Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1761673

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

This. People like deadhorseguy and cantbehelped were fucking based because they were putting in the work and making gains, lefty would post some dumb/funny shit and would usually fuck off, teal would pop in and redline some noob's drawing and people liked that until these threads became overrun with newfriends and crossboarders and it became an echo chamber for sycophants and trolls.

We wanted peers, contemporaries, discourse, self awareness. We've got none of that now.

Your values are muddy and the forms are not reading clearly--you are too focused on small form changes.

Here is how I would do it, I saved it in steps so you can see. I start by flattening the values of the entire figure, and simplifying the outer contours since there are many small ugly bumps on the outline. The next step I start bringing in some subtle shadows, note how it is not going very dark and how I try to keep it consistent. The last step I add some highlights to bring out more form.

The main takeaway is that the values are controlled and forms are presented in the simplest manner possible.

Her right (our left) thigh/buttock area is all wrong. It looks like her calf is merely shaded against a flat wall ( but it's actually her thigh).
Here, the thigh is a solid mass of muscle and fat pushing against/resisting more muscle and fat (the calf).
Look up some nude figures (preferably greyscale) to see how limbs of the body interact with other parts. The way fat lays flat, presses against objects, and "drapes" off the bone.
(Press your finger into the fatty base of your thumb to see an example. There's no hard shadows.)

First off adjust the format. Its basically a square canvas which is not not flattering to your picture. Think about negative and positive space. the light comes from the upper left, so if you take a 1 to 1.41 ratio canvas, set the figure to the lower right. that would work best imo. Try to be consistent with your shadows then. You basicaly have light sources all ove rthe place
As about the coloring, as I said, try to maybe for go for a blue-ish overall tone to give it a melancholic feeling? Light does not come in dark and light but with different color information, like try a nighttime feel. Look for pictures taken at night and get a similair color feeling going. Limited palettes usually help to get a certain mood across.
About your feet, yeah those are really fucked, they are very flat and have no real good form. The light on them also doesnt work since they are lid from the upper right for no reason. They also are not proportioned right

The ratio of the distance between her brow and the bottom of her nose (A) compared to the distance between the bottom of her nose and her chin (B) is off. It should be 1:1 but you have the brow-nose distance longer (A>B), so she looks a little off. Also the middle of the lips is set a bit too low, it should be in the highest third of the nose-chin distance. Pic related

Bad advice. You really aren't a very good artist if you're telling someone to go do that. Otherwise your critique was okay, don't let this deter you. Just know your shit mayne.

Someone did a decent paintover already, but I wanted to try one too. Some points I noticed:

- Her eyes are weird. Why are her lower eyelids curved upward?

- As the other anon demonstrated, her nose is a bit too big if you're going for a "cutesy" look.

- Similarly, the shadows you painted on her face are also a bit too harsh for a cute girl. Go for a softer feel (I'm assuming this is what you're aiming for).

- Your lighting is inconsistent. Judging from the shadow under her nose, seems like light should be coming from above. Her boobs don't look like they're lit from above in your painting. Her arms and body at points 2 and 3 should be darkened in respect to that lighting.

- At point 1, her sleeves make no sense. I tried connecting her arm under your drawing so you can see why those folds look a bit wonky.

Hope that helps.

people can only draw what they know. and in this case too, it showed.
even though you were trying to draw mami, the face you were imagining in your head was something entirely different. there is no reason why there would be so many hard and angular features in her face. in the future, try to understand what kind of look you are actually trying to achieve.

study more real humans with real features, also study different proportions you could use. in your case especially, try to the study soft features of children.

another huge mistake is the waistline. notice the contour of the waistline going gown the legs in your image. you definitely were't thinking about anatomy or form in those places.

Because your colors are all very saturated, you don't take into consideration colors that bounce off of other things (look up some james gurney for this) and your shadows on things are just that color but a little darker.

Do some studies from life, or do some landscape or color studies. You need to learn how to pick colors by eye as well as how they behave in the real world.

The difference is that the other artist understands that a little better than you do.
Not to say he doesn't have his own issues, however.

Drawing shoulders well is about everything but the shoulders. The neck has to be in a good position, the trapezius has to shape the whole upper shoulder area. The chest, and the breast muscles are important. The way the arm connects on the back and the front is important. My mistake is visible there, it should probably not connect to the outline but to the wing muscle. I try to focus on the way the collarbones move when assuming the pose you're trying to capture. It says a lot about the position of the body. My skills are real shit but hope it helps.

>> No.1774917

>>1774751
The anterior part of the deltoid muscle originates from middle-ish of the clavicle. You need to change the silhouette line so it show this else the arms will just look like two indepedent cylindes instead of being attatched. Also consider how the pectorals inserts.

>> No.1774918

>>1774898
using a ref is not a substitute for learning real anatomy. You have failed to define the chest and abdomen; it looks like texture on a flat board, not a form. you don't know forms well enough to pull off only using reference, which is why it looks flat. This will be a good piece to look back on after you get better.

The pencils were by John Royle, I'm just inking it for him. As for MS5, I've just scratched the surface of the things it can do, messing around mostly with the pressure curve for the Pencils and Pens. You can do all sorts of things with tones and importing 3D models, but I haven't touched those. Vector pathing can be had also, but I don't think it's as versatile as Illustrator.
