viewer, so it should get smaller. Draw the box that contains the entire head in perspective, and keep it's angle in mind as you construct the rest of the drawing.

You'll also have an easier time if you:
a) Draw the entire head first, and not just the face - work big to small, general to specific
b) Place a background color that matches the ref before you paint - easier to judge values and color that way.

Values are off and the lighting is inconsistent (strong cast shadow indicating directional light, but ambient lighting on figure). The feet look awkward and the close arm doesn't sit in space well. unrelated, but dude you're handsome

judging by the missing top part of the head, i'm guessing you just went right ahead and painted without much planning. i'd sketch in your portrait first to snatch the proportions, maybe mark places where the shadow hits a bit.

then block in the colors under that layer. then paint over the sketch to tighten up.

not bad work for a beginner actually. keep it up man

Proportions nigga.
Quick tip : On an average face, the length of the nose is roughly around 3 times height of the eye. Proportions between nose and mouth, and mouth with chin is okay.

Placement and size of ear also needs some fixing. Refer once in a while from reference even if you're doing from imagination.

I suggest for you to take a step back and go down a more basic level. Just simple shapes. There, you can focus on proportions and head planes first. Hampton's head tutorial and Loomis might help. Don't forget to study skulls to reinforce your understanding.

here's a shitty paintover

some tips to get better results
- use a simple lighting setup and think about it when painting shadow and light
- use a ref for the pose and remember about proportions. don't get fooled by photo distortion
- paint occlusion shadows
- when using ref, try to "understand", not just "see"
- check your painting against a similar one made by a pro (is the value range ok? maybe it looks flat because the shadows should be darker? are colors too desaturated?)

Not that anon but for me, the triangle at the bottom of the painting created by the top of his tail, the side of his wing, and his flank, is distracting. Maybe that's just me.

My only other issue I have with the image is the draon's design. The back spikes seem kind of random and superfluous. Maybe if they were scalloped like on his leg it would feel more natural. Also, the wings are unrealistic in terms of functionality. For bat type wings to carry a critter through the sky, they would have to extend further back, perhaps to his hip. See pic of bat!

Otherwise, it's a fantastic image in nearly every respect. These are minor nit picks and your rendering, lighting, and storytelling are superb. My favorite part is his head. Keep it up man, far better than I can do!

- try to make features more aligned and symmetrical
- careful with the shading - wrong value here or there and things end up flat

- simplify hair

Draw completely from your head, no reference. Keep in mind what you have trouble with. Then go back and look at your sources to see what you got wrong and study that plus what was difficult for you. Then go back, draw from imagination again. Repeat till you get it.

well, as far as proportions go, you gonna get a lot of shit for that. that's why i suggest you sketch it out first; i think you have a pretty good understanding of proportion actually, but it's poor here because like i said, there's no planning. so i'll drop any of that shit for now. but this does look like a bit of an improvement as far as proportions go.

as for the colors, it's pretty spot on. if you're going to continue this study, i guess my suggestion to you is to try to smooth it out to understand a bit about digital rendering. you've blocked in enough colors to do that. (maybe only the shirt and a quick splash of the bg color to go) it'll minimize the "fussing" look and what the other anon said about "using bigger brushes."

but try to scrap this soon and start a new one, but this time with a battle plan. better results, guaranteed.

I know people say that you should start of traditionally when you're learning to draw (which I have), but does this apply to painting as well? Do what you want to do in the first place. Fucking around with paint is a waste of time if you want to work digitally. Play some Osu! with the tablet to get used to moving your arm properly. Beware of secret fatigue: wear a cotton glove with the thumb and two fingers cut off or the rubbing will make you stop working and you won't realise why. Use ManicTime to keep yourself honest and ensure you are meeting your time goals.

>> No.1775272

The thread's not dead, people lurk it you know.

But yeah it applies to painting. You should take a painting class from someone who knows their shit if you can. Maybe try new masters academy, do a trial and do some of the painting videos. You most likely found the color mixing frustrating because you don't know enough about value or color or your materials yet.

I'd say do a color wheel or like grey scale paintings first dude.

But anyways jumping into digital won't fucking kill you, however it would help you immensely if you learned traditional first.
However training your eye to pick colors with digital might be good too, since you're not going to need to mess with mixing colors.

Hell you could even do digital first for a while then go take a painting class later.

To be honest I think her eyes look slightly off. I think you've made them too big and vibrant, Merkel's eyes are really quite small and beady afaik. The right side of her lips is just kind of disappearing, making that side of her mouth look smaller and misshapen. She also looks years younger than she is in your picture. The picture is technically good but I think she just misses that tricky likeness thing that you really want to have in these kind of celebrity portraits. Please don't let this discourage you however, likeness is ridiculously hard to get and it's a constant struggle for me too. Just keep trucking.

