Does anyone know how to restart your wacom driver so you don't have to restart your computer when it fails? It's fun to paint without any size jitter and opacity (pic related). But it'd be preferable to be able to turn it on and off in some way, since there are things that I find look better without the jitters enabled. Just thought it could be interesting to play around with as a whole workflow (Block-in in pure values turn on jitter and start mixin').

>>1758663
Is it just a man exploring a cave, the right one suggests he has a specific goal in mind. Buut are you really playing around with it enough?

Have you tried placing the light at the top of the screen, like he was headed to the surface? What happens if he's facing away from us and when he is in the foreground, what about middleground?
What happens if we reverse it and he's going away from the light into the cave? He'd have a lightsource with him in any case wouldn't he? Or can he see in the dark?

What if the light is on the bottom? (warning recquires 3 point perspective)

I find both of them to have a weird split in the middle. The left one being worse since it looks like he's standing next to a pillar, where's the sense of space between him and whatever it is that's glowing?

Some thoughts. Also you don't have to use black as your darkest value when you're planning out value thumbs, try something 80% black and then use pure black for dark accents. It's more real that way.

>>1758674
Boat + monster has been done a lot, try looking at what others have done with the idea. "Sea monster" comes up with some cool results.

It's hard to make out what it is though-- try to work in a lighter value space (more towards mid tone, actually just paint in mid tones and keep your lights and darks seperated cleanly)

Have you ever done a 3 tonal study? It's where you have Lights one value, darks another (darker ofcourse) And a third for the background. The idea is to (cont)

have a very acurate light map, that is solved in midtone. You can then change the bg around to to something that aids the whole. (If your BG is the same value as the darks, what happens - what if it's the lights?) Digital makes it much easier to experiment with this :)

>>1758699
Nice, but why are the eyes inconsistent with the rest? If you had painted the eyes in the same style of the rest of the image it would look much more "complete". The eyes feel cut in, not molded from the face.

>>1758774
It is very hard to transform blacks into color since black as a value neutralizes color. The masters who did b/w comp to full color usually didn't work with blacks, or if the did they never attempted to color it.

Try and be more acurate in your drawing. That doesn't mean a line drawing, just more acurate placement of shapes and relative values. Remember if something looks off in a painting it's 80% of the time the drawing that's off.
15% the values and 4% the colors, the rest is mystery and never comes up anyway.

>>1758887
cool thanks.

If it's a ball of light you'd have an easier time showing it if it interacted with the environment. Right now the chasm that it's lighting up is so isolated it looks like a door. You could just take a soft brush and lightly indicate it's an orb for starters.

Try and have it behind things partially. You could arrange the stalacites so that it's obvious it's a light source. Many ways to handle it.

Here's a study process by Thorsten. Look at how at the second step the image is basically done. He could have stopped there and it would have worked.

I suggest doing a few studies like this, keep the three values on a seperate layer so you can't mix them at all. Then you can use the different layer tools in photoshop to see what happens when:

You bring the values closer
You bring the values further apart.
You join the BG with the light or the dark

A thing to note though, extreme lightning situations like pure black darks // pure white lights often recquires jaggy shapes to balance themselves out.

Just do a bunch of these studies (to the second step no further!). You can use studies you've already done the lines for. This is a great way to learn and see for yourself how lights and darks work.

>>1758896
Google cave exploration.

Always look at life if you're in doubt, and since you don't have any caves nearby (presumed by the way you actually drew a cave) just go and look at images. Look, don't draw but look carefully.

What shapes are prominent in different caves - some are created by water trickling through, they have very smooth shapes (if they don't have stalactites(spelling?)). Some are made by lava, very rough texture.

Draw from imagination. Like you're dreaming onto the page. When you're stuck go fetch the rules (the studies, the perspective grids, the specific refference) untill you're no longer stuck, then go back and dream onto the paper.

You can never know enough about yours subjects.

Believe me, I'm sitting on top of a shit ton of thumbs and refs.

Anyways, while there's certainly a good chunk of cave refs I've found, the problem with most of them usually boiled down to them being shot in very bland, boring caves, or very open areas with nothing really around. Not a whole lot of different angular steeps or such, at least not that I've found.

