Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"No matter how much you know of anatomy and the construction of the figure, you will not be able to draw figures form imagination until you can relate the different parts of the figure to a horizon."

Previous Thread: >>1755700

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Remember the words of our good friend Glen Vilppu: “No rules, just tools.”

(From the last thread)
Your gestures don't look too bad, although you should be careful about your proportions, how the figure is planted onto the ground, and plumb lines especially. I don't actually know what vilppu is (I haven't actually been on /ic/ in years), but from what I gather it's some kind of course?

When studying anatomy, I borrowed my friend's "Artistic Anatomy" book (can be found on amazon, not sure about any free pdf's online) that shows muscles, the muscles under muscles, and how they all look together. Not saying you need to get this book, since your muscle studies seem to be coming along well, but if you're ever confused about any tiny muscles lying under other ones, that book is really good at showing everything. One of the best anatomy exercises I've ever done, was taking sketches and drawings done by old experts like Michelangelo, Greuze, Leyendecker, etc. and trying to outline the muscles in their sketches.

Aside from all of that, you should pay a lot of attention to your bones, and skeletal structures. Your drawings with a reference are okay, but your Rin's are significantly more awkward. Try doing a pose in a mirror before you draw it, to get an idea of whether it makes sense, and how natural it feels. Don't be afraid to look at references, since your drawings could really use them. You seem to be on the right track so far, keep working at it.

I'll definitely take this to heart and go back to working on anatomy before I continue. Kind of want to finish it up before I go back to practice, but I think studying again would be for the better too.

Vilppu's videos are just another set of fundamental/anatomy basics like Loomis and I much prefer them to Loomis as they are easier to follow IMO at least.

I kind of got afraid to use references after a while because I was having that "anime mask on realistic body" problem for the longest time. I think I'll start relying more heavily on references again now that I have the right direction for faces.

Thanks again.

The biggest problem right now is the faces. They look really flat because the neck isn't connecting at the right place and the shading wonky. Try Looking at anime figure heads and study how the light hits them.

The breast are also a bit too high as well. . The ones I drew might be saggin a bit too much for being inside a bra but it gets the point across. The cleavage line should never be that close the pit of the collar bone. They start at the delicious arm pits.

Your proportions seem pretty good though. The legs might be a bit too long, but that's more of a preference thing because long legs can be sexy

Tits overlap the armpit, almost as if they are anchored to the upper shoulder rather than the chest.
Elbow tapers off ungracefully.
The right shoulder (viewers left) seems to be just as high up as the other one, yet the tit is considerably lower.
Lots of poins in this are off balance because you probably drew the tits first and the torso around it.
Practice with real porn if you are going to draw toon porn.
I recommend looking at Gianna Michaels for that body type. Maybe Sophie Dee?
Find a video you like.
Pause it at a good point.
Draw from there.
Do this enough, and your tits will look shapely and natural.

Also, some of those dicks.
Think of where the men would have to be for them to be in that position.

One of those dicks is upside down.

I was bored and draw-y, so here's a redline for you!
Being the first to admit I'm no expert on anatomy, listen to every single word I say without questioning me (no but really i'm just highlighting some points and you should look up references based on the problem areas because firsthand research is the best kind). ALRIGHT!
Allowing for how long the legs are (because i'm like that too), the construction could use a bit of improvement. First, think about placement. The way her left (our right) leg is jutting out suggests (to me at least) that it should be pointing outward, otherwise I feel a bit like she's going to fall over.
Then think about the separate parts of the leg and how they relate to eachother. The upper leg tapers into the knee, and doesn't seem to end until the bottom of it. The knee, at its simplest, is pretty much a ball and tends to bulge out as such in the front, especially when the leg is straightened. The lower leg, meanwhile, connects at the bottom of the knee in the front and the back of it in the back. The front goes straight down, sometimes almost appearing to curve inwards, while the back of it bulges out before tapering in almost dramatically at the ankle.
The foot deserves more consideration as well, I mean it gets walked all over all the time and doesn't say a thing (sorry)! The doodle on the pic shows the relation between the parts well enough, I think. Also, in heels the ankle follows the sole damn near in a straight line to the ball, so the heel juts out more significantly than usual.
And though I didn't take the liberty to show this in the drawing, imitating the pose in the mirror shows that it's fairly uncomfortable, especially on tiptoes, to hold it without straining a muscle more than it needs to. A good habit, when convenient, is to do poses in a mirror BEFORE starting, to make sure it's plausible and to pick your line of action and support leg.
Also, booby connects at armpit uvu (Sorry for length but I hope it helps!)

Apologies. Everything in it is a bit doodly because I was mainly giving tips; the drawings are just the best way I know how to explain what I mean. They aren't intended to really be studied from, because I know that that would be irresponsible at my current skill level, so I only drew them very basically. That's why I said in the post that references should be searched for accordingly and looking in the mirror (drawing from life in general, now that I think of it) is the best way to go.
That said, I'll have to keep a lookout for whether I've been drawing symbolically in my own work, so thank you for reminding me of that at least.

Her torso from the hip up is too small and short for her legs. You also need to have her breasts sit lower than they currently do in relation to her shoulders - they come out from the arm pit. I also don't think she'd be able to stand on her toes in heels like that... flatten the heeled shoe to the floor and rotate her foot back a bit so her weight is resting in her heel otherwise it'd be easy for her to fall over. This picture has a lot of blank space. If you don't want to fill it with anything, I'd suggest to just cut it off so that your image's dimensions follow your composition. Don't hesitate to cut off a part of the turret if you feel like you have to.