I mostly just doodle and make quick stupid pictures, but sometimes I sit down and really do try to make the best picture I possibly can. Now this is the latest of my serious drawings, I made it a couple of months ago.

I know the anatomy is shit, but I kind of like drawings that aren't too realistic. But I really should try to draw more often and start studying art and all that stuff, I'm just not patient enough.

I think her irises need to be a bit larger. Looking around at photos you don't see very much of the sclera. I'd also add more emphasis to the crease just above the upper eyelid - a lot of photos have a lot of deep darks in there. This somewhat applies to the outer interior corners of the eyes. I'd also push the spherical forms of the sclera, and possibly lower the overall value a bit.

For spotting potential differences, I'd flip your image and shrink it down to a thumbnail. Do the same for a ref sheet of photos (thumbnail size and flipped), then see if there are any major differences that you can spot. Yours looks fairly close at normal zoom, but a lot of that likeness seems to disappear at thumbnail size IMO.

I'd also look to some presidential portraits for inspiration in terms of lighting, color of the backdrop, etc. Kinstler comes to mind:

Honestly a lot of your larger shapes are just off. Focus on an accurate reproduction, and the anatomy will fall into place. I also wouldn't bother trying to change her attire when you don't have solid enough understanding of what's going on beneath there.

Focus on getting your big shapes correct, then refine down to your smaller shapes. A good technique is shown in Bargue and Gerome Drawing Course, but essentially the same principal is also shown in Drawing Made Easy by Lutz.

Once you can copy shapes accurately, you can move onward to studying perspective and basic forms, constructing complex forms from basic forms, etc. What you do later on depends on your goals, but for now learning to see accurately and translate that to paper is step 1.

Anon again. I was bored while waiting on my dinner so I tried my hand at this. Here are a few points:

-Draw the whole head first, then crop what you need way later. It's easier to keep the tilt of the head and the proportions correct as you go along.

-I included the earliest saved drawing stage and marked off the proportions. I tried to do a slight uptilt, which I believe is what you were going for, so the ear will be a bit lower than the bottom of the nose and the browline for the average head.

-I used a reference (poorly), but the actress (Cobie Smulders) seems to have a fairly close likeness to what you were going for. Ideally you'd use a ref for the lighting scenario as well, which I didn't. I tried to use warm shadows to complement the cool primary light.

-I'm not sure if this is how you approached the painting, but I tried to paint the entire head in the dim lighting scenario, being mindful of plane changes. The bands of light were on a separate adjustment layer, with some opaque painting on top of everything.

I'm not sure how helpful any of this really is, but since I already did it I figured I'd post in case it helps you any. Also, don't take anything I say or depict as fact since I'm still learning myself.

The nose in general still needs fixing. I'm sure she's finding it hard to breathe with that tiny nostrils of her. The nose is also looking flat, just like the rest of her face. I'd suggest studying skulls, and maybe how to render form first, just like in >>1774830 since you both have the same problem.

Ear height should start roughly from her eye level, and ends at her nose level. The placement will differ when she tilts her head (upwards, downwards), like what the paintover dude said earlier.

For the overall painting, here's some general advice. When painting some face that closed up, try to avoid perfect symmetry composition. You could have her turn her head slightly or such. Perfect symmetry gives this bad feel, almost uncomfortable, unexplainable feeling deep inside your head. You painting something close to uncanny valley does not help either. Try mirroring a straight portrait and you will get this.

Edges and values are weak considering the lighting situation can be interesting. Try to paint more with harder brushes. Colors is also weak. Try to 'warm' it up where her skin is hit with light, and 'cool' down the shadows to get some contrast. This is just a suggestion, so try and experiment with this.

Nice. Though if you want to stay close to your source material, maybe make her slightly on the chubby side.

>>1776262
Forgot to add. The long face is probably caused by the part of the face starting from the nose to her chin, which is extra long. The length of the philtrum should not be almost close to the length of the nose.

Nose is still a bit long.

Anyway, proportions, proportions, proportions!

I am a beginner, so I won't be able to express myself beyond what I find obvious.
Your character being the focus of the scene is obvious but at the same time, if you think about this scene as you would think about the shot, the distance between our eyes and the character is too far for us to see this clear of individual values on the character, while everything else is.. different.