That said, I'm more so focused on how to arrange the composition in the larger scheme of things. How to have the eye move around in a specific way whilst maintaining the cave appearance.

I don't do photo studies, but it's the approach I use when I'm looking at life. Simply doing the seperation a few times allows you to look at just about anything and then easily seeing the patterns. Squinting is hella usefull to find 'the big look'

Simply matching your study to the refference 1:1 you're loosing out on a lot of struggle (oppertunity to learn) I had a period where I painted ontop of photographs to see what details could be removed without harming the expression presented in the photo.

For studies a thing to try; have a stopwatch set it to 1-2 minutes and then whenever you do a stroke, you restart the stopwatch. Wait till it rings then make your next one. This gives you a bigger opportunity to actually look at the subject. And think about what you're really seeing.

When you're done you can do a quick painting from memory /different angle.

Too many do studies without really looking.

"There is a difference in working "at" something and working "for" something you are working for better knowledge, the goal with any study is then to be set in stone before you being or it will grant less than it could"

Quote from loomis.

>and have her face creepily screaming?

that's what you get when you type in banshee in google(pic related, they all look like this).
i think the story i read on wikipedia is more interesting.

the german wikipedia has a better section on banshee than the english wiki (imo):

tl;dr a banshee isnt always something frightening or screaming. the article describes her as a white woman, usually old, who sits infront of a window of a family and weeps. in some stories her scream can kill everyone who hears it, in other stories she is described as more gentle that helps people to get to the netherworld

I would suggest toning down the "lens correction" frayed color edges just a bit, though. Your work would look better without it. Either that, or I would suggest a tad more sharpening to the completed project.

Hmm, aside from that, I think the sternum could use a bit more value, as well as the shirt wrinkles. That area of the torso is looking a bit flat compared to the rest of the drawing.

I did defined it with a tad stronger values than this one, but I pulled back since I feel that it was too distracting, and the detail might clash with her face. Even the wrinkles on the current one, I feel is slightly too much. In terms of visual flow, I don't want the viewer to linger on her torso too long, and instead look straight to her face... if that made sense.

>lens correction
>gun's reflection
It was a quick fix job since I'm outside and I don't have my tablet with me, so I'm unable to smoothen things out properly. All mouse. Probably would fix it later. Thanks for the feedback!

contrast and value rank at the top of the compositional hierarchy. the placement of objects and diagonals they form, rank at the very bottom.

now look at the little castle in the background, and notive how its almost in complete white. yet its surrounded by ultradark tree branches, with pretty sharp edges. HUGE contrast. HUGE eyecatching effect. nobody even looks at your creature.

this image has alot of potential i think you should put some time into working out the values. to give you an idea, open the image in photoshop and hit ctrl+L to open the levels curve. you'll notice an overuse of extreme darks and extreme lights. a general guideline for beginners is to aim for a value curve that peaks at the middle, and then gently flattens out in MINIMAL/ZERO use of full white/black.

Your values are already wrong from thumbnail view.
Paint with tablet pressure on, and it's better if you practice to get the correct value without the eyedropper.

Also, your reference is not a good one to study from. It's way too flat, due to lack of highlights and shadows.
Attached is a better lighted subject. Snap your own photos if you can't find something you like online.

I get what you're trying to achieve. IMO, Aladdin one works well because of it's scale. The huge rocks and stairs leading up to the lamp creates a grand atmosphere. It suggests something important and mystical that is larger than him.

>nobody even looks at your creature.
Well personally I looked at the creature, but only after looking at the knight and wondering what he's fighting. And I didn't notice the castle during the few seconds I looked, I just saw the trees with some background, I guess the eye is lost in the massive alternating white/black contrast the trees make, and since there's nothing interesting in the top left I didn't check the similar top right. I agree that there's something wrong about such composition of contrast and colors, for a concept of knight vs beast, they shouldn't be lost in an uninteresting surrounding.

Here's a nice pic I found on Google 'beast vs knight', he chose to have a blurry/unshapely environment for the encounter, with very neutral colors, and saturated red/blue for the two important elements: beast and knight, so they're the immediate focus, and we notice directly the careful, beautiful details on them for a nice 1st impression of the piece, even though the rest is less remarkable when looking for details. Also, the vegetation&sword flow to&around the beast, so the eye is lead to it even more. I'm an amateur but I think that's a nice approach to the composition of a beast vs knight concept, and it could help improving it.