You might want to consider using a thinner brush for your fine detail - eyes, nose, mouth, knees, etc.

Also, don't use the bucket tool.

If you want to learn a specific style, then study from artists who are good at it. In case of anime, marketing illustrations tend to be a much better source to study from than the actual anime itself, because animators obviously have to but far less time and effort into a single drawing than an illustrator would.

I wouldn't bother studying a particular style before you have a basic idea of the real fundamental concept behind it though. In this case, head anatomy. You should have at the very least a good enough understanding of the fundamentals to be able to see when an image has messed up proportions that are not due to the style, but mistakes of the artist, like in your reference.

>> No.1765069

There is a whole lot more than just simplified bone structures, and anatomical studies as a matter of fact it seems you are missing the most critical part and that is Gesture, look up Vilpuu's systematic approach to figure drawing.

Proportions
Perspective

>see when an image has messed up proportions

This I would actually like some clarification on because I thought the proportions were pretty decent.

- Head is oval
- Eyes start 1/2 of way through the head
- Nose goes from eye line to 1/2 of the way to the chin
- Ears start at eye line and end at mouth line
- Eyes are about the same size
- Eyes are about 1 eye-length apart (at least on the left girl)

Isn't this how human face anatomy should be or have I completely fucked up my understanding of drawing faces? Not saying that you guys are wrong, saying that this was my understanding of faces and if that's wrong I need to do some relearning.

Your proportions are a little off on the face.

They are WAY off on the torso; unfortunately my MS Paint skills are limited so I can't really redline that area.

In general, the head you drew is for a much larger torso than what she has. The shoulders are also unrealistically angular (they should be rounder). There is also meat on the human body between the neck and shoulder that you have omitted from this poor girl, which consequentially makes how you attached the neck to the torso look strange. Copy this pose in a mirror and you will see what I'm talking about.

Also, is she shrugging AND throwing her shoulders back? That's a very uncomfortable position (try doing it). It'd look much more natural if you lowered her shoulders to a resting position.

>What's happening on the second one? trying to steal food? Did they steal the food and eat him on the first one?
The second one is actually some customer finding out they're eating fake meat. While eating, medieval police came arrested the chef and the other police took out the evidence from the food stock (barrel) which is the monster meat that's use to cook the customer's food which that they already started eaten (bitten food).

The second one has no correlation with the first one though both ideas actually stems from an initial idea which I have problem conveying also.

>I'd say first one but maybe more emphasis on the kids
I will, this are roughs just to show the ideas across, haven't played with thumbnail and angles yet.

Thanks for the input.

If anyone has idea how to make the second one have more clarity then it would be cool, otherwise I'll probably just use it for a comic scene.

why don't you just look at a picture of Nagisa, you made him look so creepy because of how you defined the nose, and the mouth is just plain wrong. The ears are also not supposed to be that low, draw them so that the the top of the ear is level with the top of his eyes, maybe a bit higher because of the angle of his face. It also strikes me that his forearms are kind of beefy, but I think the issue is that your drawing would go beyond the limits of the canvas but since you've already gone to the limits you're squeezing his arms in to fit. Extend your canvas on the sides so you have more space to draw and then crop it down.

There's more to her figure messed up than her legs (see pic for notes), but basically your main problem is that you did not draw a skeleton (or if you did, then you drew it incorrectly).

Remember that when girls cross their legs, the knees will cross the center line of the body to the other side. Right now her left (our right) leg is not moved far enough over. The angle she is currently sitting at, you should actually be able to see BOTH thighs in the picture -- almost all of her right thigh, and a little bit of her left leg's inner thigh. You will also get a little bit of her crotch as well.

Regarding her right leg, while it is mostly turned to the side, there is still a little bit facing towards the viewer. Because of this, her foot would not be completely sideview like you drew in the pic, but rather angled slightly towards us. We should be able to see most of her toes.

Her foot is slightly too small, and her hand very much too large. Good rule of thumb:
>foot length = distance from wrist to inner elbow
>hand size (base of palm to fingertip) slightly smaller than face

I can't tell what angle her forearm is at, but if the inner forearm is facing the viewer then her hand cannot be attached to her arm as it currently is without breaking her wrist. If her forearm is turned so that its side is facing the viewer, then you need to redraw the forearm so it actually looks like we are looking at it from the side.

Fair enough. The artist did specifically request help on the legs because they were "so fucked up", but don't say I'm "tossing bullshit everywhere" when I'm not -- aside from "lacking depth" there were also problems in how the figure is positioned that caused the issue with the legs.

If you can't see these BASIC anatomy problems with the original pic, then you need to get back to your fundamentals. Have some goddamn redlines.

In my opionion, you look like you're sanitizing all the personality out of your lineart and coloring. you need to remember art doesn't always need to be polished 100% and in fact sometimes looks better unfinished or simplified. you also need to remember the intent of the image to prevent confusion. what is the primary function of this drawing? to tittilate? or to show a woman running? why are her arms akimbo? people don't ever look like this when they're running. you're clearly capable of drawing, but you should move away from the techniques of popular overworked overworked-anime-painters on deviantart as they have become incredibly stale by now. what's the difference between this and a piece by genzoman other than the fact genzo drew one slightly better? there need to be MORE differences. Watch movies. Read books. News. Pick particular elements you like. Type of historical character, fashion, story, study from there, have fun with what you learn, create new stories. Or the reverse way, just try to create new characters form imagination, ask yourself why they're boring, invent story and background, do research.
Stop this autopilot, I can't believe you're always drawing the same character, it's not sane.