What I am trying to get across is that your foreground is too interesting for me to accept the character as the scene's focus: the wall in front is more interesting/has more details and pushed values than the "middleground", the head on top seems to be the light source but isn't bright enough compared to all the surfaces and their values and for some reason my head thinks that the head is a part of the arch, not a aprt of the ceiling. It feels a bit like an illusion.

youve obviously put a lot of time into coloring and shading... my problems with this image are mostly about the form of the face, which ive tried to demonstrate with this sketch.
first and foremost, i feel like you need to pick a perspective that is consistent and believable... the way the eyes line up with the ears... the amount of space between the features... the view would see more of the bottom of the nose...
the shape of the eyebrows is wak...
i dont really like your coloring much either actually, but the form bugs me more... i kinda like some of the lighting tho. particularly the highlights. just keep practicing.

Hm, yea, I think my problem was that I did not decide the specifics of lighting. Now I can see how its all over the place. Yea, the character is way too intense... I will try to even things out a bit somehow....Maybe darken the whole background, the 2 colons in the back, just even it out a bit. And maybe make the first two colons have the darkest shadows. Anyway, I think I should either focus on the character only, or make it like any other still life-things in the front have the biggest contrast. So I will try the second I think..

Thanks. Its a goddess Lilith in her temple. I was getting tired of all the studying of fundamentals, so I decided to make myself an exciting task. I read about Lilith, her symbols-snake, white rose, the ability to charm through mirrors....and I came up with this. Great way to practice and you learn much more when you actually want to make something amazing.

Another one I made, this time A2 cut in to a square. All pencil. I started with the cliche owl and the moon, but I though I will add something a bit more interesting... The feathers of the owl are a struggle though..

if the features are unique, then the artist needs to make us believe that it works. human faces dont work like that... perspective doesnt work like that... and if its a "stylization", then its done poorly in my opinion.

you should really define the eyes better if you haven't already, also i feel like the green generally isn't harmonious with the subject. choosing complementary colors, red and green as your two main colors is very risky and right now it just flattens the over all painting. Both colors are way too strong and I feel like nothing stands out.
I'd suggest drowning the green BG with more blue so that the portrait stands out more. You could also add subtle touches of green in the hollows of her eye to make them pop out more.

Keep up the good work though!! I like the painting !

It is good form to try not to parrot terms you know nothing about on /ic/. And if you're barely above beginner level, mind your language and stop speaking like you're hot shit. You will make yourself look ridiculous.

Hope this would be a lesson for you in the future.

>>1776338
Well, I actually like the way you handled the edges. I also like the clean painting work. The hair could be simplified more imo. Too much strands, but it's not that bad though.
Values are good, but I feel that you can inch slightly towards the darker ranges, if you want to stay close to the source image.

But I feel that the proportions are off compared to the original image. The thing about humans is that we tend exaggerate certain features, especially faces, when they stand out. For example, people with round eyes, we tend to make those eyes bigger in our drawings, eventhough those big round eyes, compared to other people, is only a a couple of millimeters bigger. This might play in your hand if you're doing caricatures, but it might mess up things if you're trying to get the actual proportions right.

So, try to make sure your proportions are good before painting further for studies. But I feel, independent of the original ref, yours is quite okay actually.

try not to use the smudge tool, use opacity instead, its alot easier to control and looks less sloppy. your anatomy is quite off- especially in the pelvis and breast area, and youve really stylised the face- her eyes are waaaay to big

it might actually benefit you to block out the values in a paintover if you are really struggling with this reference- try and really concentrate on what is happening, and look at every shape in proportion to the other shapes around it

also dont fear darker values

also dont fear feet

copy your drawing into a layer over your reference and see where your biggest errors are, then delete it and try again, focusing on your big areas of weakness (angle of the head, shape and site of the nose, size/shape/placement of the eyes, chin too big/wrong shape, lips the wrong shape... youve extended her head like shes craning forward and looking to the size, which differs to the ref) try not to use that box technique, it encourages bad habits when youre working from a ref (its good for general proportions but will only give you cookie cutter faces if youre not experienced enough to use it properly)

ok so how should i start, from the oval and cut it ?

dont draw an oval, dont draw any 'shapes' at all, only draw light; imagine youre trying to trace the outline of light on her face.

look at the ref and blur your eyes a little, you will see her face defined into very simple but irregular shapes- dont put down any base circle or box to draw from; her head isnt a circle or a box: its what you see when you squint.

think less about the rules you know about eyes being x width apart and the nose x high up the face and look at the ref and thing, hmmm, the space between her upper lip and nose is the same as the width of her lower lip, and her chin is the same size as her lips etc etc look really hard at the ref, it will give you its own clues to work by- look always for proportions in relation to one another

Hey i like to draw portraits.
The reference is a photo. I can upload it to if you want to see it.

Any thoughts and critique so far?

I really want to improve but I have nearly no free time at the moment, so practicing will be difficult.