Good energy though, as a gesture your original sketch would have been good.

first as others say look into something that isn't paper, oil will rot that, not the hugest deal if you don't care about your work outliving you though. But more importantly as someone who paints on a variety of things paper feels like shit.

Canvas panels are cheap. But I highly recommend going the stretched canvas route, the little bit of bounce it has is something you will get from nothing else. You don't have to make your own, but lets put it this way, I wish I had the means to, pre-stretched doesn't feel the same as starting something almost from scratch does.

It might also do you well to look into gesso, some fine grit sandpaper, and a cheaper brush to apply it. It will allow you to control the texture of the surface your working on, and make a lower quality canvas a little better. The more times you apply it and sand it down the smoother surface you get (which is mostly nice for keeping your brushes from degrading, and realism).
But the biggest benefit is that if you don't like how something came out, you can sand it a little, re-gesso the canvas, and start fresh. Just be careful not to sand the canvas itself.

I can see a lot of deviations from the ref occurring - ones that seem common to a lot of your work. I don't know how intentional they may be, but just make sure they are conscious decisions with a clear purpose each and every time.

Notable examples of this is your overstating the eyes (and making them larger), shrinking the nose, and softening edge transitions that don't need to be softened.

You've also drawn the face looking forward instead of upward, which I do believe to be a clear mistake. The jaw is understated, the cranium is overstated. Don't forget to envision the box containing the head, and decipher the orientation of that box in 3D space. I'd also suggest a less stringy approach to the hair (the bangs aren't bad, but the ends are unappealing and distracting). Think about the contrast in your brush size and sharpness, and the effect that has on the overall painting. Your hair is distracting instead of complimenting the piece as a whole.

Remember, for everything you change, have a clear reason to do so. For everything that you don't change, have a clear reason for doing so.

Some of the shadows on your study aren't the same as on your reference. For instance, you've drawn an area of darker value down the right side of the bottom of his tunic which isn't on the reference and you've missed a really large, bright area of reflection on the back of the shield.

A deceptively tricky choice for a study as there are multiple light sources.

Your brushwork isn't bad for someone just starting out with the medium. But things that stand out on the piece is the color, or lack thee of.

Your pallet seems entirely earthen, and while that may be a deliberate choice, the more subtle coloration within skin tones might help better define the face and neck.

The neck should show more of the reflected light of the shirt, his cheeks and nose lack the red that the large amount of blood in that region provides (though don't aim for tumbler levels of that) a more subdued world work, crimson in the nostrils and ear, maybe more pronounced sienna in the entire area if you wanted to say in pallet.

Most men especially those with facial hair have a more pronounced grey tone around their chin, and beard, less saturation in this area helps define the lower portion of the face.

You seem to be on the right track when it comes to shadows, but don't be afraid to experiment with the colors that lie within them, your nose has the best shadows on the man's right. Though the tip of his nose seems to be too far to this side.

Keep it up man, seeing more traditional stuff in these threads is a nice change of pace.

I feel the same about Loomis. I mean, hes not shit, but I don't think hes methods of teaching are as good as the techniques he teaches. I prefer, for example, the Proko videos. He is a better teacher, the techniques are almost the same and you can see someone doin it in video, which is way better than figuring out the process looking at pictures.

yeah proko has some good videos too. very simple, very to the point.

i think that loomis lacks empathie. he lacks the ability to see his tutorials through the eyes of the people who are trying to learn from it. a lot of what he says and does makes sense to him but not for other people. he has the "draw a circle, then draw the whole owl" problem. he often leaves out essential steps of the process and never goes into details of something. he just expects you to somehow figure everything out yourself

ic really really reallllly needs to learn how to critique. If you say shit like that follow it up with something actually constructive.

Unless you are the artist of that. In which case, never talk bad about your own art. Let the viewer decide what they don't like.

Could anyone truncate the list down a bit to the absolute beginner essentials for learning to draw realistically?
I'd guess Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain.
But is there a more modern equivalent?
